"Just A Camaro"

I am pretty new to this site and am truly amazed by the wealth of knowledge and skill by other builders on this site. I look at some of the cars built on here and think, "wow if I could only have a portion of the skill that these guys have". I have been a drag racer for years and have built a lot of drag cars along with an array of street and show cars. The Pro-Touring scene is pretty new to me, but I am here to stay. I will continue to learn and put my spin on this style of unique automobiles.

I thought I would share some pictures of a recent build we did for Greg Cullum. Most of you will know him from his amazing Big Block, Twin Turbo 69 Chevelle Convertible. Greg is a great guy to work with and has excellent taste and style in cars as I am sure most of you have noticed. Greg is a HARD CORE Chevelle guy, to be more specific a 69 Chevelle guy. I had to laugh each time he would speak of this build as "Just a Camaro", hence the title.

Well here we go. The car started off as a fairly solid 69 Camaro that someone had already put new sheet metal on. Greg supplied us with some great parts to work with from companies like Detroit Speed and Forgeline. The car is running a LS with a Kenne Belle Supercharger. As you will see, I tend to put my own spin on things and modified quite a few things. Let me know what you guys think.

The cage is meant to add rigidity to the car while remaining easy to get in and out of. Because of the minimalistic style of the cage I decided to beef it up underneath. With the cage going through the rockers to underbody bars that tie in the cage from front to back and tie into the rockers at 3 points. We also utilized DSE subframe connectors, but once again I felt the need to modify them a little. Since this front subframe was not going to be a bolt in style any longer, I felt the mounting could be improved upon.

I like the car to be as rigid as possible and give the shocks the chance to do their job.

I will post up more pics soon. The fab work is done and it's now getting the body finished up. I just got the new prototype adapter back for the blower inlet, so Greg should be running her this summer.

Oh, I should have mentioned. That blower in the pic is not keeping that elbow coming around to the side for the throttle body. It will be drawing the air through the cowl instead. ;) Will look waaaaaaay better and pick up some extra ponies.

This pic shows why those shock reserovoirs were pointing up like that to the floor. Makes them a little easier to adjust and keep them out of the way.

I also don't care for the way the bottom of the quarters are as well as the bottom of the tail light panel. Especially when it had 2 different brands of aftermarket quarters previously installed (they didn't match). So I made a panel on the bottom that would not only round things up and smooth them off, it would also mate up to the underbody panel to cover up the fuel tank and help with air flow.

I would not do much under it either. That was just pushing the bars back up after dropping them to weld the tops of them. Then the lift arms went back under it.

Here are a few pics of the firewall mods with the air breather being mounted in it. Windshield wipers, cowl screen and A/C all funtion and mount as normal. I just had to make new mounts for the Vintage Air unit. It got lowered about an inch.

There is a removable panel on the firewall that gives you access to the filter. ;)

Here is a view showing the panel under the rear. It will actually have 2 naca ducts in it to direct air flow over the rear end cooler that is mounted between the gas tank and license plate. It will bleed the air out the license plate hole. You can also see the bracket for the removable parachute mount. That away Greg will be able to run the mile events with it as well.

Obviously, the car is still on the lift. Ride height is lower than that.

Thanks, I like to build things that are just a little different. I have a couple more Camaros in the shop getting similar treatments. And a Chevy II with a twin turbo 427 LS, C6 transaxle and a lot of custom metal work including a wide body job on a chromoly tube chassis.:thumbsup:

Greg decided to go with dual Braille Batterys. So I made a custom mount and recessed it down in the trunk floor a bit.

first i want to thank scott for the awesome work he did on this car.i told him what i was looking for,no pro street look all pro-touring, easy to get in and out of[no monkey bars all over me],safe car,rigid car to use the shocks for what they were designed to do.he is one of they few that actually did research on what pro-touring is all about and what the cars are capable of doing.i told him about all the different events these cars are doing and wanted everything he could think of done the first time and not back and forth and adding things on later.i think he did a great job on this because everytime i went to his shop he had a new list of things to do.as soon as i get a little time i will tell about the rest of the car. greg

it was a real pleasure to work on this project. It gave me alot of inspiration to get my own first gen done. I think my drag racing days are behind me and I could really get into this type of cars. I like the combonation of power, handling and shear cool factor of these cars. I am even selling my aluminum 565 and going LS :thumbsup:
