Ok well this was the car's first show (unfinished) but we are getting closer. Should be done by March or Very early April of this year. Not a lot of good photos, but you can see the new DSE billet hinges a bit better. Those things are rock solid, and completely kill any side to side movement the hood once had with normal hinges.

Looks good! What are you doing for a fuel tank...filler location???

mazspeed
02-15-2006, 11:39 PM
Thanks Tony. It's a Rick's stainless fuel tank, and the filler neck is being redone for the bend. The 67 bends a little more then the 69 does at the same location, so they have to weld a new piece on there to make that sharp transition. The filler location is the same as a 69 as the license plate frame folds back as it does on the 69. I wanted a cleaner look back there.

Some new shots from yesterday. The body is done finally, and now the interior and stance of the car needs to be played with and completed. The rear sits way too high. I'm also looking at other engine options. New front wheels were ordered with a different offset and wider.

The car looks great. I always like when people bring their "work in progress" to car shows. It's neat to see the progress of the build before it's finished. I think Stielow had the Mule at Woodward about a year before it was finished.

On a side note, I want to ask you about the Rhino Liner. How did you apply that? Did you spray it or roll it on? If so...where did you pick up the product and the device to apply it? Thanks.

Awesome car. '67's and '68's RULE!!! :D

Yeah, those were shakedown runs. I had to tell the shop what I liked and didn't like. I'm going to have them get a hydroboost unit. I'm not happy with the 7 inch vacuum pump at all. The front end is a mess, but that will be shimmed better and aligned, and the interor will be done for the show. I agve them an extra week to sort out the small issues with it. I can't wait to have it home.

Well I have an update on the car.
I went to pick the car up last night from Gearhead garage and was driving it home and on the freeway I lost the left rear wheel. I was doing about 65-70 when there was a violent shake and the wheel broke all 5 studs and left. I was able to maneuver it to the side of the road, but there will be no show for my car this weekend. Thankfully the cal track bars saved the car. It used them as a ski so I was able to fight the car where I wanted on the freeway, to the right side of the road. Damage. There is some small crack on the body inner fender wall. The cal track bar is destroyed, the Wheel is destroyed, and the left axel is destroyed. I called Jason since I was so close and he came out with his tow guys and his crew, got it loaded on the flat bed trailed and we took it back to the shop. The diagnoses was that there was gear grease on the wheel itself and there was a lot of play in the axel. It looks like it broke a bearing. I'm more then curious how this could have happened. I bought the rear-end from "biggearhead" on the camaro.net forums, and it came without axels pressed in. Jason wanted them shipped that way, and then Jason had them pressed in. How could this have happened? Does anyone have a clue of what might have gone wrong? I'm afraid to drive the thing at this point. I'm very lucky that’s, all that happened, I thought that I was going to take someone out, as the car was going out of control, but I got lucky. I just need to know what the hell happened?!

Hey Jonny I really appreciate that. Yeah I'm kind of looking for answers so if anyone has them, we will be sure to listen. This is also a credit to Jason. He was the first person I called and rounded the troops in really no time and came with a group of guys with parts and a wheel cart to get the car on the trailer in traffic. When we got back to the shop there were no less then 10 people trying to figure out what went wrong. In no way do I blame him, or really anybody for it, it's an accident that happened and as you say thank god no one was hurt. But I'm looking for answers as this should not have happened to a $2500 rear end set. I just can’t believe how little damage there was. He even told me they cold fix it that night and have gotten me to the show today, but I declined.

Thanks guys, the damage to the car is very minimal for going 65mph on the freeway and losing a wheel. It can be fixed in less then a day, but it's the parts that will take time. I have been e-mailing Johnny at baer, and the distributor that sold me the rear end and everyone has been great so far. I pretty much know what happened, but won't say till the rear is pulled and figured out for sure. The only thing I worry about is the boyd coddington smoothie wheels, but since they have been sold off, the wheels have came in a lot faster then they used too, so this is good news. I will keep everyone informed over the next few days on what happens. But after this wild ride, it's time for a cage. Also time for a light weight motor. I'm done screwing around with custom made parts! It's time to really open the wallet.

Thanks again guys
Mike

Mike, that's too bad about your little incident. The last time I've seen that is when my cousin had bad wheels on his old K5 Blazer. He'd usually lose two at a time. It would most likely be something to do with either the wheels or the studs themselves. Maybe the lugs weren't all the way seated or something? Can't tell without looking though. Glad to see it's gonna get fixed though.

Ouch, I am really sorry Mike. I have been following your car for a while now, and I know how bad it is when you are just about finished, and something goes wrong. One step forward, two steps back. Sucks that you can't make the Pleasanton show either, I sent my dad up there specifically to look at your car and take pics. Oh well, I'm sure he will find some other cars to keep him busy. Good luck with the repairs, and look on the bright side, at least you were safe and there was minimal damage.

Thanks guys. We should find out tomorrow what happened. I have talked to the distributor about this, and he and Jason and the team are going to find out what happened. I'm thinking it may have something to do with the custom made brake brackets that were on my 10 bolt, and then shifted to the 12 bolt Moser. Although we don't know yet.

Sorry about your car. At least you are ok. I looked for your car at the show this weekend...now I understand why I missed it. Keep us posted on the diagnosis. That is a scary thing to have happen. Man I am so sorry that happened to you. Very scary. You seem to have a good attitude about the whole thing. A front tire shot off of the driver side of the nova I had before the one I have now at 80 mph. The car fell onto its brake disk and came to a controlled stop on the side of the road. The tire shot across the street ( Luckily no on coming traffic) hit the curb and believe it or not shot so high in the air the wheel went over the power lines lining the street. I am very glad you only have $1000 in damage because I had images in my head of a dented quarter panel from the car falling on the tire.

Hey Mike any word on your car yet?

Oh yeah, they are taking care of everything.
The rear is being shipped to Byars performance in Ky to be fixed and assembled there tomorrow. The Boyd Wheels should be here this week. I'm hoping to get the rearend back by late next week. They are still working on what's left at this point till the rear gets back. I'm hoping by the time it comes back, that's all they will have to do to get it rolling again.

I want to give a huge thanks to Freddie Byars of Byars performance on the fast work he did in getting my rear end rebuilt and now shipped back to gearhead garage. He typically is in the camaro forums as Biggearhead, but I wanted to give the guy some love here. I should (hopefully) have the car shortly after that.

Hey Steve. I used Nissan 350Z silver on the stripes. I don't have the codes off hand, if you need them I can get them today?
Well I talked to the shop today, and the rearend should be there by tomorrow. It goes on, and then it gets to go to the interior shop for about a week while the new aircon lines go in and the rest of the interior and stereo system. The stereo is done, just waiting for the custom door panels to go on to cover them. The wiring is done. Everything else is done. It has to be aligned and tuned. I had an issue with steering and the brakes when the Hydroboost was installed. It would feel notchy as did the brakes so I think there has to be some air in the lines, but nothing can get done till the rearend goes back on. After that is done, the car goes back to the paint shop for the touch up under the wheel well when the wheel blew off. Other then that
They need to have it done by August 1st for Hot August nights in Reno.

Ok, all the problems on the car have been addressed. I should have the car by Septemtber 1st. That's the drop dead date. The only thing at this point that needs to be done is the custom interior, and the last of the AC hoses and it should be charged by tomorrow.

The car looks great! I went over to your webpage and kept saying to myself "yep, thats whats happening on my project". What started as a mild update of aging brakes, wiring etc. has no turned into a Wayne Due C5 equpped sub frame complete with Z06 6 piston calipers and rotors , a Hot Rods to Hell Truckarm Suspension out back, a 6.0 LS1 and the list goes on. The car is currently getting a full roll cage installed (thanks to my friends at Ballistic Trux in Rocklin, CA) this coming week to tie everything together.

I too was looking at your picks and was wondering what that was mounted to your firewall where the wiper motor would normally be. Is it an aftermarket wiper motor? Also, I talked to Pascual at Marquiz last week and asked him when the 67-68 door panels were coming out and he told me they were working on them now (there is a 5 degree difference on the dash angle from the 69) and should be available in late October. They are expensive and still need to be upholstered once you get them but they really look nice and might be worth a look.

I'm up in Foresthill behind Auburn. Maybe one of these days I'll see you at a local car gathering.

Hey Thanks.
Yeah it's always the small stuff that leads to the big builds. I went to a different direction with the interior then what Marquez was doing, just to be a little different. Ill post the photos soon. The aftermarket wiper motor is from DSE, and it's their 5 speed lay down model. Yeah, I'm sure Ill see you at a few car shows this coming year.

Yeah I'm glad but now I have to tune the front and rear suspension a bit, fix the horn, roll the rear fenders slightly, and tune the engine after 500miles to run leaner. The car is a blast to drive. Hey Charlie. The only thing that Moser, the shop and I could come up with was that the brake brackets were not counter bored for this new style rear-end. We think what happened was that there was too much friction with the bearing and it over heated and exploded in the housing. The other side was looking as if that was going to happen there as well. Moser took care of that problem, and Freddie Byers rebuilt the rear end for me. It seems fine now.

It works ok. I say only ok because you cannot fill it up past 7/8's. No fuel comes out on hard acceleration. It has a fuel door in the neck.

Ok new update. I got the car back from CARR yesterday and it drove great. One problem is that it looks like it slightly leans a little on the left side. Just ever so slightly. Also there is already an engine oil leak from the front, might be a bad crate engine as there is some internal balancing issues. Either a flywheel or the engine is not balanced correctly.

It doesn't appear that my Chevelle gaskets work very well with the profile of the 67-8 camaro doors...I know they fit better on the 69's. And yes I have already reshaped the mirror base to fit the door. Thanks!!

Hey Anthony. The sound system sounds really good. We used nothing but Alpine and it seems to work really well. I'm not sure what gaskets they used in the mirrors, but I do know they had to be shimmed a bit.

I kind of doubt it right now. I'm having it torn down to look for the balancing problem. If it's the motor I'm having it rebuilt the way I want it with a supercharger in mind. Unless it's a flywheel problem, it will be down for at least a few weeks. If it's only the flywheel, then I should make it.

Yeah me too. Id like more power so I might get creative.
On another note I took the wife and the car to Santa Cruz this weekend driving over 17 and on to 101. It was perfect. The car other then the small vibration was great. It handled much better then I thought, I need some minor suspension adjustments but other then that it was a blast.

mazspeed
10-10-2006, 11:48 AM
Funny thing happened on the way to the shop this morning. The left front shock tower came apart and the car hit the ground right down the street from Campbell Auto. I was bringing it in to figure out the vibration issues, when the left front tire started rubbing, then collapsed into the ground. No damage, but I think we are going to look at aftermarket coilovers for this thing. I cannot trust anything fatman has right now. The top of the coilover looks like it came apart as it only has about 5 turns of the thread and for some reason it came off. Bad design.

I didn't take pics at the side of the road, no camera. Right now they are calling Koni and bilstein to see if they have or will make a custom coilover to fit this setup. This will actually be an improvement over what came with it anyways so this is for the better.

Not suprised, when I found out you had the fatman frame I kinda winced, but didn't want to rain on your parade. I installed a set of their lower/upper control arms on a first gen and the uppers had no bump stops and no suspension gains. The lowers were not made correctly and the plate that held the lower spring bent and threw off everything. They of course sent us new revised versions which were better, but I still had to charge the guy to swap them out. Good luck with the rebuilds

Yeah mine didn't come with bump stops either but the custom Koni's have them built in to the shock/spring. We are going to see how that works before they fab some up. The arms are not too bad, and they seem to be pretty tough, and the geometry is not bad for a M2. But the stuff they are doing will improve this whole thing. The stock springs and shocks are trash though. The frame itself from what I understand is pretty stiff, much stiffer then a Martz. Will see how it goes. It should be pretty fast and stiff once it's done. Frank from Prodigy Customs is helping with the design and parts for the procharger on my car. I want to thank him for the effort and time as well. Ill give you all the info on everything later once the kit and fab work is finalized.

Ok, finally something happining. The supercharger came in today as did the GPS snitch. That thing is pretty cool. The car goes in next week and they have all the parts, and it's just a matter of time to bolt everything together at this point. It's going to be real tough to make the Goodguys in San Diego, but they are going to try and get everything finished for that show. I hope. Thanks again Frank for the parts.
