http://i1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee508/AL7319/TheT-5RMartini_Mustang.jpg
The T-5R Martini Mustang
In the 60’s, the willingness of manufactures like Ford to continue pushing boundaries in the arena of motorsports to develop winning combinations was common.
Our proposal is that a couple of Ford exec’s had a chance business meeting with the owners of Martini Racing. This meeting could have taken place during a European F1 or Rally race perhaps. During the conversation, Ford expressed an interest in racing the Mustang in Europe more since the Mustang’s 1-2 finish at the 1964 Tour de France and also doing some “over the road endurance testing” with their Indy 4 cam motor. A deal was made that Ford would send Martini Racing a body/chassis -less drivetrain, and a 4 cam motor.
Now for those of you who know early Mustangs, the export model of the Mustang was called the T-5. But since Ford would be sending basically a race prepped Shelby R model, we figured it would be know as the T-5R.
Martini would then use their knowledge and experience to prepare the car for road rally racing. Martini would provide Ford with vital feedback as to how the car and drivetrain faired. Plus, joining forces with successful, high profile teams such as Martini Racing could prove beneficial in two ways. 1. The obvious, winning teams know how to win! And 2. That a high profile team would bring wide spread promotion for the Ford Racing in Europe.
We have taken the Lotus approach to building this car which is “to add speed, add lightness”. So the car features weight savings everywhere possible. But, we have used parts and materials from our 60’s time period. Example- fiberglass instead of carbon fiber.
A light car means it can use a small light engine to do the job and be able to overcome the affects of inertia and gravity better that a heavy car. The 300 lbs. engine is all aluminum with magnesium covers and oil pan. The CR Racing transmission weighs in at only 63 lbs. All side and rear glass have been exchanged with plexiglass and the window regulators and wing window frames have been removed. All body panels including bumpers, except the body shell and doors have been replaced with fiberglass.
The interior is Spartan and set up for rally racing, complete with dash mounted timers, toggle and kill switches and a navigator’s foot pedestal.
Under the car is where we hide the modern technology. Gone is the old factory suspension, and in its place is the brand new complete suspension from Detroit Speed. This is coupled with Wilwood brakes and one-off rims from Evod Industries that resembles the 4 spoke wheel on the 60’s Indy cars.

Cool story. I'd pay to watch a movie on how the T-5R rose to dominance in the the Euro Rally scene.

That particular picture looks very nice, but after viewing the whole build sequence I see some angles I'm not sure about- especially the roof chop, not really sure that is working. I'm not sure I've ever seen a fastback style chop that I like. The widening looks nice, and it seems like they might have done some other pushing and pulling and pinching up front that I can't quite figure out. I do like the flares and the fact that they actually got the body down on the ground. Still can't believe there is room for a mid-engine drivetrain without shoving the driver into the windshield.

The mid-engined Mustang looks incredible! However I'm not sure on the wheels - I guess I'll have to hold judgement until the car is done.
Actually I think the wheels really round out the look of a modern vehicle. They do look like they came off of a Ferrari but I definately think it works with the new lines
Al... have you guys scaled the car? I'm curious how the weight balances out?

I think the wheels are hot ! They are a modern billlet interpretation of the original '69 Mach 1 wheels. Maybe you are thinking the 5 spokes shown on the mock up are the final wheels ?

Back to this awesome Mustang Mach 40 or whatever its called I have a customization question.
When you open the door, there is kind of critical clearance as it swings inside the front fender. I think this is especially pronounced on a car that has a distinct character line in the door like the Mustangs.
It might seem like a dumb question (and can probably only b answered by experimentation) but when you widen the doors like that, do you guys think that the hinges would need to be offset the same 2" off the body as well, to maintain the normal arc of the door ?
I've studied every picture on Eckert's site and none show the modified door without the front fender on, so I can't tell if they had to move the hinge.
They didn't answer my email but I don't blame them I wouldn't waste my time giving away secrets to fanboi emails either !

Preston, I do not think you have to modify the hinges as long as the fender is moded accordingly. Not that I have done this myself but I have a buddy that used to do a lot of ricers and did ths all the time and I know for a fact that he didn't change anything to the hinges or to the pillar. The inside of te fender area has to be moded for sure but maybe Roger will chime in as he HAS done this before!

#1 -- You can't just go and buy a ticket to get in... You must be a part of the industry - have a company that is in the industry or somehow be connected.
#2 -- There is no auto crossing on SEMA grounds -- there are some drifting demonstrations done by pros such as Ken Block
#3 -- You have to buy a ticket to the OUSCI... Go to Optima Battery website and pay to get one. Then you have to get to and from the track in Pahrump (40 some miles or so from Las Vegas). Anyone that has paid for a ticket (limited!) can go to OUSCI.

For those of you who love the Ford GT40 Mustang as I do you might like to know they have semi-assembled/painted pictures up now near the bottom of this massive photo page
http://www.eckertsrodandcustom.com/projects_mustang.php
Looking good. I usually like simple single tone paint jobs and I usually like silver as well, but after admiring their work I actually hope they put a rocker stripe or some accenting on it - definitely reserving final judgement as the bumper is not even mounted we'll wait until its done. Well, okay, my final judgement is pretty likely to be "TOTALLY AWESOME" regardless. REally looking forward to seeing the interior as well which hasn't been shown anywhere near finished state yet.
BTW, I might be the only person on this thread to care, but I cut one of my extra doors in half ('67 Mustang) and widened it 2" and mounted it to the normal hinges, and it didn't seem to have any problem with interference between the front edge and the trailing edge of the fender when being opened, so I guess the guy who posted an answer for me is right, it doesn't make too much of a difference.

Hey Preston, thanks for posting. I'm sure in person, that things is going to be mind blowing. Sometime is hard to capture the essence of the car in pictures.
Good example ids G-Force Cuda. When I see it in pictures, it almost looks to me like an early 70's funny car the way the body rakes. But when I see it in person, all I can saw is, WOW! That thing is beautiful.
Anyways, can't wait to see it in person.

Come to think of it, I could have told you that. Dang  I added an inch and some change to the front of my '65 Mustang's doors, and didn't have to move the hinges. I will say, it does get trickier the more exaggerated a body line is as it runs across the door. If the angles are sharp, things might want to hit, or if add so much metal that it would hit the inner structure of the fender, then you would run into problems.
Now, back to the GT40 Mustang! I even dig the wheels. I think they capture "contemporary-retro" look, i.e. when I see them I don't just think of the original design blown up to 18."

How did I miss this? I spent a couple hours going through all the build images. Absolutely amazing fabrication work! WOW!
Love the car, a little soft on the wheels. Maybe same style with a smaller hub would work. It's difficult to go with the Halibrand style wheels, without coming off as too much of a ford GT GT40 look.
Not an easy decision, but it looks &*))%$* amazing! Congratulations!

As usual- we finished the car at 6:00 AM Friday morning and left at noon driving all night to be here by Saturday morning. The car is cleaned and ready for Tuesday. By the way there are ALOT of new projects here to see!! lots of cool stuff and probably the best SEMA I've been to.

Our SEMA adventure began last Thursday at K&N facilities in Riverside to do a video segment to be aired during OUSCI on Speed. Saturday we did a magazine shoot at sunrise in the mountains just outside Riverside. ( very cool lighting conditions!) finally we moved into the K&N booth today. So if your at SEMA, come by the K&N booth and say hello!

Nick is stuck hiding in his basement (scheduled to fly out tomorrow morning then switch to early this morning only to have all flights cancelled yesterday) but I'll swing by and pretend to do his job for him. Plus, I have to see this car in person. Tim and I had dinner the other night and he wouldn't stop talking about it.

Who built the Fairlane ? I find I am liking the trend lately of complete customization reined in by keeping as many vintage cues as possible and not over stylizing the car.
Much like the Eckerdt's Mustang GT - was that a Sema build ? If so let a 1000 photographs flourish.

I can appreciate all the work in that rear engine mustang!
But come on guys there are at least 6 cars on this thread nicer than it!
Those body lines and proportions are sooooooooo far out of place on this car.
The top of the windsheild roof area is at least 5"s higher than the rest of the roof you would have thought with that much fabrication they would have spent some time at the designing desk aswell. IMO
That Fairlane is off the hook nice!

Thanks Al for the great photos.
Believe it or not, I don't really like early Camaros that much (am I allowed on this site ?) but that black one is very very nice. Who built that ? I think its the one we saw in metal last year and it blew me away then.
Well we found one guy who doesn't like the the Mustang GT40.
But it looks pretty damn good to me. I'd like to see more of the interior but I can see the window was up.
In fact I was so inspired by that car I've already cut both my doors in half and one of them is just about welded up already.
If there is a Belvedere you like better than these cars, I am very eager to see it.
And we wont' complain if some pictures of the helpful booth personnel sneak in either.

By Far my favorite car of the show!!! It's neat to see the race car thyme in a world of Foosified cars. The attention to detail was noting short of amazing.

Im with you Al, That car is bad ass.
I heard they were building a street car but this is way beyond what I though. I wonder if Dale Jr cruising around in his Camaros had any infuence. You have any closer shots showing the front spindle area?
That shot with the mirror cracks me up....thats what them good ole boys get for leaving a nice shiney mirrow in Vegas.....razzor blade marks. LOL

Yeah those exhaust heat shields look pretty similar to the ones you can buy from Summit/Jegs or anywhere else. The nice touch is the way they are hooked on the pipes, the normal ones just have little hooks where you slide through a hose clamp which works fine but doesn't look quite as ncie or elegant as these.
I'm also curious about the hod heat shielding - is that a common Nascar heat blanket ? It looks like that lava stuff so its probably very expensive but if anyone has a link to something like that let me know.
Also, does anyone recognize the hood pins used on the Mach 40 ? I'd like to look into those as well ?
The mach 40 has encouraged me to solve my overly large fender flare problem i in a big way. The delivery man just dropped off an extra passenger door as mine ended up being too rusty - between my other spare door and the good quality driver door and the original pass door this will be the 4th '67 Mustang door I have cut in half in less than a week. I already have the drivers door welded up and it looks good. It is really amazing how little your eye notices the difference. Really looking forward to the change in look for my car.

Some of you might remember this cars as it was originally built by Boyd several years ago in a burgundy color. Chip updated the look and freshened it up. Hard to take good pictures as it's a long car in a crowed area.

I can't believe I don't have a full body shot of this one. I'm sure I do, I just need to sort through all the pics. In the meantime, here's what i have. This car took 15 years for the builder/owner to build. An original Shelby and Great 8 Ridler contender this year. The amount of work is overwhelming. Need to see the build pictures to really appreciate everything thats gone into it.

Beautiful car!! And just as cool was the fact that when I told the guys from Ekerts that I had been following the build on Lateral-G they proceeded to open up every door, hood, hatch, etc and talk through all the custom stuff they had done for the build! Very good group of guys!

I visited thier shop a few weeks before SEMA, this car was in the shop but I promised to keep my trap shut. Apparently is is one of the "Dollar" cars from Ford, and the intent is that these peices will be picked up by Ford for sale in the future. The car looked great in person. Producer was also in the shop, man pictures do not do that car justice.

I get home, look at my projects and get depressed lol :) Oh well, a lot of killer ideas I want to put into place on my rides now :)
Al I agree, the Impala, Mach40 and white Mustang among some killer Camaros were on the top of my list. The full aluminum Cobra with no welds (nothing new, but still amazing) also made my heart beat faster!
My pics do not compare to Al's, but here are some rides I also digged:
