Thought I'd start a standalone thread for this chassis project - some may have seen it in our projects thread.
With the huge popularity of these big body '60's cars, it would seem a natural evolution is to go from just making them look cool, to making them seriously move...this one definitely falls in the latter category.
The car arrived as a pretty stock looking Biscayne in fairly nice shape:

The blue '67 is still on the backburner. Being a shop project, it's tough to cram it in among the 20-odd other customer cars! If we get back on it, I'll get some pics up.

Very cool build. What about paint? Are the plans to keep it simple maybe even leave the current paint alone? To me, the color works with the car and would look good.

Looks awesome!
I was curious what you were going to do with the rear floor, I did the same on my Brougham. Not much else you can do since that rear floor drops clear down to the the bottom of the rockers.
With the IRS and wheels/tires that big can you just unbolt the shock and swaybar to drop the spindle down enough to get the wheel on?

It is tricky on the cars with the low rear wheel openings. We will probably experiment with the wheel backspace to find the right balance of access/looks to get some clearance.
...or have the body hinge like a funny car...
The Broughham is looking great BTW!

I know! We were looking around at other 60's and there are really not many that are much more than bagged with bigger rims. I think they are really good looking cars that with some tightening up and some enhancements of the details, could make for a seriously cool ride.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8332/8117333798_8c72bd2394_b.jpg
The overall plan for the build is really an enhancement and tightening up of the original GM lines.
With the car coming from an era that many feel is really the heyday of GM styling, we thought it right to really let the lines speak for themselves.
We are still experimenting with a few colors, but them main vibe would be heading toward a more elegant color scheme, graphite gray or similar to the VW 'United Gray' with perhaps brushed nickel trim.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8053/8117252374_e2c20c3669_b.jpg
Some of the 'tweaks' would include moving the door handle mechanism to become part of the trim running down the side of the vehicle and tightening up the bumpers to the body, removing the seams on both and potentially re-working the side quarter emblem in a new style and flush with the body.
We always felt the two taillights on the Biscayne (unlike the three on the Impala) looked a little like an afterthought - the spacing always just looked 'wrong'. One concept would be re-positioning them and adding some more detail to the tailpanel. We also wanted to try a more bold concept with a wider single taillight lens on each side occupying the space on the tail panel, filling out the large blank space and leaning more towards the 'jet age' styling of the rest of the car.

With the tank under the hood complete, we can move onto the bumpers.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8197/8192153242_4c868ed667_b.jpg
With no radical body mods planned, much of the focus will be on the fit finish and refinement of the existing features. For example, removing the seams from the 3 piece bumper and blending it into one piece.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8484/8192155048_10f94667b1_b.jpg
Tucking these bumpers closer to the body to look 'correct' requires a couple extra steps due to the side profile shape of the bumper against the body. The existing area on the fender is removed near the top edge of the bumper and we made a new piece to add a feature line to 'cheat' the body out to meet the bumper.

Time for a bit of an update...After completing the bumpers, we were at a point where we could begin to head toward some of the other custom elements on the car. After much discussion, the owner came to a decision that he was set on keeping the original paint and overall integrity of the exterior as you see it. Many of the touches we were planning as the next step (door handles, trim mods etc) in the build would have to take a back seat in order to do this. Thankfully we were at a point where we could begin to head toward completion 'as-is'.
(Plus with an LS9, IRS Biscayne dangling infront of him, we can imagine he was dying to just drive it! :D )

Some minor assembly, tuning and trim remaining before it goes off to upholstery.

That Suburban is one we built a couple of years ago. It gets driven all the time (Power tour, etc) We see it for service back at the shop, usually with the front covered in bugs, chips and tire rubber stuck to the lower edge of the rear quarters!

Question, I am in Australia and have a 61 Buick, I have plans...too many to fund right now, but I will be soon. I'm interested in the chassis you built for this, did you save a jig and could you rebuild another ? I was going to build my own, but this might save some time and $$

Thanks everyone! We appreciate the compliments!
This car definitely turns heads wherever it goes. You could park this car next to a new Lambo and it would probably have a bigger crowd around it. A testament to the fantastic styling of the '60 body and the subtle tweaks we did, combined with the new ride height/stance of the FAST TRACK chassis and Forgeline wheels.

Thanks! - This chassis is one of our production FAST TRACK chassis for this GM body ('58-'64 - http://roadstershop.com/chassis/58-64-impala-chassis/), so we can definitely get one together for you. Just get in touch when you are ready and we can go over everything with you.
