Wow! Carbon/carbon or cabon/ceramic? That's a lot of little doo-hickeys going on...care to share what it's from?

Red Bull RB8 - vented brake/wheel hub assembly

Red Bull have been forced to make changes to this wheel hub design - which we first featured at the Spanish Grand Prix - after suggestions the team were gaining an aerodynamic advantage from its clever design, by going against Article 3.15 of the technical regulations, which states that "any specific part of the car influencing its aerodynamic performance" has to be "rigidly secured to the entirely sprung part of the car" and must remain "immobile in relation to the sprung part of the car." In this drawing you can see the central hub has a series of small holes. Air is drawn through the brake duct and drum, passing the disc and caliper, and is then expelled through these holes which align with similar openings in the wheel rim. This reduces disruptive waste airflow inboard of the wheel and also reduces the transfer of heat between the rim and the tyre. But suggestions that the design was not purely for cooling, but rather could be used to energise airflow to the front wing, have led to Red Bull having to modify it in Montreal.
The F1 aerodynamisists continue pushing the envelope. :D
