I figured I would stop lurking and start a build thread.

The Background:

I bought this 1965 Mustang back in 1993 (if my failing memory serves me right). It was horribly beat up from a partial roll over accident years before. Thankfully it was cheap and my mother didn't kill me for tying up her garage. Over the course of a couple of years with my fathers help we restored the car and I drove it my senior year of high school and through the first couple years of college as my daily driver.

Towards the end of college I converted the car over to EFI using factory 5.0L Ford parts. This was back in the early days before plug and play harnesses and such. I started using "Injected65" as my online name in those days and it has stuck all these year later. I finished up college and moved to Kansas City where the car sat for some time due to a wiped cam lobe.

Fast forward a decade and I finally made the decision to restore the car again, but this time instead of a factory resto I decided to give it some late model suspension and definitely a kick in the horsepower pants. The goal for the car is to be able to drive on the power tour with my dad and have it be fast, fun and reliable.

Resto #2

I started off by deciding that I wanted to put a big block Ford engine into the car. That combined with my hatred for the stock worn out suspension led me to install a Rod & Custom front end.

http://www.candbmotorsports.com/gallery/d/1876-4/P1010007.JPG

Then I had the car blasted down to bare metal and had a guy that I used to work with put on new quarters and min tub the car.

After a falling out with the previous friend/body guy I now have the car back in my hands and am working with a good friend in KC to finish up the body work this fall. Right now I am working on finishing up the R&C front end and also working on a AJE 4-link rear suspension.

That's about it for now. I still need to download some pictures from my camera from this weeks work. I also have commissioned a rendering of the completed car, but I have not finalized the rendering details yet. As soon as I have some more details I will post them.

Thanks,
Chris

Here is a picture of the front mock up wheel. Its a 2012 Mustang GT wheel, 19X8.5 with a 245/45 tire. The tire is a bit taller than I plan on running, but it gives me a good idea what I will need for the new wheels.

I guess I should also list out some of the specs on the new build:

Engine:
521" BBF
Stock Block
Scat Crank
Eagle Rods
Probe pistons
Jon Kaase P-51 Heads
Jon Kaase spec'd solid roller cam
Single plane intake converted for EFI
Innovators West serpentine drive system

Transmission:
T-56 6 speed
Quicktime bellhousing

Suspension:
Rod & Custom Mustang II front suspension
AJE 4-link rear suspension
Narrowed 8.8" Ford rear end
Ford 31 spline Trac loc
Lightened and REM finished 4.10 gears

Here is a pic of the mock up motor mine is being built off of. I will use a stock steel block instead of the aluminum block, but otherwise it will be very similar.

Here is the rendering that I had done for the car. I hope to have the car on the ground and rolling again here in the next couple of weeks. Then I can take it outside and get some new roller pictures.

Keep up the good work. Rendering looks sweet.  I thought is was funny how you said "after falling out with the previous friend/body guy. " Hahahaha...sometimes friends and business do not mix well. Oh and you can throw family in that mix too. :_paranoid Sad, but true.

Yeah it was a bad deal. One of those no problem I will knock it out in a couple of months. Then I got the car back 17 months later, not finished, the work done was barely acceptable and now I need to spend even more money getting it to the point he promised it would come back to me. Live and learn I guess.

Looks like a handfull. That Jon Kaase Lima motor is going to produce plenty of hp and torque.:D

What are you shooting for in tire size out back?

Subframe connectors? I didn't see them on your list. :_paranoid

With that big block you will need at a minimum subframes connectors or it will twist the unibody like a wet noodle.

I have a set of Global West subframe connectors standing in the corner waiting to be installed. I'm also considering a basic 6 point roll bar since it will help stiffen up the car even more and the car should easily be quick enough to need one if I were to take it to the track.

The "buddy" that did the mini tub didn't notch the frame rail and take the tubs inward as far as I had requested so it looks like I will be limited to a 285-295 tire. I was originally wanting a 315 tire, but without having to go in and cut out everything I just paid to have done it doesn't look like that wide of a tire will fit. Once the rear end and suspension are mounted I am going to trim the quarter lips and remeasure though.

Thanks Buddy:mad:

I'd say at the level of power you will be at the unibody may need some additional help beyond the subframe connectors. A cage would be a good addition. What is your hp and torque target I would bet it isn't below 650:D

The guys at Kaase said it should make right around 700 hp on pump gas. The torque will probably be crazy I imagine. I don't have any plans to run sticky tires but it should still run pretty hard.

Seeing those hacked up wheel tubs really ate at me last night so I went ahead and ordered a set of wide wheel tubs from Grave Robber Sheetmetal. I will just do them myself this time. I should have done all the metal work myself in the beginning, but I tried to be lazy and help out a friend and it bit me in the arse. At least now I will have a nicer finished appearance and will be able to stuff the bigger 315 tires under the car

I started cutting out the old inner wheel wells last night. God I am glad to be rid of that hacked up crap. The garage was filled with haze so I didn't bother with any pictures. Tonight I will start making templates for the new tubs and start trimming things up to fit them.

I also started the assembly of the new rear end. Hopefully by the weekend I will have it together and in the car so I can start measuring for the rear wheels.

I have both of the Graverobber mini tubs welded in place. I still need to get the trunk hinge mounts welded and one of the package tray supports. The rear end is now completely assembled. I have a little machining to do to the brake caliper mounts to have the brakes complete, but that's minor really. My goal is to have the rear suspension installed and the car back on the ground by the end of the weekend. Then I will be in a position to install the mock up engine and trans so I can start fabbing the engine and trans mounts. I'm hoping that I can get the motor low enough to fit the stock hood and more importantly so I don't have to do any major trans tunnel surgery.

One other picture I guess. I put the intake up on the CNC machine at work and milled out the holes for the injector bungs. When one of the lathes opens up I am going to make the bungs and then my buddy in Wichita is going to put his tig skills to work and weld that puppy up.

Love the pulley system bracketry... very clean!

One thing of mention with your rear tire size... I deal a lot with a bunch of cars built with 17" wheels with 315s on the rear and they are getting hard to find in anything other than competition tires or drag radials. I am currently searching to find a full matching set of tires in a tread pattern that covers the front and rear tire size so definately go 18" or bigger- there are alot more options on tire sizes.

I finally got the rear end bolted under the car last night. I did some quick measuring and it looks like a 10" wheel will fit, but I need to get the shocks ordered and installed so I can get it exactly to ride height to check clearances. With the big brakes up front it looks like I will be using an 18" wheel at a minimum. I think in 18-19" tires the options for a 315 (or there abouts) width become more available.

Yep... 18" opens up a lot more options for tires and for brakes. But I'm not sure how a 315 would look on a 10" These cars I deal with have 315/35zR17 on 11" rim and it looks good.

I know the actual tire size varies with manufacturers as well, so it may end up with a bit smaller tire. I sold the 99 GT that had the 18X10 wheels with 285 tires so I need to either measure off of the 17" wheels I have or snag another set to measure off of. With the 4-link system I am running the lower control arm is going to be the tight spot. Maybe down the road I will look into moving the arm to the inside of the frame rail to maximize the new tubs, but for now I am leaving well enough alone :D

The engine is now mounted. I made a temporary mount to hold the transmission in place till I can get the materials to build a new trans crossmember. Once that is done I can sit the tunnel top back in place and see how much its going to need to be raised. I'm also relocating the factory shifter hole rearward to match the T-56 shifter position. Then hopefully I should be able to use a stock style shifter boot. I also ordered in new front floorpans to take care of the last of the rust (I hope).

Finally took a break from working on my powdercoating oven to work on the car a bit. The hood hinge bolts into the aprons with some crappy crimped nuts from the factory. I had a broken off bolt in one hole and the nut was ripped out on another hole. There were also several holes that needed to be filled. I took the leap and just started drilling out spot welds and replaced the whole panel. The only downside is the new panel didn't have the holes for the fender bolts nor did it have the VIN number so I cut that section out of the old panel and welded it into the new one. I still have a few plug welds to do at the bottom once the mock up engine is out of the way and some grinding before a skim coat of mud and it will be like new. Also hope to get the shock tower delete panels welded in soon too.

On another note I stumbled upon a deal on a 99 LS-1 Camaro T-56 trans. It was supposedly warrantied out in 2000 for "3rd gear takes too much effort to engage". It looks like new and was only $650 with a new hyd slave and master cylinders included. Now I can clean up and sell the LT1 T-56 that I have been using for mock up to cover most of that cost.

Injected65

I figured I would post an update. The LS1 T-56 I mentioned in the last post was picked up by a friend in KC who was near and he held it for me while I made time to go up and get it. Once I got up there I found out that the seller had lied and it was yet another LT1 T-56 :bang: At least this one is super clean and a 2.66 1st gear so I can convert it over.

I started in on replacing the front floor pans since they had some minor rust. While the pans were out I went in and coated the insides of the frame rails and extended up the trans tunnel brace to clear the T-56. The passenger side is in and this weekend I hope to get the drivers side welded in and start on fitting the old trans tunnel back in and patching in the gaps where it was raised.

I also found out recently that install I did on the AJE 4-link rear suspension will be covered in the June issue of Modified Mustangs. I'm hoping for a full article once the car is complete. :)

Edit: I also have pictures of the finished EFI conversion on the intake. I also got word this week that they are starting on the machine work on my block. God willing they will have the short block together before too long and I can start putting the long block together and sit it in the car to finalize the steering shaft placement and header design.

Don't you just hate it when you click on a thread and there are no updates??!! :bang:

Well the car took a long vacation in the corner of the shop. I was burned out on having to re-fix stuff that I paid to have fixed the first time. So here a few months ago I contacted a local body shop that had done some work for my buddy (as well as several other car guys). He had a 3 week opening where he could squeeze my car in and get some work done to it. Of course not everything went as planned. The new quarters I had paid the previous guy to install needed cut back off and yet another set of quarters installed. But they were able to get the interior of the car nearly finished as well as the back of the car up to the firewall and the engine compartment body worked. They ran out of time, I ran out of money and it is back home now.

Here are some pictures....

They filled in some holes in the trunk floor and mounted the trunk hinges to the mini tubs.

They hung the new passenger quarter. Much nicer panel and much cleaner install.

They finished patching in and welding up the raised tunnel for the T-56 and the new front pans.

The smoothed out the engine bay and put in some custom braces behind the panels for extra strength.

Starting on the engine bay body work.

I had the dash cut for a modern stereo. They cut the opening and then did some detail metal work to blend it into the curve of the dash. They also removed the dash pad mounts. I am going to have a smooth steel dash like in the early Falcons.

I stopped by a couple weeks later and they had the car in primer.

http://www.candbmotorsports.com/gallery/d/6963-2/12565456_10153565415390756_5374102503323326604_n.j pg

The engine bay looks great with the new panels in.

They epoxy primed and then undercoated the floors. I am still planning on doing additional sound deadening though.

http://www.candbmotorsports.com/gallery/d/6972-2/IMG_20160125_095926600_HDR.jpg

This is where the car sits now. I bought it back home. Time to save up some cash for round 2 at the body shop. Next up they are going to fit the front sheet metal and get the rest of the car smoothed up and ready for paint. In the mean time I am going to fit the motor and trans in the car and start working on building up exhaust and working on fuel and brake plumbing. Inside the car I can start mounting up the Vintage Air A/C and running the new wiring harness.

Items still up in the air that I need to research and decide on are:

Wheels
Hood style
Front bumper/valance style
Body Color (I was thinking stock color like in the rendering but am thinking something late model in a blue or red maybe)
Seats

Sorry for the delay. I sure hope its not another 2-3 years for the next update.

Sorry for the delay. I sure hope its not another 2-3 years for the next update.

Is there any awards for longest project? :D

Not too long after my last post I got the BBF installed into the car and after measuring and contemplating, I decided that it wasn't going to work like I wanted. Brake master was going to need to be relocated, the distributor (let alone the throttle body and filter) wasn't going to clear the hood, I decided that I didn't need a rowdy 700hp big block in the car either.

http://www.candbmotorsports.com/gallery/d/6983-2/20160207_131848.jpg

The car sat in storage for a year while I figured out what I wanted to do. I sold off the BBF and the T56 trans. Here a few months ago I decided that I wanted to get back on this project. I had wrapped up a few other commitments and I wanted to work on MY car for a change. So.... I came to the conclusion that a 5.0L Coyote motor would fit the bill nicely. Yes, its been done a million times over by now, but its a reasonably cheap motor to buy used and makes good power. I am of course deviating from the norm by wanting to use the stock 6L80 automatic transmission behind the motor. There are a few companies working on control packs, but the major road block for most is the size of the trans. It is a huge sob. I am guessing that I will have to modify the tunnel some more, but I did it once, what's another one more. :)

http://www.candbmotorsports.com/gallery/d/7209-2/20170906_181215.jpg

I am also going to work on integrating a late model (2010) Toyota Corolla electric power steering module into the steering column so I can ditch the need for a power steering pump.

http://www.candbmotorsports.com/gallery/d/7205-2/20170901_141916.jpg

The car is still in storage at my brothers shop, but I am working on clearing out the space at home to bring it back in the next month so I can get to work cutting out the BBF motor mounts and putting in the mounts for the Coyote and working on whatever it takes to mount the 6R80 trans. Once the car is home, I have the Vintage Air parts, AAW wiring harness and Aeromotive fuel system parts in boxes that I can be working on. I also contacted the body shop to find a place in line for me so I can get the front end body work done.

I'm not even going to jinx myself by saying something like I did before about not finishing in a few years. lol

Glad you haven't given up. This is a cool build regardless of engine choice. Good luck with it.
