View Full Version : Selecting camshaft

Hi guys, long time without writing.

My question right now is about my camshaft selection. First of all, I’ll give you some of the most important specs of my small block Chevy 350:

Overbored to 4.040”
Forged pistons and rods
Nitrurated Crankshaft
ProComp 58cc (210cc intake runner) aluminum heads (I´ve been reading they suck, hope you can give me some feedback too)
Weiand Team G 7530 (2800-7200)
Holley 4150, 750cfm
T5 World Class 5 speed transmission
3.73 rear gears, Hoosiers 295/50/15

This is mounted on my Chevrolet Vega GT 72.

Now I’ve got the engine dissambled because I have to pressure check the block; it has a lot of temperature problems (seems like compression goes into the water), so I want to take the opportunity of making a camshaft upgrade. I’m looking forward something in the range of 3000-7000 more or less. I like to use mechanical flat tappet cams, so I would like to know what do you recommend for my street/drag application.

Best regards and I’ll be very appreciate if you can help me.

Adiós muchachos, Cristián from Chile!!

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the Pro Comp heads are Chinese. Did you already have your intake mounted on it? Heard you have to use the Pro Comp intake for proper fit but maybe you can clarify.
Also at 58cc combustion chamber can you give details on pistons? I imagine they are dish due to the small combustion chamber size.
I would recommend a different head with 64cc combustion chamber and forged flat tops. The Sportsman 2's are a good economy head.
I've always used Comp solid flat tappets in the past and have had good experiences with them from the 273 extreme to the 292s.
Are you running power brakes? If so the 280s magnum would suit you well. I believe they are 248 at .050 duration, .510 lift and 110 lobe centers. I used 1.6 ratio rocker arms and was able to squeeze between 400 and 420 hp from my 350 using a victor junior and Holley 650 dp.
