Well guys I have consigned my Camaro to the Mecum auction in Indy this May. It has a Friday night TV time slot. I have joked that I am 99% sure it will run during a commercial break but as long as there are two guys there that want it bad enough it shouldn't matter.

Here is the listing.

That's the best of the Mecum's, great auction. And yes, that's what happened with the Chevelle. I drove it onto the block as they went to commercial...........

Good luck Jeff! I've been debating doing something similar but haven't convinced myself to do it - we'll all be watching with our fingers crossed!

Thanks guys. I may take some time off before I have another project and concentrate on winning the Spec Miata Championship in Midwest Council this year.

Jody, every car I have ever wanted to watch on an auction it seems like gets cut to commercial. Seems like Murphy's law.

Skip, I actually called Rob McGaffin and bought a couple of shots from when he shot the car for the magazine to include in my listing.

Thanks James. I need all of the crossed fingers I can get  But seriously, if it does not bring my number I will be out with it at some events this summer.

Don't let Dana strong arm you into dropping that reserve to early. ;)

Don't worry, remember auctions are how I make a living. I am going in with a net low number in mind. Hopefully two or more guys will like it enough that I don't have to worry about my minimum.

Good luck Jeff. It's a beautiful car. Of course being a 67 just makes it a bit classier than the rest, of course!

What do you guys think about having the rear spoiler anodized black? It would kind of balance out the satin black strip around the nose. Would it look better for resale?

It's probably not a huge deal either way, but I like your thinking... I would match the front and rear spoilers if it were me whether it's black or aluminum I think they are linked aesthetically.

I like the contrast it gives so I'd leave it. Let them change it if they don't like it.

Plus the pics are out there already too. So no surprises this way for those already interested in it.

Damn Jeff, hate to hear this. It's a great car, after meeting you and seeing the car run at last years Heidt's Event, I know what this car is capable of.

Good Luck with the sale!!

Thanks Scott! I will be back, maybe quicker than you think if the car does not sell. Otherwise look for me next year with something else.

I leave tomorrow for Indy. I have been spending the last couple of weeks cleaning, cleaning and tidying up loose ends. I ended up having the rear spoiler anodized black. It really turned out nice. It sort of balances out the satin black stripe around the nose.

Wish me luck, or better yet, come out and bid high and often.

I asked them before it went on the block to find the real money, that I wanted to net 70k but I may drop a little more depending on the mood. They never found real money and pretended they had bids from 50k or whatever to 71k. Disappointing. 4 vacation days and $1000 plus in expenses to come down to the two minutes that matter and that's it.

I probably would have taken $65 or $70.

That's a lot of car for that money. :wow: Well built and with the Camaro hype it seems resale would remain strong.

Jeff,

Sorry you did not get what you wanted. I am curious and since you are in the business yourself what would have happened if you lifted the reserve at 71K? You said the real money stopped at 50K so would Mecum have bought it?

You can only lift the reserve when there is real money; so he could of lifted it at $50k. After that it was all just for show, hoping someone else would throw a real bid in.

I'm stumped as well, what do you mean by "real money" and "pretended they had bids"?

I'm stumped as well, what do you mean by "real money" and "pretended they had bids"?

They kept advancing the money and ringmen we going yep like they were pointing to a bidder in the crowd but there was no one actually bidding. The very thing I told Frank Mecum not to have them do. It was like the auctioneer decided it was never going to bring my reserve so they didn't try. I had told Frank when I went up there that they needed to find real money (bids) because I was really flexible on the price.

I am not sure what happened, and after 2000 cars this week he is not going to remember. Just a real crappy situation.

I was sorry to see this Jeff. I still think that was the best auction to try, but you need at least one guy in the room that wants it (if the house is bidding it to the reserve), and two preferably.

There was at least one guy who had been on the phone while looking at it and shook his head no when the ringman asked him if he wanted in as the "bid" approached 70k. Depending where his limit was, we may have been able to put something together. I tried to find him after, but couldn't.

It's called PHANTOM BIDDING.....

The "house" just tosses in numbers like someone was/is bidding. Real bidders are called "real money"...

What you don't know - and it happens all the time - is that the "pros" have guys that will bid to "bump" a bid along, but they know what the reserve is. And sometimes a seller will buy their own car back in a no reserve auction rather than lose money.
