I was at the local Chevrolet Dealer and there was a ZR1 Vette in the showroom and next to it was a convertible ZL1 Camaro (with a automatic) next to it. Looking at the price tags I found something interesting.

Gas Guzzler Tax - ZR1 Corvette - $1,000 (total cost $128,000)
Gas Guzzler Tax - ZL1 Camaro - $2,500 (total cost $65,000)

WHAT!! The Corvette has more horsepower, but it has a bigger gas guzzler tax.

So is it the mileage that determines the tax on the vehicle? Or is it the fact that there will be more Camaros that get the tax and that bumps it up. I'm thinking that the mileage does it as the Vette had better mileage then the Camaro.

I know, forget the new car, get the LSA or LS9, throw it in a classic with an updated chassis, get a wicked tune on the engine and T56 Magnum and save tens-of-thousands of dollars.

Maybe I'm just trying to make sense out of the politics of tax policy to manipulate our buying habits. It is election season....

I guess the good news is the ZL-1 is getting over 17 mpg avg. :D

@Steve - For a government to give it must first take.

So what happens to that money? My guess is it pays the salaries of the people who monitor the program and peripheral expenses and that's about it.
