I've got a work truck that I want to paint, never painted a vehicle before and figured my beater would be a good practice piece. The truck has the factory paint on it now, do I need to spray it with primer or can I just knock the clear down and spray it? Going from blue to flat black if that matters

Depending on the budget and the quality you 're after. It would be wise to buy a quart kit of catalyzed black sealer before the paint. It will make it much easier to get better coverage and ease of application of color

^^^^What he said plus you won't have to refine your sand scratch as much go with a wet on wet sealer. You can finish it in a 320 to 400 grit scratch and then seal and paint. Also when you sand the oe finish I'm sure you will have some areas that you sand through the paint to the oe sealer or metal. If you seal you won't have to worry about those areas.

The paint is actually in good shape. Only reason I'm painting it is because I put some black wheels on it and blacked out the windows, headlights, taillights, and parking lights. Everything else is black, figured it was fitting
