Based in downtown Akron, Ohio, Gearstar has been serving the performance aftermarket for more than a decade. From core disassembly to final assembly, all transmissions are built in-house at our 6,100 square-foot facility.

At Gearstar, we know that one size doesn’t fit all. Whether you’re building 400hp street cruiser or a 1,200hp race car, we have a transmission that will suit your needs. Our GM offerings include the TH350, TH400, 700R4, 2004R, 4L60E, 4L65E, 4L70E, 4L80E, 4L85E, and 6L80E. For Fords, we have AOD, AODE, C4, C6, E4OD, and 4R70W transmissions. Finally, our Chrysler line consists of the Torqueflite 727, 5-45RFE, and NAG-1 automatics.

Gearstar’s team of transmission technicians have more than 100 years of experience under their collective belts. To ensure the highest in quality control, each builder specializes in one specific type of transmission. Before shipment, every Gearstar transmission is tagged with the builder’s initials, which promotes pride in craftsmanship and reinforces our commitment to excellence.

Only premium quality planetaries, hubs, friction discs, steels, servos, drums, and pistons are used in Gearstar transmissions. A tremendous effort is made to keep our workstations as clean as an operating room.

In order to promote an efficient workflow, every Gearstar technician is assigned their own spacious work station. Gearstar maintains an extensive inventory of parts to reduce turnaround time as much as possible.

Before shipment, every single transmission that Gearstar builds is dyno tested. This ensures that the transmission is in perfect working order when a customer installs it in their car. During testing, the transmission is put through a gamut of noise, leak, vibration and hydraulic pressure tests. Likewise, converter stall speed, shift timing and shift quality are verified as well. In the rare event that a faulty component is discovered, dyno testing allows fixing the transmission before shipment, eliminating potential headaches for customers.

With all the hard work that goes into building each Gearstar transmission, a generic shipping crate won’t cut it. We custom build every single shipping crate for each specific model of transmission so that they are delivered in perfect condition. The crates feature an interior frame constructed with 2x4s, and an integrated pallet. Transmissions are wrapped in a fluid-proof bag.

Equipped with a full-service bay, interesting projects are always rolling in and out of the Gearstar shop. We perform multiple overdrive transmission swaps every week. This type of hands-on experience enables us to stay in tune with our customers’ needs.

Time is often at a premium when building a project car. To process your order as quickly as possible, Gearstar maintains a large stock of core transmissions on site.

Gearstar’s goal is to provide the highest-quality transmissions on the market, and we spare no expenses on state-of-the-art equipment to make that happen. Our $60,000 Mart washer can clean up to three transmission cases to like-new condition in five minutes.

Welcome. Did I read about your shop in a SEMA magazine or ATRA or something like that?

Possibly. We have been very fortunate to have received a fair amount of media coverage. Do you recall what the details for the story were?

It talked about the business side of things, and employee training and retention. The most valuable thing in any transmission shop is the employees!
