View Full Version : AC duct placement?

With all the gauges in my car I only have the two outter most ducts for the VA Gen IV AC in the dash... and now that I live in Florida I'm thinking I "need" to add a couple more somewhere...
So here's the question, do I remove two gauges from the dash and put a couple of Vintage Air's bullet vents in the stock location to the right side of the dash?
Dash contains (L to R) Tach, Fuel Level, Speedo, water temp, oil pressure, volts & fuel pressure.

OR put them where the map pocket normally resides in the console and remove the two outter gauges there?
I currently have 3 guages there. Trans Temp, Oil Temp, D-PIC. I also have an analog clock NIB. LOL (Trying to keep up with Bad Penny at the time I guess... he who has the most gauges wins?)

OR add two VA vents under the dash somewhere? Stock AC cars also had vents built-in under the steering column and under the glovebox fwiw.
OR leave it alone and just hope that the outter two vents in the dash cool the car down here in Hot-lando?
Please let me know your thoughts family... :lateral:

It depends on how many outlets your particular Vintage Air unit has... if it only has two -- then it wouldn't add any cooling to add more outlets in the dash. Do you know what model was installed?

Gen IV... I believe it has 6 outlets.
Thinking I may just add a couple of bullet vents to either side of the console on the outside of the map pocket area slightly under the dash... ?

Took some crappy cell phone pictures last night...

Thinking I may just remove the Trans Temp and Oil Temp gauges from the map pocket area and just run the D-PIC or clock in the middle with two bullet style AC vents on either side...

Okay Mike! Who makes it and where do I get it? LOL
Are the under console and glovebox door vents operational in this car?

Does your Firebird dash plastic piece set that is in the lower area have the AC vents already (like in the picture above, under the steering wheel)? I can't tell from your pictures, but I'm guessing no? Adding those would give you a second pair of vents at least, and lower instead of just the uppers which you have now.
I agree that having some air flow in the middle of the car would be helpful too though.

No. But they should be easy enough to get... not sure about finding the duct work for behind them though. I'm trying to source the ducts for the left and right vents already as they are MIA.
The Gen IV VA AC has 6 ports for AC. Just trying to utilize as many as possible since I live in Florida now.

I bought a set of those lower dash pieces from eBay a couple of years ago for not too much money. You can dye them easily if you don't find your preferred color.
I don't remember exactly what the shape of the back of those vents is, whether it's rectangular like the little vent, or transitions to a square, but you should be able to connect the VIA flexible duct to it without a lot of trouble. I used some stretchy-rubbery tape (not duct tape exactly, but something similar) on my second gen that I built before. It will all be hidden, so looks aren't critical here. :) You can see a rough picture here:

I do recall wrapping after reading that again that I wrapped the outside with duct tape to keep eveything from coming undone. Maybe that will help. These weren't round to rectangular connections, but the idea is similar.
Good luck! Living in Texas, I understand the need...

The under dash and glove box vents are not operational. It is a custom built piece and i started with a 69 Camaro center dash vent. I find it interesting no one has asked us yet if it came from the factory like that.
There is not 6 vents, there is 4 dash vents and 2 defroster vents

Very cool Mike! With 4 dash vents I think it will be easier to go with my two bullet vents in the map pocket idea with the D-PIC or clock in the middle.
