It seems to me that there are alot of "wealthy" people on Lat-G.
I want to know the range of wealth on lat g.

You do not have to comment so that you can remain anonymous, just take the poll.

If you would like let us know what you do for a living.

It depends on your definition of wealthy; everyone's is different. I don't think there's a lot of millionaires on this site. We'll see how this goes.

I don't make anywhere near a 10th of a million.

Perceptions, perceptions!!!

You know I was just thinking that there are alot of guys on here recently with builds with Nelson Racing Engines going in them and we all know you have to be a baller to buy one of those. I was like..."dang, where are these guys getting this money for an engine for $20k+ and still have to build the car."

My guess is that even though it is anonymous, guys to the higher end of the scale will be less likely to respond to the survey. I thought twice, and I am nowhere near the high end.

I've started to see some posts and comments in regards to envy on multiple websites. It really pisses me off. Every American is born with the same opportunity to live a free life and make their own decisions. You've got a nicer car than me so some how you got the long end of the stick in life. Maybe he went out and WORKED for it? Made it happen for himself? Took a risk? Made his own luck? I can guarantee he didn't sit around with his tail between his legs and cry that sombody else has it better.....

^This. I see this especially as a union member, like somehow because I have a pension I am the scum of the earth. Its a race to the bottom.

We all have the same opportunity. Properly motivated there is almost no limit to your earning potential.

Wrong thread my friend.

I always wonder what some people here do for a living, but never had I thought to ask what they make because honestly, it's none of my business.

In any case, cars are the ultimate ice breaker. As my dad says, "I don't have a pot to piss in, but when you talk to a guy about his Saleen S7, he doesn't give a dam. He just wants to talk cars."

I think it also needs to be said that it doesn't require you to be"wealthy" to have a badass car. There are many ways to do It, other than winning the lottery.

I've got plenty of friends that make more money than me and more that make less. Who cares! I've always believed it's not how much you make, but what you do with it.

Seemed to me that the guy that started this thread was innocently asking what people did for a living. I didn't take any offense to that. Apparently there are a lot of sensitive people on here. If you don't want to say, then don't. I don't see the need to get upset about it. If you're so offended by the question, go to another post. Relax. BTW, I'm much closer to the lower end of that poll as i am a union worker.

You may be right, you may be wrong. It sparked due to some of the other posts I've seen lately on multiple websites and in magazine letters. Whether it's his motivation or not, I felt it was relevant to this website and hope those with negative attitudes will take it somewhere else. We don't care what you have or what you are building. Share your knowledge, bring it out to an event and tear it up. That's where you'll gain respect and friends.

By the way, I hadn't listened to the Corolla interview BEFORE I made my post.

The first thing the OP did was make an ASSumption. That set the tone for the whole thread.

"It seems to me that there are alot of "wealthy" people on Lat-G."

I'm still waiting for his explanation of wealth.

I'm a regular blue collar, hourly wage earner just like the vast majority of the members of this site. I'm on-call for 3,300 hours per year beyond the 2,000 hours a year I work (24/7, every other week). I apply my skill set to do side jobs to help offset costs of car parts.

I think this poll brings to light the fact that our hobby brings together people with a common love for cars. It doesn't matter if you work overtime and bust your ass to put together a home built street car or write a check to fill your garage with pro built dream cars. Not sure you can say the same for too many other hobbies. Build it, buy it, drive it, race it or show it....whatever makes you happy!

Seems like most are taking this a bit personal and this guy pushed some buttons that pissed a few off. I dont take questions like this personally especially from people I dont know and I cant comment on what type of person this OP is because I dont know him/her. Is the OP a jealous person? Who knows. My assumption is that the OP is still a young grasshopper if you will.

To the OP: Its none of your business and not tactful to ask what other people make and what they do for a living especially when you dont know them.

To assume people have alot of money just by looking at the cars on this particular site was wrong. There are alot of folks here that spend countless years building their dream car. Within those years freinds are made. You trade favors, help each other out, and if you are an honest, hard working person, and continue this cycle reaching your goals will be easier and very rewarding.

Remember, yes the destination in this hobby is rewarding, but it's the journey that makes it fun.

I personally have no problem with the direction of this thread. I understand the feelings here, asking someone what they make is considered rude normally. However, this is a message board, it's anonymous, and not face to face, so it's quite different.

That sentiment is certainly always true on this website that's for sure.... There's lots and lots of friends here.... We bust each others balls if at all possible... we share our dreams... we share our time... we share our love of all things automotive...we share when we have newborns... or when our pets pass...

I've never asked anyone if they have a house - a car - or food to eat... And I try the best I can to help with issues or skills or tools knowledge... or parts or whatever. It's never occurred to me to ask ahead of time if they're wealthy OR not.... I don't give a shizzel...

It seems to me that this thread is not for everyone. If someone does not like it then you do not have to participate. I personally like it. I am curious to know the income range of folks with the same interest as me... simple curiosity, thats all. Maybe that's all the OP has as well... Pilot as well here... I didnt see the box "might as well do it for love/the odd food scrap" either lol. Cracks me up how people assume airline pilots must earn mega $$$. It's about waking up in the morning and looking forward to your day.

Income and wealth are two entirely different things. Its not about how much you earn, it's how much you keep. Personally dunno why you would ask, or for that matter care if someone else did.

Sorry to all of those that i offended by creating this thread. I seen it going in a differnent direction.

I honestly could care less what people make. I asked that mearly out of curiosity to see what the average income of the pro-touring community is. I did not mean it as a personal question. That is why i was tring to keep it annonymous.

I was hoping that the thread would have went more in the direction of disscussing what we all do for a living. Me personally, I am a Vice President of a commercial roofing company. Thats all i was looking for. I did not want to know what you did for a living and how much money you make at that occupation.

No need to apologize, at least those are my thoughts. I notice there are 73 posts on this thread but over 135 people responded to the survey. Obviously you did not offend everyone. Some people knew it was just a simple question out of curiousity. Anyway, hope it doesn't keep you from coming back to this site.

Sorry to all the trouble I caused and to all I have offended.

(sorry also if i mis-spell words, i cant get my spell check to work.)

I was curious and I'm not afraid to admit it, unlike several others. I mean not on a personal level. I'm saying from a car standpoint, because I do get curious about what a guy does for a living when he buys a $35k NRE engine and finishes with a $400k car like a Ring Brothers build or the owner of the InNOVAtor that just won SMOTY. That doesn't mean that I'm so darn nosey that I want to know down to the exact dollar amount he makes and what he pays in taxes. I just assume a guy doesn't have a normal job or income when he builds a car on that level...that's all. Just curious to know in general if he's a doctor, lawyer, biochemist, etc. For that matter we all know what it takes to build a car. Hell, it takes years on normal salaries. Therefore, to build a $400k car in a year, a guy more than likely has a nice job. No more to it than that. Gollee guys c'mon!!

What even irks me more is...and this is just my opinion, is that if one of the more popular, bigger named guys on this site (and we all know who they are)would have thought of this many would have said nothing or at least kept their comments to themselves. But, a lesser known guy and newer member like the OP started it and he gets jumped.

It seems to me that this thread is not for everyone. If someone does not like it then you do not have to participate. I personally like it. I am curious to know the income range of folks with the same interest as me... simple curiosity, thats all. Maybe that's all the OP has as well... The thread is anonymous... i don't think its intended to be negative or to harm anyone's reputation.

True that everyone will view the question differently and I understand that. The one thing I really like about our group is that income has never been a factor when it comes to enjoying our mutual addiction/love of cars. The question was intended to be harmless, but what will others think? I for one always try to look out for rabbit holes and it concerns me that if people (lurkers) get the impression that the majority in our group make more than the average that scams and rip offs will increase. We've seen enough of those.

Its nice that here on LG we are all equal.

I hear you! Had I known about the lack of pay I might have made aviation a hobby. I get a kick how everyone assumes all the destinations are fun filled resort style adventures.

Back in my Freight Dog days, I flew with a guy from your neck of woods. Climbing the ladder there is a bit more of a challenge from what I've heard.

This entire conversation strikes a funny bone for me personally... and I'll tell you why.

Charley and I are at Thunderhill Raceway... and when I'm pulling out of there on Sunday afternoon... I drive past a bunch of big azz motorhomes with stackers and there's GT40's inside - and dedicated "real" race cars... and Panoz...and well - you get the picture. I'm in my 2006 Ford Dually - towing a 24' single car hauler... and I'm thinking (asking myself). Holy crap! I wonder WTF those guys do for a living?!?!

That was my point exactly. Panoz Roadster, GT40's, etc. We all know what they cost. So, that would be equivalent to my thinking of, "...dang, what does a guy do for a living to be able to afford a $25k LS9?" Many of us have two cars that don't equal $25k, yet alone just the motor.

GregWeld

Jim --

The big problem "stems" from -- your house wasn't worth what it was "worth" at the top either... :D Not saying your house in particular... but houses in general.

And then -- many of the cars that were built -- or that were in the works -- were being built with money borrowed against that "worth"... which is now worthless... and the car that was "worth" 200K on Barrett Jackass is now also "worthless" (worth less is almost worthless).... so double whammy....

Which brings us to "averages"... on average - houses went up about 3% a year... UNTIL they went up 25% a year for two or three years... which now has to go down just as much until we get back to those "averages". It sucks - because it was so much fun for people to feel good about everything they touched doubling in value every year... :D

The car market was our first clue into the senselessness of the "over inflated" world... when we watched dumbasses bid up CLONE/COPIES/PHONY cars on Barrett Jackass to 150 and 200K...

Was fun meeting you at SEMA at our Lat G get together!

ha ha ha too funny!

I'm a CPA and so of course just like the nerdy reputations we have I have tracked every penny that has gone into every car I've owned since I got my first car at 17. And all that data is in Quicken and so I can slice and dice it many ways. Lets just say that I'd have a whole lot more "wealth" if I never got so into cars.

Personally, I have nothing against this thread given that its anon. I clicked on it because I was curious too :)

Am I wealthy? Hells yeah! I have a great wife that supports my hobby, a large heated shop, a growing list of basic tools, and a few friends who actually know what they are doing to help me out (some of them even think I know what I'm doing...)

Who here has laid on a cold wet driveway in the middle of the night replacing a header cooked starter so you could be at work in a few hours? Who has run tires so bad you could see the air in them for a month until you could afford somebody elses take-offs?

Nearly 30% of the survey respondents say they make between $100K - $250K plus whatever spousal income they have. I would have assumed this given the level and quality of builds on this site. What's really interesting is that everyone is claiming not be be a millionaire. I mean come on, if you're making $250K a year and you don't have 1M+ in net worth, how in the heck are you going to retire? Are you going to live in your $100K Camaro? : )

I think a more interesting question would be what percentage of your net worth are you comfortable investing in a car?

In order to be considered to be a "real millionaire".... you need to have TWENTY MILLION in investable cash NOT including your house....

One million dollars invested in a laddered bond portfolio will net you a whopping $40K per year (tax free net).

The point of having a 30 year mortgage on a house - is that if you bought a house when you are between 30 & 35 years old - you'd have it paid off by the time your retired. Today however... everyone has forgotten that they have a 30 year mortgage and they're already 45 years old... GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!

A common thing with people is that they rarely feel rich. Here's an article based on a study of pure millionaires, aka people who have over a million dollars in investments.

http://blogs.wsj.com/wealth/2011/03/14/millionaires-need-7-5-million-to-feel-wealthy/

42% didn't feel wealthy even with an average net worth of 3.5 million dollars.

It's very easy to see the next guy who makes more than you do, has a nicer house, or more applicable a nicer car and feel like you aren't rich.

Anyways, to answer your question. Based on my current income level, the fact my car took 4 years by the time it's done sometime next year to be done, I will have spent probably around 6-8% per year on average doing all of the work myself, and having changed directions which cost me some money. I am in the lower middle part of the 30% you point out.

It's about equivilent to financing a 35k car over 4 years, and only getting the car when it's completely paid off.

I posted a comment here or in the "millionair" (SIC) thread.... that I was driving by a group of big azz motorhomes and stacker trailers with real race cars in them and I was thinking to myself -- WTF do those guys do for a living? And this is EXACTLY what I'm talking about. It takes a GIANT pile of money to be a "real millionaire".... for me - that description would be someone with Mansions (more than one) - private jet - a real Yacht - domestic help.... and be able to buy "anything" they wanted. At a 100K per month - you'd be just about there... but that would most likely be reduced by taxes of say 30% -- so you'd really need a pre-tax income more like 1.5MM a year! That would take THIRTY MILLION earning 5% income.

No wonder I feel poor!

Interesting topic, but I don't see the reason why some people get bent out of shape about discussing this topic. I grew up broke, and always tried to learn from those that had achieved some level of success. I'm still learning. I also share what I've learned along the way, to those interested in doing something with the information. To the casual commenter that just makes some sort of wiseguy remark, stereotyping others for having nicer toys as not having earned it, I don't have time for those people. Like Stuart said, those people have a "me" problem with themselves. I know numerous people from all income levels that are 100% content with their lifestyles, nothing wrong with that. I've always had pride and have always been driven, no matter what my current paycheck at the time stated. That drive, ambition, and action is what the haters lack. It is much easier to sit back, be lazy, and criticize and be envious, instead of getting off your ass and doing what it takes to reach a desired level of financial success.

Also, Greg's statement about net worth vs annual income are pretty damn accurate. Having a 7+ figure net worth doesn't make someone live some sort of extravagant lifestyle, jet setting across the globe, having 20 exotic cars, and multiple mansions. Those guys have the 9+ figure net worth nowadays. I'd love to get there someday.

Very well said 9Ball.

My family immigrated to Canada from Ireland back in the 60's and I was raised in the school of hard knocks. Nothing gifted or handed down, I worked for everything I wanted whether it was a bike or a skateboard. I bought my first mini bike (Z50) with money I saved at the age of 10, and purchased my first motocross bike at 12 yrs old with money earned from working on a friends farm in the summers.

I remember those years very well and the values and lessons learned in knowing it took hard work to get what I wanted were forged at a very young age. Today I operate a successful company that I started 6 years ago, and have never looked back. I have prospered in tough times, have always turned black ink, and 2011 will go down with record sales that will be tough to duplicate. Why you may ask? Because I work hard for what I want, and I know that success is ALWAYS parked right around the corner.

Hard work and perseverance are what drive me to be successful. I know I can succeed in being whatever I want to be. I am well on my way to being there!

No, I'm not what I would call a millionaire, but I have net worth, great friends, and an income that supports my growing family (and my car hobby). I'm all good!

great thought! You don't have to answer, but if you don't mind what does your company do? I'm always interested in what types of businesses are prospering in today's economy.

Good post Nine!

I said earlier -- or maybe in the OWS thread... that what really scares me the most is that people don't have enough savings for retirement. The reason that scares me is because I know what it costs to live and how much it takes to earn enough off of your "savings". Todd said it very well - that it's not how much you make - but how much you spend. That's very true. But there are basic living costs that everybody has... and these take real cash to pay.

If you need 50K to pay your bills now (4K per month) - that will take 60K or more with inflation. Property taxes keep rising etc. To "take home" 60K - a guy might get 2K (maximum) from Social Security.... Now you have to make another 36K after taxes... and that takes just short of one million bucks.

You really can't just sell your house and move somewhere cheaper... it just doesn't work like that. You'll have grandkids and friends - and it's where you've lived for "X" years etc. So that "asset" really isn't available to live on. Plus - most will need to sell their house later when they're needing assisted living etc (it cost me over 500K to support my mother for 4 years... Since I owned the house outright - I sold it for 204K and used that up first). That equity needs to be the court of last resort.

I think what Nine - and I - have been saying is that all this "millionaire" talk is nice if you're looking up from the bottom... it looks like OMG that guy is rich... but in reality -- you have to have a "few" million just to be "comfortable" - a "bunch" to be "rich" - and a gazillion to be the kind of millionaire that people dream about (including the guy that is comfortable and the "rich" guy!). And oh hell yeah life is "easier" when you have some dough but you have to be HAPPY first. Even the Ten Commandments makes a statement about coveting the other guys stuff...

And here's what Nine was saying - it's what makes the difference... I have a personal trainer. While working out - we discuss life etc. He is now invested in some stocks - 10K worth that he'd saved up that was "sitting" in CD's earning zippola. We'd sit and watch CNBC - next thing he's asking about why/what/how - what did I do with this or that and what they were talking about and what it meant...HE TOOK INTEREST on his own! Then asked me for "help" selecting etc. Then he took action and now owns some dividend paying stocks. Now we're working on some ideas that could really be a hit (or not). They're HIS ideas - we're just bouncing around the add ons and the possibilities of marketing etc. My point is... that he hasn't stopped at just being a PT... he's always thinking about "the next thing" - a move up - how to work a little more and what it takes to be an achiever. He's not sitting around being static.. he's active in his own success.

I design toys for a living. I enjoy it, but working for someone else isn't going to make me independently wealthy. Especially since I spend all my free coin on my car.

It seems to me that there are alot of "healthy" people on this forum.
I want to know how long you last during love making with your spouse.

You do not have to comment so that you can remain anonymous, just take the poll.

If you would like, let us know what you do for a living in order to prolong your stamina.

I was brought up on the work hard, get good grades and work hard at a good career and one will prosper mentality. Then an accountant friend suggested I read Robert Kiyosaki's Rich Dad Poor Dad and boy did my mind set change!

Working alongside guys all on six figure salaries it became apparent that some were doing extremely well while others on the identical pay scale lived pay check to pay check.

Doing some digging revealed that the ones doing well made their dollars work for them as opposed to being a slave to it. I'm glad this change of mind-set occured in my early 20's as now in my late 20's having read countless titles on investment and personal development (and continuing to do so), through applying the principles learned I no longer have to rely on the 9-5 for my crust.

It's like someone mentioned earlier about their PT. It's funny how some will snigger with envy and ask "why not me?" meanwhile the clever ones ask "how can I?"

In the past few generations what it takes to be wealthy has changed drastically, I do believe in working hard to a point, but working smarter is much better :)

Marry your high school sweetheart - stay together for 40 years - buy a color tv with a remote for the bedroom. You won't have to worry about such things.

#1 rule I tell my kids.... You can't spend your way to wealth.

In other words - carrying around a Gucci purse won't make you wealthy. Buy some stock - or SAVE some money - and you can buy 100 Gucci purses when you ARE truly wealthy. Driving around in a leased BMW won't get you there.

Interesting comments here and some good lessons for those that are willing to learn them. My perspective, while perhaps a little unsympathetic to some of the complaints of the 99%(of which I have been a member for much of my life), is merely a product of my own life experiences. I grew up very poor, moved out on my own in my senior year of high school and built up my business from scratch several times from the age of 18. My business was cut in half in 2001 from 9-11. I completely changed my business and through hard work built it back up. The housing industry collapse reduced my income by 80% in 2008. Again through hard work and changing my product lines I built my business up again and am on track to match my best year. The reason I mention this is that as someone who has been in the 1% several times and suffered huge hits, I firmly believe "luck" is the culmination of many good decisions.
If I had not sold our homes in 2007(it was apparent we would see a correction), lived well below my means, and been completely debt free(again, making your own luck) I likely would have gone through bankruptcy and at the very least my business would not have flourished again. As others have said, get debt free, build up at least a six month cushion in your savings, live below your means and you will have the necessary foundation to build your own wealth. If you don't have the basics covered being a millionaire is a short lived thing.

Good book. I recommend everyone read it. Many of the thoughts and perspectives I read in that book, I already had. It was refreshing to see that others had the same big picture view of things, and that I wasn't crazy.

Same here Jeff. I'm not ashamed either. My wife is the bread winner too. If it wasn't for her, I wouldn't have diddley squat. I am alot better with my money because of her.

I made a ton early (mid 70's and early 80's) - then retired to raise kids while Gwen worked - I ran the investments and did way better than she did working - but regardless of where the money comes from - WE have had a nice life... When you're MARRIED it really doesn't matter where the money comes from - it's what you do with it in the long run that matters.

I can guarantee he didn't sit around with his tail between his legs and cry that sombody else has it better.....

i see your point and there are some hard working motivated people out there but for some reason the majoraty of wealthy people i know are not them i know lots of people that are trust funders!!! i do not know many self made millionaires that did it all on there own!! i know a couple that are rich and made it but daddys money got them started in the beginning
