View Full Version : quietest gears for Ford 9"
I'm buying a used built HD Currie 9" for my Chevelle project and it has 3.90 gears. I want to swap in 3.25 gears for my turbo project.
What manufacturer makes quiet gears? I don't want any whine.

Good luck with that one, it's a hit and miss with aftermarket gears.

........... seriously how much more quiet do you need LOL.
if you want quiet get them REM finished and run good fluid.
I've had a number of 8.8" rear ends built and only use Ford Motorsport gears as they are quiet. Richmond gears in the 3:90 ratio whined like crazy. I asked my differential guy about it and he said that is what particular brand in that ratio does. He has been working on transmissions and rear ends for 35 years.
So that being said.... what gears are you guys running in your 9" that don't whine. There are a dozen manufacturers and I don't want to make that mistake.

Call Randy's Ring and Pinion.... (google 'em) and they'll know more about this than the average guy on the street (which is what you're asking here). Or call and ask Currie -- or Strange.... They all have lots and lots of experience.

the surface finish has a lot to do with this hypoid gears rub faces the smoother you get the finish the less noise you will have.

I had the same concern. After doing some research I ended up buying some used oem Ford gears on ebay. (couldn't find NOS)
Still a risk but they looked perfect.

My center section is with a local rock crawler guy to get new gears installed now. I told him I want quiet qears and he is providing options next week.

Ford OEM are your best bet. You can usually find them on ebay or craigslist. I set-up a set of Motive's in my last center section and they are pretty quiet, but not quiet enough for me. I also hear Yukon makes good quiet gears as well.

Factory Ford gears are very quiet. I have a 3.00 ring & pinion you are welcome to have free if you want them, they are factory Ford, I bought a 9" 3rd member with a 31 spline traction loc posi and the gears are still in it, I don't plan on using them, if you want them I will tear it down. It was 1/2 price weekend at our local Pick N Pull wrecking yard, so I grab up extra rear ends then. I run the super tall 2.47 factory Ford gears in mine.

thanks Greg, very cool offer.
Thx for the offer. I'm going to see what size bearings I have as there are many variations of the 9" gears around.
Ordered some Superior 3.25 gears... they should be shipping out next week.
Goal is to have the 9" back in the Chevelle shortly thereafter.
I wonder how much punishment a 35 spline Detroit Locker 9" can take launching with a manual transmission and McLeod street twin disc clutch on slicks?
My goal is 800rwhp with this turbo on e85.... :D
