Every time I post up pics of this car in the What's up at Ironworks thread everyone asks for a Build thread. So here it goes.
Darrell The owner of the car came in several years back and wanted us to help him with his 1967 Nova project. He was building the car at home with the usual parts and somewhere saw Johns 66 Nova. He lived about 3 hours from my shop and his work brought him to Bakersfield quite often. So he decided to make an appointment and stop in an see what we were doing here at the shop. He saw Johns Nova and loved it it but knew it was too much for him. While on one of his initial trips I believe he met Eric Turner who had been designing a tube chassis for his Nova. Talks were made to build 2 of the frames Eric had been thinking about for years.
SO fast forward 3 years and we have been chipping away at the car little by little. Darrell has worked with us on every detail. We have put a lot of thought and discussion into every angle of the car and what we intend to do. Darrell is looking to build a really nice Jaguar or high end luxury car inspired nova that will be a blast to drive with plenty of Horsepower and we even made room to haul a few bags of Golf clubs.
SO here we go, Here is what it looked like when we Darrell dropped the car off at the shop.

In these pics you can see how bad the metal was under the body that was on car when Darrell bought it. There was quite a bit of Bondo on the quaters and doors. So we reskinned the doors and quarters.

You can also see the body work that was done over RUST. OH My.

Chassis Construction - We built a tube chassis to hold corvette drivetrain and and LS engine. We also built the floor to hang down even with the rocker on the car and have a very strong sub structure to keep frame twist on such a narrow chassis to a minimum. We basically built the chassis to bolt to a very strong sub floor in the car.

Some more pics of the complete chassis with the LSA engine. There was a point in time we were going to machine 2 sets of control arms for this chassis and the Eric's. It was later agreed that building them from Tube fit the chassis design and styling of the project. We are currently building those now.

When the LSA engine became available. Darrel just had to have it and the required a change in the rack position since the firewall had already been built around the frame. We had no room to go back so we are redesigning the front suspension to allow for a lower rack position and clear the blower pulley on the front of the car.

Can we have some more details? It looks quite different than fitting a stock Corvette chassis. Start w control arms fabbed (maybe for narrow track width?) and thought behind the rear set up design.

It's a tube chassis we designed with Eric Turner as we also built one for under his 62 Nova car also. Lengthen torque tube, LSA engine, 6 speed transaxle, Custom built exhaust, all under a 67 Nova and pretty close to the same under Eric's 62 nova also.
It just fabrication. Anything beyond that your going to have to ask.
Darrell has been an awesome customer to work with and I'm just glad to see him blown away every time he sees the the car. He has spent more money then he ever thought and still gets up early to go work to earn the money to see this project through. I'm sure he gets out of bed a little quicker after seeing the project like he does every few weeks. Here is a picture from the time Jason was referring to a few posts ago when Darrell first saw the car on the ground for the first time a few months ago. He was pretty blown away to say the least.

Well I guess the cat is out of the bag. Yes I bought a 1976 Nova. Ironworks is building a hobby stock for the Bakersfield Speedway. I wanted to buy this exact car a few weeks ago, but I waited to long. I just could not get over the MIG welded rollcage and just descent fabrication, I need something a bit nicer.

My only plan is to drive the wheels off it at my local dirt track every Saturday night. I'm getting ready to build a 360 horse "Stock" small block, Gut everything out of the car, build a rollcage, install a 9" floater, with a Hughes Powerglide and go have some fun.

Sorry for letting the cat out! Man I got all excited thinking it was getting the pro touring treatment :willy: Either way it's nice to see people using these cars. They don't get any love. You think they would just do to the fact that they are Cheap but the lack of aftermarket parts doesn't help.
Keep us posted on the progress. O and drive it like ya stole it!

Figured I was a little late on the update for this project. But we have started on a custom hood idea Darrell had been dreaming about in slow motion.
Here is what we started with. Stock 2" cowl hood. It just was not doing for Darrel or I.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Darrels%20Top%20Secret/002.jpg
Then we brought in the 70 Chevelle project we are doing for Fairway Chevrolet in Las Vegas. Darrell was looking at the Chevelle parked next to it and thought man that hood would look awesome on this car. At first I thought Darrell was crazy, which he is....LOL.....LOL. But after some discussion about what it would take to actually pull this off well. It was decide to order a stock 70 Chevelle hood and cut it up. It was decided that it would be pretty cool to extend the hood all the way back to the windshield for a more modern car look and plus it would help with some or proportions we were not fully digging. So once we set the hood on this is what we have.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Darrels%20Top%20Secret/shoppics9-12-2012004.jpg
Of course the nose is really long but I did not link how far back the cowl bulge was. So knew shortening the nose would be a huge benefit. So we trimmed the nose off and built up the nose from poster board and painted it black.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Darrels%20Top%20Secret/shoppics9-26-2012013.jpg
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Darrels%20Top%20Secret/shoppics9-26-2012011.jpg
We then decided that the first step up on the hood was too thick and needed to be thinned up. which would take some of the big nose look at the front of the car. Plus we were worried the modified Ring Brother hinges for the 67 nova would possibly allow the hood to hit the windshield when opening the hood. That's probably not good. So we moved the bolts back in the under hood structure and gave it a shot.

Amazingly enough it didn't. But we will be reshaping the front of the doors and the back of the fender to have shape more like a 1st gen Camaro or Chevelle. So we are progressing on SLOWLY.

How close are the gaps side to side? The Chevelle looks so much wider than a Nova. Amazing it fits as good as it does out of the box. Will look slick without the cowl. Similar to the Pro Max Venom Nova's. Makes them them look much sleeker! Nice work!

Thanks Guys. All the credit goes to Darrell it was his idea. I kinda thought he was crazy at first. But as the first rule of business goes the customer is always right. Its starting to grow on me.
LOL :D :D :D :D
We worked on a bunch of ideas last week for front end mods. Moving the headlights up in with new billet bezels, making a grille that is similar to the new camaro, installing some Rigid Industries LED lights in the bumper for fog and turn signals. Plus we are working on some motorcycle mirrors for the outside.

Time for some kind of update on Darrell's nova. The hood looks awesome and is coming together nicely. We decided that the car needs some kind of spoiler on the rear to match. But we decided we needed to move the face of the trunk lid forward so it did not look so flat like you just backed into a brick wall.

Then we started working on some kind of spoiler, Not too big and not to hang over the taillights. I think we might lower it just a bit more and then figure out how to get things to flow between the taillights.

Here is a rough sketch we have been working off to get an idea for the grille.
Not quite there yet, but it is getting close. I hate license plate opening and exterior mirrors, but we have found some awesome mirrors with LED blinker in them. Now I just need to finish the bumper without a license plate recess.

Man, I love the look of that front end. I have been working on a nova in the same body style. I just came accross this and was blown away. Very cool stuff on this build. I am also putting corvette running gear under the one I am doing. My chassis design is similar to the way you did yours. As far as it being a drop out piece with the running gear. You guys do some very cool stuff!!!! I am also doing a lot of body mods as well. Including doing the hood back to windshield. I thought I was doing something "different". LOL

So how was Hawaii?
Hawaii was awesome. We did alot of Scuba diving before I ruptured my ear drum. Saw lots of cool stuff, rode scuba scooters and had a great time. We rode mountain bikes from the top of the Crater (10,023 ft) to a friend of mines house at about 3500 feet, this was on a dirt rode for 80% of the way. I did some paddle boarding and that is fun, but its like trying to stand a telephone pole of surf board. I did pretty good when your going with the waves but it gets shaky when your not. We ate some good food and had a great time hanging out with Greg and his family while they were there. After we made our reservations for the trip I mention to Greg we were going to Hawaii and he told me he was also. Come to find out it was the same island and our trips over lapped by like 8 or 10 days. I really had a great time on the whole trip. I would love to go again or go some place else. Bora Bora would sure be cool. I could post some pics but I don't want to Hijack this thread much further then usual.
You should ask Darrel the owner of this car about the concrete lions in from of the fancy place he stays at. Now that is big time.

I saw this chassis up close at the Pleasanton Good-guys show last year and it is awe inspiring. I spent way to much time talking to the Ironworks guys while I drooled all over it, and they were really proud of their work, as they should be!!:hail: :hail: :hail:
I'm blown away with the fabrication that is taking place to get it into the car around that amazing Corvette chassis. The BEST !!
I think about this car every time I work on my neighbor's 66 Nova, and his car is a bone stocker, that someone stuffed a 400 small block into, 3" exhaust thru glass-packs, mono springs, drum brakes all around, 3-speed manual, and dinky "pizza cutter" tires on 14" center lines.
This Ironworks car is the complete opposite of that car. I can only imagine what it will be like to drive this modern rendition of a classic. Unbelievable work!!

Really rough mock up of the the new tail panel or old trunk lid. The trunk has been modified to open like a Camaro. We leaned the tail panel forward to give the car a much more high speed look. We are working on the transition form the side of the taillights up to the upper trunk gap.

Sneaking up on the design. I think we are going to ad just a bit of curve to the panel. Then I need to figure out how or what we are going to put in the tail panel for to fill that broad flat spot. It looks too much like Nebraska currently.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Darrels%20Top%20Secret/3-13-2013014.jpg
Believe it or not the top of the rear bumper is not flat. So we did some surgery to flatten out the peak in the rear bumper. I think we will cut the tacks and narrow the bumper further.
