What's your plan for the powertrain??

I'll be really interested to see how this shakes down! I have a '66 F100 that I'm planning something semi-similar with. I'm still trying to determine exactly where I want to go with it though...

I sold my Holden HQ rolling chassis a few months back less motor. I have ordered replacement cradles, suspension, gearbox, brakes etc....
The engine is an LS6 2004 model. I will look at a TVS1900 or TVS2300 supercharger kit.

The second red 1976 F100 is mine if you have any questions, it retains the I-beam suspension but it is on air ride. The first truck is a 67 F100 and has a modified front clip with double a-arms arrangement and air ride as well. I know the 67 truck very well too.

Luv the ride height of your F100. Notching the front rails of the F100 chassis will let the corvette cradle sit close to the chassis to give a similar ride height. Do you have any interior pic's of your F100??.

PM'd.

Cleaning up the chassis rails today, I still have crossmembers to cut off. Should be on the chassis table tomorrow. So far 42 hours have been put into this project, keeping track so others mite wonder why Pro shops charge the money they do for this type of work.

Fitting the frame rails to the table today. Quick mock up of the Corvette cradle and the passengers side frame. Hope the pic's explain how this will be done.I'll spend a day measuring and fitting both frame rails so they are aligned perfectly. Good thing the granno worker made the shed foor 100% flat.

More work in the garage today. Progress is good coming together nicely.

Mock up of the frame rail.

http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss183/thomo5150/F100/008.jpg

Chassis rail needs to be notched 3 inches, that will give me the ride height I want.

Chassis is level, the torque tube is level, with the cradle being lifted 3 inches it looks like I wont have to modify the trans tunnel:)

Yes I do, I was building the One Tonner with the same running gear, a guy opened up his cheque book and brought the chassis. These are ther parts left over like the LS6 etc. F100 is a lot easier to do than the One Tonner.

Before

I think it will handle lol, look at the CG with the LS6 engine between the rails compared to the old cleveland. The final mock up for the front is done, i'll now make upper a arm brakets, crossmembers etc. Working on the rear rails today, its 3 weeks since I brought the F100 happy with the speed its coming together at........

Setting the cradle height today, the lower frame rails of the Effy need to be trimed. You'll notice the frame profile is not the same from drivers side to passengers side. I wanted to keep the cradle between the rails without notching the effys chassis and losing strength etc..... The tricky bit is measuring the steering arm movement then welding in the rite size tube so the steering arms run thru the rails. Now you can see why I widened the chassis rails the cradle is snug between and it still can be removed from underneath the chassis. More measuring and design tomorrow, the rear frame rails arer sorted I'm waiting for some plate to be bent up these will look pretty trick.........

Planning is the key, trust me for ever change I make to the Effy something else must change too. I've widened the chasssis so I must mod cab mounts and the front horns to bolt the radiator support on. No big deal but there are subtle changes that needed to be made which you must get rite in the planning process. Ride height was critical for this project and there are so many limiting factors as well. When I researched ride height with IFS on F100's I needed to determine what ride height I could achieve with the Vette drivetrain. There where a lot of Jag IFS swaps for Effys and the new trend seemed to be the Ford Crown Victoria IFS swaps in the USA. Here's something I learnt by studying one of these swaps which I then had to factor in to my conversion.

72 F100 CV cradle fitted.

http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss183/thomo5150/F100/DSCN3221.jpg

The guy did a nice job and it was set to the factory spec's of the wheel centreline.

http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss183/thomo5150/F100/DSCN3338.jpg

He put some 20's on which I liked and could see what my F100 would look like.

http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss183/thomo5150/F100/DSCN3910.jpg

Here's the suble change I needed to make in the planning. I liked the ride height but I new mine would be lower. I notice the tyre is set forward and the gap doesn't look rite to me.

http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss183/thomo5150/F100/DSCN3924.jpg

The guy then lowered the F100 1.5 inch which made the wheel location stand out more.

http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss183/thomo5150/F100/DSCN4275.jpg

http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss183/thomo5150/F100/DSCN4284.jpg

http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss183/thomo5150/F100/IMG_1530.jpg

Things like this which need to be sorted before you start cutting or welding will make or break a swap and the way it looks. How many of you would think that I mucked up the wheel centreline location if I left it in the factory spec location. The change being made to where the centreline of the wheel is for this conversion is not easy, I had to determine the length of the wheelbase of 116.9 inch and subtract where I thought the wheel centreline should be then that change had to be factored in to the torque tube length before I ordered it.

Just one problem on my list, I think if I listed them I'd have to longest build thread...............

You are widening the whole frame? Couldn't you have just widened the front and rear sections or is that more work then doing the whole thing and playing with the cab mounts etc?
I thinking of something along the lines of how some people take different width frame sections from one car, like a g body, and connect it to the original frame around the firewall, like on an old truck where that swap is popular.

I wanted to use the corvette cradle so widening the frame an inch wasn't a drama, getting the rear rails from 37 inches to 32 is the trick and still making the frame look stock, pic's will be up on this soon....

OK here's what was done today.

Cradle set at height and centred.

Checked the ride height, the lower controll arm is level. The bottom of the tyre is aligned with the chassis tables top rail, 100% correct. Dont mind where the top A arms are they are just bolted there trying to help get the tyre level. New A arm brakets being fabed now.

http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss183/thomo5150/F100/017-3.jpg

These pic's make me happy, im 99% sure I will not have to mod the firewall, the cab will bolt back on and clear the firewall and the torque tube. Bonus...........

Not the best reference pic but the back of the cleveland sits square to where the cab mount is from memory????

http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss183/thomo5150/F100/f100019.jpg

Ok tomorrow I'll add more things like an exhaust , front sway bar etc..... I'll then start fitting the front and centre crossmembers as well as the cradle brakets. The chassis will be boxed, but I'll try to keep it stock looking as best I can. It's coming up to a month since I picked the Effy up happy with the progress but I expect delays along the way like wrong parts or delayed parts. Guess thats the joy of building something there is always the unknown factor.....

Gearbox has arrived so its game on. I'll get the rear end fab up with the rear rails so you guys can see what it will look like. Showed my Old Man today his answer was "You'll kill yourself", thats what ya want to hear  .

Exhaust fitted it need to be lifted at the back an inch, but the cats sit level with the lowest point of the chassis even though the pic doesn't show it cause of the angle the pic was taken......

I'll bolt as much on to the chassis before the crossmembers are added, the torque tube will run thru the centre of the crossmembers and the exhaust underneath.

01-12-2012, 06:27 AM
more mocking up today to see what the crossmembers have to clear etc.... You'll see the rear rails are now tappered in instead of out. Bad pic's but you'll get an idea that the frame will look close to stock in apperance.

I didn't know these trucks were so popular for major builds like this. Keep up the good work.

The "Crown Vic" or Panther front suspension swap is popular on the 67-72 trucks and many others. Also popular to swap the solid axle for a IRS from a T-Bird or Mark VIII. I did it a few years ago on my 72.

To the OP, I am surprised that you didnt do the CV swap, but with the work you have done so far, you are certainly setting the bar high. Do you think that this swap could have been done without having seperating the frame? Essentially you could have done this swap without the F-100 frame to begin with. Watching this swap with interest!

Thomo5150
01-12-2012, 12:16 PM
I'm in Australia so the CV parts would be the same as the Corvette to source.
I started doing this to another type of chassis, it ended up be considered by the Licencing Engineers an individual build because of the chassis mods. This is where the money pit started with torsion tests before and after the frame was modified. I fitted the ZR1 brakes to it and when the Engineer saw those he told me im not allowed to run them because I did not have ABS braking fitted. I sold the chassis to guy in another state who is finding it easier to get licenced.

SO WITH MY SPARE PARTS i STARTED THE f100.

Reading the law that my licencing state has with modified cars I found a loop hole on chassis mods. It says a chassis must not be cut at any point from the cab forward. The rear section is allowed to be modified, ie lengthed etc...

I asked my engineer about replacing crossmembers he said no welded crossmember where allowed to be removed. I asked what if they where bolted and riveted to the chassis? He said yes I can remove and replace them. I asked can I bolt another subframe / cradle between the chassis rails. He said yes.

I asked if I was allowed to modify the chassis behind the cab, he said yes as long as the chassis rails where boxed and strengthed where they have been cut.

So with there restrictions the F100 build has started. I'll be pushing the law with a hole in the chassis for the steering arms to run thru, the law says im not allowed to cut the chassis, nothing about punching a 4 inch hole thru it.

As you can see from the blueprints below im only changing the crossmembers on the chassis and doing a reverse Z on the rear rails bringing the rear rail width down from 37 odd inches to the Corvettes 32 inch rear cradle width. I need to make this chassis look stock so except for the crossmembers and boxing the chassis the original chassis profile will remain the same.

http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss183/thomo5150/F100/F100.gif

Sometimes you have to build cars to the law, Im not sure what its like in the USA it seems you guys have more freedom to make anythying. I'd luv to build a custom chassis like Roger, Ron, Garage Dog and others have done with the Corvette drivetrain but it would sit in the garage and never be driven. (Driving an illegal car in Western Australia, $1000 fine and they impound the car for a month) Sometimes you gotta comply with BIG BROTHER........

Sorry about the long answer I hope that explains what I am doing and why im doing it.

P.S With the firewall not needing to be modified I can now take my WHEELBARROW back to the hardware store and get my money back.:woot:

Sorry its a :lateral: joke..............

Not yet but its coming, in other parts of Australia your car is inspected once a year for licencing and they do noise checks, emission checks and look for illegal mods......

Lucky being the most isolated city in the World, Perth is a little slower to catch up on things.........:D

Body mods, this is where input from the forum guys is welcomed, good or bad. Some times you cant see the forest thru the trees so I'll welcome any comments on this major mod. I want to turn the F100 into a Unibody by welding the rear tub on and welding up the joining seem. To me it would give the Effy cleaner lines here is some pic's to help my case.

The unibody design is cool, I say with a frame and drive train that you have, you must do the unibody!
Good luck with the build!

The idea for the uni body is buy two LWB bed skins ( LMC Truck Parts - Page 21 (http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/fc/full.aspx?Page=21) ) and blend then weld them on from the door rear door jam. I'd fab a frame to hold the skins. So all im doing is making clean lines using the panels there would be no bed as such on the effy just the outer skins and tailgate hiding the frame and suspension. Kind of what they do on race trucks, the frame could be fabed to allow the tailgate to open, really its a neat way to cover up 345 tyres.

I missed that you are down under and it all makes sense now. Cant wait to see the final product. Unibody truck would be sweet and go right along with the rest of the build!

I like the unibody idea. That would make for a very smooth and clean look.

I had no idea you guys had such restrictions on vehicles down there. Holy crap is that a lot you have to deal with when doing builds. You should be applauded for just figuring out how build a legal truck, lol.

We make a aluminum dash insert for this year of F100. We can make it with 3,5 or 6 holes depending on what style of gauging you plan on using. Check it out in our catalog section of our web site at www.jbmicrofinish.com Thank you

This is what im aiming for, the lines aren't perfect but it gives a good idea.

With Ben doing the rendering I'll have something good to work with.

roof needs a chop and the rear quater behind the wheel needs to be shorterned.

OK body update some will like other won't so I'll live with it. This truck needs to be built now, photo shopping and wondering what to change wont get it built......

First point the 76 cab is getting 67-72 sheetmetal at the front and doors skin parts (ie: door handles) on it. The front grill design I prefer to the original 76 models.. When you look at the pic's remember to picture this 5 inches off the ground and with 275 tyres on the front.

Getting close to the ride height

This photoshop would be close, it still needs the side curves removed. The unibody and the fender joined and filled smooths the lines out. One thing that spoils the shape is the body gaps, in my design im removing as many as possiable. With only door gaps, bonnets gaps and tailgate gaps makes the look of the Effy a lot cleaner.

This truck covers most of the body mods, there will be no roof chop but the side curved panels on the 67-72 will be removed. Another mod is to weld the front fender on to the body removing the gap and only ending up with the bonnet panel gap, door gaps and tailgate gaps. The rear will be a unibody design using a LWB skin..... Trying in the design too smooth the F100's body lines out.

Final photoshop tweaks, now its time to hand it over to Ben to see what design ideas he can add. Chassis is on target to be a roller by the end of the month.
