Captain obvious.
Sponsorship is possible but not to the beginner unless you have one hell of a motive. Hell, I've got the thread with the most views on this here website and I get a part at cost here and there.

I am glad to know now that posts on this forum get parts at cost....
I was looking for someone who actually has sponsorship and can explain how it works for them.....
So if there is anyone who has information on what most companies do, expect, etc.....
Opinions not wanted.....Facts are truth!
Thanks to those who give info, thanks to those who state their opinions....remember opinions are like A__holes everyone has one and they all stink.

I apologize, I've just seen this exact same thread quite a few times. Eveybody thinks they are building the next biggest thing and vendors should throw parts at their vision. You need a good story or a proven track record to make it happen. The thread Jody presented is a good resource. Frank is the master of working angles.

I recently sent out emails to between 25-35 companies asking for sponsorship. My project will end up a ministry program and the build itself is one also helping young men to find lost values that we don't really teach anymore (Integrity, Justice, Honor, Courage are the key points). With having a message like that, and I played the "I'm a OEF Vet" card, I got 1 partial sponsorship from "Bed Rug". There were a couple of companies that I could have pursued harder "Royal Purple & Magnaflow" and probably gotten sponsorships but they want list of Shows and Events that the car will be at in the next 12months and with finding a new job this summer and everything I don't think I could make enough shows for sponsorship. Most minimum is 12 per year. All I really had to offer was internet advertising. My build thread is posted on 4 different forums with total members of around 250,000 and almost 5000 thread views between the 4 different build threads. It's hard, but it can be done. Just remember your selling something, explain to them what the benefit is to them and why they shouldn't pass up this opportunity. Just my .02 but seein as how I got 1 company out of 35 to sponsor me, my way didn't seem to work too well, probably something to do with my spiritual obligation to explain the motives behind building the truck itself, can't really teach about courage when I won't explain the whole story for fear of not getting money and parts now can I. Hope this helps more than it discourages you.

My $.02.....
Get a car, enter some events, and then build a website sponsors can view. Use that website as your resume. Build yourself a decent track record and then start sending out letters.
Good luck

Build it and the might come.
Unless you are already signed up to have the car at SEMA this year. Companies dont want to wait years for the sponsorship money to start making them money.

It's a simple answer. How are you going to generate business for the company your trying to get parts from. You should worry more about what your plan is and not about if I get your part I'll do some pr for you.
Kinda like going to a bank asking for money, you better have a good plan so they can see they will get paid also.

Just wanted to say thanks, I know this question is old but I have never known how it works and now I got a better understanding.
The bank reference really put it in perspective for me.
thanks guys, talk to you out there on the forum.

I've got a few smalls sponsorships going for me and let me be the first to tell you that it is NOT easy, but it can be done if you know how to get your message across. Like others have said, everyone thinks theirs is the next big thing, that people will flock to it when they see all the cool parts, etc.
The reality is far from this idea. You have to really have something unique and enticing to bring to the table. Product development, guaranteed exposure, high end shop support, etc.
If you want some help, I can send you copies of my own project, links to what I'm doing, etc. and can even put you in contact with a few people I know who have taken the time to educate me on the ways of the force as it were.
EDIT: A friend of mine who knows his way around a sponsorship once told me, "My first trip to SEMA was on my dime. Every trip after that, I had alot of help."
