.. Hey everyone just wanted to introduce myself, name's Art.
I have a 1967 Camaro RS/SS #'s matching Camaro. Red on Red, 350 with a Muncie 4 spd. - bone stock. Have owned it for over 10 years.
I bought it pretty much completed, as it had all the stock, showroom amenities, ie - stock lined trunk, matching spare tire, with jack all neat and presentable.
Engine compartment stock and clean.
I purchased the car for my dad to enjoy, as he had bought one, right off the showroom floor, when he came back from Viet Nam. ,and had to sell it once I came along, and the family got larger. He got to enjoy this car for a few years, until Lymphoma Cancer took him from us.
I always drooled in H.S. every time I saw one, was infatuated. So figured I could enjoy it along with my Pops.
Found the car on line, bought it out of Spokane Washington. Had an insurance adjuster do an inspection on it, and had it shipped to me, Here in Hollister, CA.
So I started tearing into it a little over 3-4 years ago. When I was driving down the road with my 3 kids in car seats in the back, and noticed that when I would change gears, my kid in the right rear car seat would move up and down. After investigating the matter, noticed that i could see the road below, right thru the floor board.
From there, the saga begins..... to be continued..

Plans on the car..
well, they have changed drastically in the last two years.
This car is pretty much complete. Engine, tranny, numbers matching.
The under floor was pretty rotted and replacement of floor pans ensued.
After getting it back from the body shop that did the work, the headaches began. They not only incorrectly installed them, they managed to leave one of the frame rails forward about 1" more than the other. Which noticeably makes my axle out of whack. I took that body shop to court, judge ordered it corrected, they attempted to correct it, did not, judge ordered them to pay back all monies. They obviously had other issues as well and claimed bankruptcy and sold the business off to someone else.
SO, I decided to mini-tub it, and while in process, have the issue with the axle repaired and or put in correct alignment.
I purchased a DSE mini-tub kit with 3" drop springs.
I and had a Mini-tub installed. I tossed and turned on it for a while, cutting into this RS/SS. But it had to be done.
However, when I recently got it back, low an behold, the new 9" rear end, that I purchased was still sitting in the same spot as the 12 bolt rear end that was pulled out. This "fabricator/machinist/engine builder" I went with, didn't bother to check the alignment of the axle. We had discussed the issue with the axle not being aligned, and he actually initially told me that i didn't tell him about it. only later to recant that and agree that we had talked about it.
So now I have this newly installed axle, mini-tub kit, DSE shocks, narrowed gas tank, somewhat undercoated, and it needs to be disassembled and corrected.
My friends, its not always wise to go with the cheapest price. Not to mention the hack job that was done installing the tub kit, and over-cutting the trunk pan, and having to add metal to fill the 3/4" - 1" gaps that were created. I was pretty disgusted with the work. I asked him not to under coat it until i got a chance to take pictures of the welding, but he said, too late, I already coated it. "gobbed" it on more like. There's definitely a problem with my car.
While having the car tubbed, I came across Mr. Rich Bermea. Road Touring Customs. I walked in his shop, and my jaw dropped... I was In heaven. There he had 3 68 camaros in the shop, and a Chevelle. I looked around, had Flash's 68 Camaro outside front, and two more camaros in the outside rear of the shop. They had just got back from Run to the Coast that past weekend.
And so begins the path to getting things done right.

I think you said it best, cheapest is not always best. Also remember most expensive is not always best either. Just find a shop you can trust that does the work you expect, the way you expect and keeps you in the loop.
You're in good hands w Rich...

Welcome ART!
Sorry to hear of the issues.... I'm living proof that you can have just as many issues with cars done in TOP NOTCH EXPENSIVE shops - so it's not just your choice of low price. Although - there's generally a reason for that low price...
Rich can get you all fixed up!

Thank's for the support.! :D
I have one major pressing dilemma. Do I take this double badge car and remove all the good condition stock parts and turn it into a pro-touring car?
I went and Mini-tubbed it, and was thinking of putting in another motor. Setting the stock #'s matching aside, and taking off most of the stock
parts.
What am I going to do with all these stock parts, I can't sell them, as they go with the original car.
What would you do?

That's where I get hung up again.
I was all gung ho, to re-fresh this relic with new front suspension, 410 motor with all the fixn's. Rich tells me different. Gets me unsure of what I am doing. He says, put the stock motor back in, freshen it up, give it a little more life, and set it up back stock. To keep the integrity of the double badge car. Don't know if I'm going to be happy with the car in that state.
We have both scratched our heads on it, and I think I want to keep the path I made up my mind on, back two years ago, and set it up pro-touring. It is unfortunate, that it is such a complete original car. Its a tough decision.

410 motor eh? You definitely talked to Rich about that and Eric's motor I'm guessing.... :D
Art, you're the only one who can decide this one. It's a toughie but it's obvious you wont be satisfied with a stockish upgrade with bolt-ons. We can tell already. :)
And again, if it's cut into already, what's the hold up now?

Well, She's off and running!.... currently named "Joan" by Rich Bermea... As in "Joan Rivers" due to all the cosmetic "surgery" she's been thru.
Complete Floor is out, dropping the rear end this weekend, pulling the front clip in the next few weeks.
Currently working on my other 67 Camaro Project at home. Getting that front clip ready to transplant on to "Joan". With some new suspension upgrades, to allow for some back road carving.
Looks like "Joan" will be getting put back together and kept somewhat original. Double hump heads are getting ported, and massaged a little. Headers, looking for a Z28 original intake - if anyone out there has one.

So here's what happens in ALL of these remodels.....
Everything LOOKS great - until you do one part of it over... so the trim looks great - until you put on fresh paint - then the perfectly good trim looks like crap -- Seat upholstery looks fresh - until the new dash goes in... The wiring that was fine - isn't any good.... Well -- you get the picture. Trust us ALL on this -- it IS what happens! Oh -- and then the "well as long as we're here we might as well do....." Kicks in too!

As a home builder and remodeler, I don't think this is the norm. I know we go out of our way to cover peoples furniture, carpets, floors,ect... even if it looks like crap, and should be in the dumpster. Unless I've been directly told its going to be tossed..... cover it up!..
Thankfully, that is done and over-with.. the project is past that point, and its looking good!.

So Joan has a numbers Matching 350, of which I now intend to keep in the car. Opting to keep the Camel Hump Heads that it came with. I know, loss of horsepower, that aluminum heads can give, but its the last thing this car has to keep its originality. After opening her up, there were a few issues, which made me glad I decided to completely re-build.

If the car is worth ANY money with a matching numbers BLOCK -- now is the time to park the block = protecting your investment....
Doesn't look to me like it's worth saving any of those parts except the block and if the heads are matching.
For less than the cost of a rebuild you can buy an entire crate motor with a warranty from GM.
Compare before you buy is my advice.

So I'm freshening up the motor, having the camel hump heads ported, polished and worked on a bit to get some umph out of them. Waste of money vs aluminum, perhaps, but If machined properly should prove to be just enough for a daily driver.

So the body shop, that is "painting" my car, has, for several months now, put my car in the back of the shop. Too many commercial accounts, and not enough time to give the custom jobs attention. So I decided to pick it up, iron out the details needed prior to paint, and have Rich, at Road Touring Customs give her the attention she deserves.
http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr131/califconstruct/Joan/IMG_2375.jpg
Underside was gone over with this stuff.. although the new DSE wheel wells, and frame rails were not prepped properly, and the coating did not take. I wonder what else was not properly prepped.... um.. possibly the whole underside???.

Time to maybe re-think how you choose shops??
yea, I hear you!.. I give people the benefit of the doubt, too much. This is supposed to be a "Qality" shop. No reason for that undercoat to get jacked up like that. :smiley_smack:
This is a buddy of mine's shop. As a friend he is giving me a "great deal" but, like a few other members, paid up front, and have been shuffled to the back. Granted some of the delays were because of me changing the direction of the build, but this car has been in and out of this shop since August of 2010. That's 3 years. Its really time to move it out. I have been working on fixing the cars issues since early 2007.. so its been a 6 yr project. :hairpullout:
I should have a handle on it now tho. I trust that he'll make good, and address the car in the detail I expect it to be. It also helps out that he'll read this post, and know that when it's done, the work will be judged, and commented on. Right Kenny!...:twak:
Its scheduled for paint the first week of January. :popcorn2:

I was being kind of flippant when I posted that… but it is true that many members here have made BAD choices on the shops. Some have even managed to make it even worse by moving from one bad shop to another even worse shop!
I have no clue for the reasons why - nor am I saying I could have done it better or different.
I do know that there are shops on here that seem to get a project - start to finish its done - and it's killer… So we know there are good choices out there.
Hey -- You know I made a bad decision and took my '32 to SAR - paid top dollar -- and then had to take it to another top shop to get it drivable. In the end it was a bad choice on my part -- but the car ended up DONE and pretty damn nice it just took me some effort. And it shouldn't have.

A little update..
Car was painted in April. even tho it took a long time, I'm pretty pleased with the paint job. after the initial primer coat, after the rough body work, they primered, sanded, primered, sanded primered, sanded and then painted. 4 meticulous layers of refining the body lines. It looks good.
a few blurbs tho.. while jamming it, they did manage to paint the interior door parts and the dash between the dash pad and the glass, that are a satin maroon, to the exterior color.. so that had to be re-painted, and my nice newly powder coated front frame has paint on one side. :smiley_smack:

It's been literally held hostage at this shop. Not a happy camper, but.. I'll be picking it up soon. Got a new 4 post lift for the shop, so I can keep it out of harms way, when I bring it home to finish up the interior, wiring ect.

So Rich and Rick at "Road Touring Customs" have been diligently plucking away at working on "Joan". and boy, has it been a ride.
several hiccups (engine wise). but seaming thru it. Its been frustrating and eye opening at the same time. We were going for making it to Optima at Willows!.. but.... the rebuilt heads had issues, wrong pan gaskets, oh and the cam was a mystery - (was supposed to be hydraulic roller - but builder installed solid roller re-gound cam and used lifters). Go figure!
Here are some progress pics.

So We didn't make it to Willows.. After getting the engine all prettied up and set up, set on a test stand, ran it for a bit.. the stock heads pulled a few studs (which the builder pinned). and come to find out he never ported or polished. So I splurged and went with some new AFR heads.. those AFR heads decided to stick a valve, which in turn, flattened my cam, and dispersed shavings thru-ought the bottom end.
http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr131/califconstruct/WP_20150309_17_52_57_Pro.jpg
After this happened.. I was like, the hell with it.. I'm not about to throw more money into this #s matching motor.. time to move on and shelf that motor. at one time, I didn't want to take the #'s matching motor out, but, I'll be happier with what is to come. Luckily,,, I got an opportunity to get a smoking deal on a new LS6... so... on to the transformation.

Modified gas tank, shortened 2" to fit offset shackles,
dse 3" drop springs,

Info on the Joint connections:
I read somewhere, that they glued the piping together instead of using a clamp. so I gave it a whirl. holds great. Masked off the joint, Used superglue first., then later once I test fit, masked off again again and gave it a once over with abs black glue to fill any uneven cut/void to seal properly. (minuscule imperfection). I did make some marks in pen, that I wish I should have used pencil tho.

So,,
Its been some time since I posted the progress, and or lack of.
After being at Richie's for a while, and his scheduling conflict of progressing on the project within a reasonable amount of time, I made the move to Pacific Fabrication .. aka.. Tilden Motorsports in Gilroy.
Rich got the car to a point, to get it over to get the exhaust made by King exhaust in Morgan Hill, however It went over to Pacific Fabrication first, to get an evaluation of what needed to happen next, to button up the LS6.
After going over the car, motor, to do items with Kevin Stearns, we made a plan to change out the headers for some stainless works, and some minor engine mods while the clip and motor were easily accessible.;
Custom ground cam
Hardened chromoly pushrods
Double roller timing set
Dual valvesprings w/ titanium retainers
Moly coated rockers with pre-installed trunnion bearing
High volume oil pump
NGK TR6 spark plug set
I took it home, and ordered those parts. Meanwhile, did some interior demo again, to remove some bolt brackets that were used for the rear sway bar that was removed, (since it is now a torque arm), installed the clutch master cylinder, some wiring, and set up a few speakers with baffles.
its over there now, engine internals are done, set back in car, headers in, buttoning up wiring..

So when i went to check on the progress, and got me a little surprise!, I had origionally looked into, and asked about the FAST intake and throttle body., and then ultimately decided it was not in the budget at the moment.
Well low and behold, I walk up to the car and what do I see!!...:confused59: :D :wow:

Well, I'm still holding out, in hopes that Kevin Stearn's - intentionally set that up as a way of sponsoring and or advertisement for Tilden Motorsports and Pacific Fabrication. :poke: - I definitely didn't authorize it, I decided with the minimal hp gains, I would distribute my funds elsewhere, but how can one say, hey, I don't want go fast parts, once they are already on! ?
On the down side, is I was looking at chipping my 2016 Ram MegaCab Diesel, but since the right thing to do, would be pony up, I now have to not get those go fast parts for my daily driver. :hairpullout:
I haven't consulted with him, only with his parts manager, so we'll see where this goes once we actually consult on it.(fingers crossed).:tiptoe: He'll make it good...He's a great guy, and really like his passion of the sport.
Now that is nice .... scope creep? You won't regret adding go fast parts EVER!

I definitely agree with you there. It also helps if they look pretty under the hood too!.
All in all, I'm just eager to get behind the wheel, and be able to drive this
5 yr plus project. Its been way too long of a road, and riddled with empty promises and unrealistic completion dates. I'm sure it will be all worth it once I can enjoy it. :burnout:

Yea, I believe so, I haven't' seen it on the ground, but guys at the shop said they left a spacer on the backside to have a bit more clearance away from the inner wheel well. outside is maxed out.
Wheel ended up as a 12.5" - 6 3/8" B.S.

It's an 8". I measured the stock hurst shifter it had, which was like a 12" and figured the 8" world work. Haven't actually sat in it and felt the feeling of it,
(didn't dawn on me at the time). I'll check it out on Monday and get back to you.
It looks proportionally correct, plus the location of the stock shifter was moved back 4" with the T56 transmission.
I'm keeping the stock center console, and will get creative with the gap between console and dash.

Nope,, it would fit.. but it wouldn't leave much room for the suspension to travel., so underneath it went. .. looks good so far.. haven't got a chance to look it over.. Had it picked up and towed back to Tilden Motorsports to button up the cut outs, and some Dyno tuning.

No, still stock. I can tell you that sharp turns are a bit challenging. Tires do rub on the frame a bit on making u-turns. no problem auto crossing on the one time I took it.
Definitely affected my turning radius, but not noticeable on everyday driving.

Awesome Camaro! And you are an inspiration. I have the same car that is numbers matching and want to mini tub as well. Had the car since 1995 and it's been sitting in primer ready for paint since 1997. Never wanted to finish it since everyone was telling me not to cut it. Going to cut on it soon.

Good stuff! .. cut it!... I too was in turmoil.. on weather or not to cut...... best decision I've made. no regrets. I know it upped the car's value... to a pro-touring guy... not a concourse guy (boring). Good luck on your build!

No, still stock. I can tell you that sharp turns are a bit challenging. Tires do rub on the frame a bit on making u-turns. no problem auto crossing on the one time I took it.
Definitely affected my turning radius, but not noticeable on everyday driving.
Don't see it as a problem at all.

sorry ,didnt relise you were running tru turn as well, regards

Hi,
No, no true-turn on this front clip. Was planning on it with the previous front clip i built, but ended up getting this LS motor/Tranny set up with DSE parts.
Actually sold that front clip that had the tru-turn.

I'll have to dig up the tag. I remember not letting my foot off until i was well past the mark.... actually I didn't really know where the "mark" was. Adrenalin was pumping. Take off was ****ty.. Nervous jitters gave me tunnel vision. stock Speedo was pegged, I was running out of track.. laid on the break and got her a little sideways. Whooo nelly!.. ....I should have ran again.

Wow, haven't been on here for a while... my bad..
It has been a very busy year. Got to do some great things with the car.
Instagram has several updates.. @protourdream.
So I got to do a cameo with Sammy Hagar and the Fontana Police Department... yes my car was the main part of me being in it.

Definitely enjoying it when I get the chance.
If this coming year is anything like last year... I won't be doing any Optima. Thankfully my businesses have been inundated with projects, so getting away for extra days makes it a task.. especially since I like to take the family on some exotic, lengthy vacations!. Kids are in their teen high-school years, and focusing on getting that quality time with them.
Also..., I have Vince@Meanstreets performance tweeking some items. Mainly my brakes. Baer 6p front and back, however I have been having some serious issues with "Knockback", which makes driving it challenging. Literally had to pump the brakes twice to get them to grab. So we changed out a new Baer remaster master cylinder and the booster. That unit helped, but made it too sensitive, so changing to a smaller size bore. Hoping this solves that issue. otherwise I'm ditching the booster.
Suspension needs some love in the shock department.

No, I have since changed the front end to Speedtech.. A-Arms, tall spindle. Viking double adjustable shocks.
I need to get it properly adjusted for caster/camber.. seems like my turning radius has diminished more.
No Tru-turn.
