If you are a novice doing it yourself it might be easier if you went with a tri stage paint rather than a true candy. I used House Of Kolor Kandy Base to paint my GTO. Stages are:

black sealer
3 coats silver base
4 coats Kandy Base (color was Brandywine)
3 coats clear
wet sand
2 flow coats clear
cut and buff

True candies are hard to paint. The Kandy Base was similar to painting a metallic paint. Just have to be careful to avoid tiger striping.

Mine is BASF Glasurit, Silver base with I think 7-8 coats of red candy. Painters don't really like to paint this as it's pretty custom and alot of work and next to impossible to match if anything ever happened. But it sure looks great in person. I love it.

Like Don said, House of Kolors has a Shimrin Kandy base/clear paint. I'm using their apple red, which is a base/clear version of a kandy paint job. I did the firewall in my shop and was very happy. Put down a black base, then sprayed the base and clear.

As dhutton said, true candies are very hard to paint. But, are the most beautiful color when done right. I say go for it. Just make sure you get someone to do it who knows what they are doing. Many painters who have been painting for years cannot paint a candy if they have never done it before.
