My wife said we can start on a 2nd pro-touring car :)

My first pro-touring project is under way and almost finished - the '70 Charger called Punishment. http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=35291&highlight=punishment

The first requirement for the new project is that it has to be convertible. I don't personally like convertible cars that much, I think the lines get all messed up when you get them in the convertible style. But that's what she wants :)

The second is that it is somewhat sporty. I don't think we want a big Chevy or Cuda that just gets turned into a convertible, I think we want a sportier car. Maybe a Vette but she doesn't dig those too much. Or maybe a Porsche 356 but I feel like those are a little too popular. We don't want a kit car. We want an old car that we can bring into the modern age.

I was thinking we might even get the motor and such from a Tesla and make the whole project electric.

Anyway, any suggestions for the perfect sporty, convertible that can be made pro-touring? Your help is appreciated!

Small or mid-sized is probably better, I agree. Keep the ideas coming!

How about a T-bird or a '50s 190SL? Those would be towards the top of my list for convertibles, no body ever modifies those, and it would be so cool to have a classy cruiser with some new suspension under it!

I'm kidding of course --- I'd also bought her a 1970 MBZ 280SL --- it's a horrible little car -- but cute! Would make a killer car with some suspension and some power!

This one is so far from stock, not sure there is an original piece left on it. Very bad ass open check book build.

That car was sensational in build quality.... but it was such a "sleeper" that it didn't garner the excitement it should have IMHO.

In the vid below Derek refers to taking a '64-'81 SOHC 6.3 out of one these.

I would recommend a C3 Corvette. The detachable hardtop has as good or better lines than the coupe itself. 68-72 Chrome Bumper project cars can be had for less than $10k, with post 72 rubber bumper cars cheaper than that. You will find that building a pro-touring vette does not cost what most people think.
