Chris at WCAC has replaced the carb cam spring on the accelerator pump and rejetted it. After some fine tuning she is running even better.
He said it looks like the shop that built the motor just slapped the Quickfuel carb on there right out of the box. It has the stock jets (50s and 65s). He is trying 65s & 80s to see how those work. They also had the timing at 32* whith really tight spring which he feels was too conservative for this cam / heads set up. Chris thinks there is more he can get out of the motor which is great. Out of the box it dynoed 470 / 517 so more is mo better
He went to take it for a drive yesterday and one of the power steering hoses blew. :bang:
Ordered a new one along with a new fuel sending unit since it isn't reading. Maiden voyage should be later today giving him a chance to identify any bugs, season the brakes and play with the jetting some more.
Plan on heading up Friday to take her for a rip. :drive:

Another crappy cell phone video but am too excited not to share. It is soooo good to see her moving under her own power.
I think the videos are being shot with a 1 megapixel Nokia flip phone. Tomorrow I will get better pics.
It may be a strategy of theirs to just share blurry videos so you can't make out all the details

I sure hope so because they are going to have to pry me out of there once I get in it.

Thanks guys.
No ride today. The car went to the alignment shop yesterday and when Chris was raising the car to drive up on the rack the ECU/controller died.
Kim from Matt's, where I got all my RideTech stuff, called RT and we will have a new ECU/Controller and cable sent out on Monday. Even though the kit was bought in early 2010 there was no problem getting the new stuff sent out.
Gotta love that.

Thanks John. Yeah I really like the way the Borlas sound. Chris says it sounds way better on person... And loud.
I'm sure your Spintechs will sound awesome with that motor of yours.
Once the bugs are worked out on mine it's coming home then it's all hands on yours getting it done for West Coast Nats.

Headed up to the shop today, finally, so I could check her out in person.
They got the new Ridetech controller and cable installed and it is working great now.
After killing me with some idle chatter, intentionally making me wait while they bolted in the drivers seat, they fired her up. All I can say is holy sh*t. Man was it great to hear her again and boy is she LOUD. I mean LOUD. These Borla XR-1's are way louder then my Flowmaster Super 44's. Sounds like a race car :) The videos dont even come close to what it sounds like in person. With the AirBar and Shockwaves we had to dump right after the muffler which makes a huge difference. And with the tuning Chris did it just feels and sounds like a totally different motor.
My wife is going to hate it  Sorry honey :mock:
We jumped in for a drive with Chris at the wheel, to reintroduce me to her, and he put her through the gears a few times. Damn was it a great ride. Pulls real hard and just screams when he punched it.
We had a a little problem with the cam spring on the carb sticking so we pulled over about a mile away to play with it, got back in and noticed she was already getting hot because the fan wasnt kicking on. We headed back to the shop and found the ground was loose.
Unfortunately I had to run and so did they so that was all... but damn was that fun. I was smiling ear to ear... and still am writing about it.
I was so damn excited I forgot to take any pic/video. Next week....

Thanks Doug... I appreciate the kind words. The guys up at WCAC have gone above and beyond exceeding my expectations. It took Chris a while to convince me one the front end but once I saw the rendering I was in.

Chris sent the carb back to Quickfuel on Friday for a freshen up. We were still having issues with the needle sticking in the seat causing a little hesitation/stumble. Can't have that.

We still need to get those SoCal guys up here for a cruise too and stuff them full of Mtn Mikes pizza.
Last week Joe said he will be full time on your car starting this week. All my wiring is done. They installed the stereo system Friday. Chris said it kicks ass... not that I will be able to hear it. There is just some little stuff left to dial in (get the carb back, alignment, charge AC, etc.) so now its on to yours they said.

Thanks - yeah it's come a long way. As with most projects it has evolved along the way. The end is near and I can't wait.
We hit a bump recently- had issues with the Quckfuel carb and had to send it back. What should of taken 3-4 days took a week an a half. Got it back today so we are back at it.
Congrats on getting it on the road..now get it dirty and go thru a set of tires quick...
Baring any unforeseen issues we will have it delivered Friday for the Napa show this weekend. Will also have it inside the big hall at next weeks West Coast Nats.
Yeah I can see a new set of tires in the not too distant future. The speedo says 7 miles but the rear tires have burned off a few thousand already. She's being broken in right. (Insert posi imodicon)

Oh the drama of it all...
Well as I mentioned we have the home town show here in Napa this weekend. Friday night is a cruise in (band, food and drink) then Saturday is the show downtown. I've been pushing to have the car done and there since Autorama in Feb. Over the last couple months I have rallied 6 buddies to bring their cars so really dont want to miss it plus all the friend want to check it out.
Everything was on track with time to spare until the Quickfuel issues 2 weeks ago. Sent the carb back for what was to be a 1-2 day fix then overnight it back. They ended up having to put a new body on it basically a new carb now) but the moron sends it back ground. 5 days later (this Monday) it shows up. All the jetting and adjustments are gone so it all to be redone. Chris knocked that out yesterday and got it all dialed in. Little stumble/hesitation is gone so far.
But on Friday the Ridetech control unit goes dead. This is the 2nd unit and cable we had sent to us 3 weeks ago. After some trouble shooting they determine its the cable again. Requested a new one to be overnighted and it arrived today. This is the 3rd cable now so we are good to go. Having already torn out the interior earlier this week they were ready to put it back in after installing the new cable. Then the controller goes dark this evening and wont power up. WTF!!!! Chris calls me and says its dead. I'm SOL
So I'm thinking, call them at 5 am tomorrow and beg them to send out a new one overnight so it gets here Friday morning, install, troubleshoot and re-install the interior. UGH. My hopes of having it here are slipping away. Time for a few beers.
I just got a call from Chris, they are still at the shop working on the cars for next weeks GG West Coast Nats, and he says "we got it working". Holy hell... there is hope. After a few hours of trouble shooting they determined the remote key fob pig tail that goes between the ECU and the controller isn't working. They unplugged and wala working good so far.
Tomorrow morning she goes off to get aligned and some more break in time... Fingers crossed nothing else pops up and we are a go. :excited:

Hope you get 'er done. I just saw Bruce Cohn at Deuce Days in Victoria... (B R Cohn Winery) -- hope he brings his sweet little '33 Willys to the show. He's a great guy and a good hot rodder - if you don't know him - introduce yourself. You'd like him.

Update... Looks like we are on track... Chris took her to get aligned and the AC charged. About a block away from the alignment shop she dies...no spark.... Find out one of the wires on the distributor got pinched by the hold down. Easy fix.
After some more shake out driving she dies again... No fuel. Find out its a bad fuel pump relay. Easy fix.
Tonight there are issues getting it into reverse. Seems to be some binding with the Muncie linkage or the shifter.
Oh, and anyone ever had this issue, I have all new deluxe OER window regulators and none of the window cranks will fit. They have tried 4 different sets and none will go on. Seems that the splines are off. Anyone have a suggestion?
Greg, it's like you said, it's all part of hot rodding and dialing in the build. Better to happen now then after I get her home.
We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Sorry Jeff couldn't resist! Just put the windows down and you will be good.
I've tried some of the aftermarket window regs in the past :warning: their junk as far as I'm concerned. I alway try to reuse the org or hit eBay to find a set of orgs?? Now with you using the deluxe ones that can be a little tougher.
GregWeld
08-16-2013, 06:56 AM
Polish up some mid-sized vice grips for the window cranks! You'll start a new trend....
OMG! Sorry to hear of these issues! But like you said -- at least it's happening while still at the shop. Unlike the azz hollio shop that built my '32 Ford and handed it to me to head for a show in Santa Barbara, California.... where it wouldn't run - finally did after I fixed that - only to die on the freeway - to ride on a rollback - with fluids dripping from everything that held fluids and no brake lights -- and on and on and on.
I wasn't really pissed until the idiots charged me to paint the taillight housings "WHITE" because the reason the lights didn't work was because we just couldn't see them... Then I was ready to go "postal".
I've never heard of the window crank issue.... and that sounds like maybe they need to try a different crank.... maybe a Ford or Mopar part -- at least to get you to the show?

Man, it's so typical isn't it? You buy the best parts, and somehow they still find a way to fail. Makes me wonder how the OEM's ever get a car to run and be dependable for 100k miles when stuff like this happens. A key fob? The relay? How come that rarely happens on production cars? In the words of my daughter "Me not know"--but it sure is frustrating. Keep going brother, you will beat them all ---continue to be tenacious and you will win these mini battles that seem like a war right now. You are so close!
D
Jeff - The car looks and sounds exceptional!!! What Borla muffler are you using?

So the cruise in starts at 5:00 last night. I talk to Chris at 2:00 to see how things are going since he's an hour and a half away. Says he washing it and ready to go. Get a call at 3:30... It's spewing gas from the tank, major fuel leak.
Well the night before the gas gauge goes dead so they trace it to the sending unit. Drop the tank and realize the wire on the sending unit got rubbed through between the tank and undercoating so shorted out. Easy fix.... Well when they put the sending unit back in the gasket slipped and after fueling up yesterday once pressure in the take rose it started spitting fuel out.
Chris says he has 4 guys on it. once done he is ready to go...ugh. Here we go. I head down to the show with the crew and don't hear from him for a couple hours which gets me thinking it's not going to happen.
I get a call at 5:00... "Where am I going, almost there". Not only did he make it, he drove it the 80 miles from the shop to Napa! Crazy, brave, I don't know... What ever, but it was a grand entrance showing up about an hour late and rolling in with a full crowd.
Was awesome to see her come cruising in. Chris had a trunk full of spare parts just in case. What a great night.
I got to drive her home which was awesome. Getting ready to head out to the show in a bit.

John - was more of a sleep over. She spent the nigh in my garage then went back to Cloverdale last night in preparation for West Coast Nats. It was awesome getting to drive her to and from the show though.
Chris headed out for the 80 mile trip back about 4. Around 4:20 my cell rings. Guess who? He tells me he stopped for gas and was leaving for the highway when she died. Thankfully he was still in town so I shot down and with the help of a couple car guys we pushed her back into the parking lot. The Holley blue pump died. Chris' wife went to the shop, grabbed the hauler and came to pick up the car.

I talked to Chris earlier this evening to check in and see how the 2.5 hour drive from Cloverdale to Pleasanton was. Besides him loosing some hearing he said my car ran great, no problems, acted fine in stop and go traffic and only took just under 2 tanks of gas to get there. (125 miles) :bang:

Thanks guys. Appreciate it. The award was a great surprise. Chris and the team at WCAC have done a great job with my car. It's been a long road but I cant say enough about how they have really come through over the past few months getting her to where she is today. Exceeded expectation!
When Chris and I talked about how he had always wanted to do what he did to my car I was a little hesitant since I couldn't see it. (front end, grille, push the fenders and quarters out, etc) After seeing the final rendering I was in and glad I let him run with it.
What I like is that it isnt over the top, too one off and in our opinion, will be timeless. The mods (except the grille) are subtle and most people dont even see them until pointed out. We were going for a racy aggressive look.
So here are a few pics. I'm not much with a camera or photobucket editing plus these indoor scenes with the florescents are tough. They just dont do her justice. The hand brushed wheels, the paint and body work are nuts and the detail just cant be seen in the pictures. We'll be at most of the shows coming up and would love to get down to DelMar to hang with some of you guys soon.

Yeah they said they use to. The guy i talked to said there was a recent acquisition so there has been some changes. They guy said the new owner lives up in Wa. and they intend to open a location out here somewhere.

I had a few questions for you mainly for my own feedback.
How is the over-ride fan switch working for you. Do you have to use it?
How is the engine temperature in traffic.
Did the remote air ride controller get hooked up?
I'm glad you finally got your car back home. I'm sure the neighbors love ya when you fire it up...LOL
I know when I came home last week and fired up my blower truck after 13 years of hibernation, My neighbor came right on over and said...."I remembered that sound and thought to myself....Nah ....couldn't be".

Hey Joe - good to hear from you. Thanks for all your hard work on it. I appreciate it.
Was up at the shop today. She isn't home just yet. A few things to wrap up on the punch list up so it should be home next week after the Cloverdale show this weekend. Just got 2 new front regulators today. Couldn't get the cranks on the old ones so those have to go in along with a few other little things.
I got to take her out for a rip this afternoon though and bang some gears. Gotta love blasting the AC when its 90* out. Its a must have in these old cars. She is running great. Chris put in another new set of valve springs so she winds right up to 6500 before the MSD rev limiter kicks in with no problem. The first two sets were too light. She sure sounds sick at 6000 RPM with those Borlas.
The fan override is great. Dont have to use it but it is good to have just in case. Chris put a new temp sending unit in last weekend and that corrected the misreading on the temp gauge. After ripping around today for a good 15 minutes with the AC on she was at 195*.
Chris drove it to Pleasanton and sat in traffic on 101 and 680 with no problems... except for pissing off a few Prius and Volvo owners :D
The Air ride remote is still out. Seems that was the problem with the controller crashing. When the controller and ECU were sent back they upgraded the software so it wasnt working with the prior version remote control module. I will contact RideTech and see what they will do. They now have an iPhone app so I may just go with that instead.
Glad to hear you got your old truck running again.

Your Very Welcome. It was a battle coming in to correct all the previous mechanics work.
I believe you will need the quarter window regulators as well since none of the window cranks would attach to any of the regulators.
The springs you are talking about are the Mechanical advance springs for the MSD Distributor.
I'm glad to hear you will have your car back soon.
I know your car and Bloodline very well. Wish I could have finished that one up as well but it has months and months of work on it before its done.

Hi,
Just wondering how you did at the Cloverdale Show.
I got a late call friday evening to run up to ALL IN ONE CUSTOMS which is across from West Coast and fix a $7,500 air ride system on a 64 Impala so the guy could cruise the parade. It was too funny. Another shop in Sacramento did the Air Ride install and they did some awesome work but failed to show the owner where the reset button was on the circuit breaker and how to reset it when it pops...LOL Oh it popped like designed. I told the guy you can't be dropping and raising the car 20 times and have 4 compressors running and not trip the breaker. Plus I had to point out his charging system is in need of a Power Master Alternator and another battery if he plans to play like that :)
I didn't see your car in the parade. I had a blast switching from riding in his 64 to riding in his 70 SS Chevelle. We left a lot of rubber up and down the main drag in that car...LOL
Two weeks ago I pulled a motor out of one of his chevelle's with a BDS 8-71 blower and he is hiring me to detune it and stuff it in one of his 64 Impala's...that's gonna be fun! After talking with BDS and picking a pulley with more teeth his poor motor lost over 150 hp and will now only be producing in the mid 700 Hp range. This is gonna be a fun project for me.
Funny story about that parade. The owner of the shop kept saying "hey that's my 69 Chevy truck"....point to a sweet baby blue 3/4 ton truck dropped and smoothed all out. I just let him talk and on the way back again he kept on so I finally starting busting up laughing and said..."Dude, I built that truck last year at my shop before moving up here"....Total Silence for the next few blocks.
Anyway, I hope you were at the show Saturday and finally able to drive your car home.
Joe

It was a good Cloverdale show. We swept the Camaro Class and won the Top Four award with a 37 Chevy street rod we built.
Jeff's silver car took first and another Camaro we built Bruce Kunkle's "Golden Girl" took second. We received a lot of great feedback about Jeff's car. It is a crowd favorite. I have really enjoyed building it. So many custom things were done to it (both large and small). I love the unassuming simpleness to it at first glance, but if you know Camaros you can really see how much it has been modified with a keen eye. I have put exactly 600 miles on it to date. I think I have shaken every gremlin out of her and made the corrections. The car is so much fun to drive, it is low, very loud, and fast. Blasting down a windy road is reminiscent to a Penske Sunoco Camaro I was hired to drive for two seasons in a historical race series. Now unfortunately I have ran out of excuses to keep it. It is time to send it home.

Well said. Simple yet detailed at the same time. Love the old school minimalist look with modern components. Can't wait to get her home.
Looking forward to the Wed night out at Sears Point we talked about to see what she will run and getting to the next GG event and run the cones. Also want to do the 2014 Run to the Coast event.

Last night got my car out to Sonoma Raceway (Sears Point) to see what I could get out of her. Disclaimer - It's been more than 25 years since I've raced at a track.
So ended up getting out there late and only got in three passes but had a fricken blast. I had no idea what she would run or, more importantly, what I could get out of her.
First pass... Brought it up to 3k, dumped the clutch and hammered it. Smoked the tires for probably 100 ft (lol) with a 2.97 60' and finished with a 15.3 at 103.25 mph. What a let down. Good mph though.
Second pass - had to dial in... Had no idea so I do 14.2 which was embarrassing since all these tuner guys are dialing in in the 12's and even some in the 11's. Well I only bring it up to 2k and ease the clutch a little for a much better launch, a .33 light and a 2.22 60' and cross with a 14.212 at 98mph missing 3rd and 4th gear. Ugh but cut a second off my first run and won.
Third pass - changed my dial in to 13.2 since I missed 2 gears (still just a guess). I cut a .485 light, spun the tires out of the hole with a 2.69 60'. Crossed the line at 106.66 mph for a 13.4. Getting there but not as quick as I had hoped.
Cut almost another second off the previous run but lost so was out for the night. I know there is a mid 12 in there. Just got to get off the line without spinning and cut a good light. Can't wait to go back next Wed but get there early and get several practice runs in.
Built it to drive it and happy to be able to finally get her out there and run her through the gears. :excited:
I will say that it is pretty amazing to see all the late model mustangs running 11's & 12's all day long on street tires and sound totally stock. I have a buddy who has a modified G8 who runs consistent 11.4's but he has it totally dialed in.

Menacing and Merciless... I like that. :D
Yeah the grille was a killer. Chris has 5 or 6 that didn't work out. He used a Pullmax to make the cross bars and it was a real pain to get every hole to line up on each bend but he finally got it.

You nailed it man. That before and after photo really says it all---especially how much work went into this car. It's the best front end i've ever seen on a 69. It looks elegant and aggressive at the same time---and it sounds pretty stout from the video. You have to be pumped. I love that you took it to the track already---that is way cool. Looking forward to doing same in mine once I get the new motor in there. Great job bro.

Hi,
I was wondering if your car is going to be at Pleasanton this weekend? I was thinking of taking my brother so he could see what I played with at the shop :)
I almost forgot to ask. If their is a road course set up....will you be taking it out for a spin :)

Took advantage of the great weather here in CA. to break in the new GoPro. Here is my first video shot while taking a quick drive running through the gears around the valley last weekend.
I'm really excited about the GoPro and learning how to use it. I've seen so many really cool videos on YouTube. I'm looking forward to experimenting and playing with it. I need a few more mounts to shoot different angles.
Used the GoPro Studio editing software. Still have a lot to learn so they will only get better.
Gotta love the Borla's. They sound soooo much better in person. Everything in the video was about 3/4 throttle. :D
Now I understand what people meant when they said, "who needs a stereo when you can listen to this every time you go out for a drive". Most of the time I don't even turn it on now.

Thanks guys. Fun stuff. Another new toy to take up more of my time.. LOL
So much to figure out with the GoPro editing. I get lost on YouTube looking at all the cool videos people have shot. I have a lot of ideas, now just need to play with it more.
Glad I went with the 3+ Silver. Great quality for such a small camera.
Only thing that bugs me is the cracking noise when its in the case. In a couple of the shots I had it in the case mounted to the rear window and you can hear the cracking. It muffles the sound too. I took it out to see what difference it made. Got rid of the cracking but fell over when sitting on the dash. LOL

Jeff, not sure if the new 3+ is the same as the old Hero I got from a few years ago but if you're talking about the unit not being absolutely tight in the plastic case which causes that noise, I found a fix of putting a few layers of painters tape on a couple sides to tighten it up in there and the issue went away.

Hey Jody, it was great meeting you guys this weekend. It was nice to out a face with the name.
It was fun hanging out and running in to a few guys from the forum. I saw a handful of guys wearing the the world famous Lat-G shirts.
The West Coast Auto Craft guys did pretty well with their 3 cars there. The red 37 Chevy took 1st place, the green Edsel took 2nd and I walked with a pair. I was very happy after being placed in the Full Custom Hardtop class.
Some fantastic cars there for sure. Always a great time.

Thanks guys.
Autorama is a different kind of show. Such a wide spectrum of cars & bikes. Some really amazing customs. The quality and level of these cars is just awesome just like the GNRS but on a smaller scale.
It was so fun just hanging out and watching people check out the car and listen to the comments. One of the best was a guy who was a little liquored up who stopped by and said, "kids, this is daddy's favorite Charger in the whole show". Just gotta laugh.
On a serious note, Chris mentioned that Rick Dore (builder of The Black Pearl) came by Saturday night as he was walking the show checking out some of the cars. Chris said he complemented him on the 37 Chevy and the Edsel but was really intrigued with the Camaro. Chris spent a while discussing the mods to the car. Rick said, "95% of the people here will walk by and not even notice or realize what's been done here since it was done so well. It just looks right". How awesome of a compliment is that? Holy.... He even came back two more times with a few guys to check it out again and point things out that he and Chris talked about.
Last year it was Art Himsl complimenting the paint and body. That's what I love about shows like this where you get to have top builders who are cool enough to compliment another builder for what they have done; because Mr. Dore is right, 95% of the people likely won't realize what goes into it. Just like the average Joe who doesn't know protouring just cant appreciate what so many of these killer cars have put into them for upgrades that allow them to perform so well.
Now on to the next adventure... I think we need to head out to ThunderHill for the SCCA Spring event in May and break this baby in the right way.

Thanks... Mario, you've got nothing to rethink on that beast. With everything you are doing mine will pale in comparison.
Those wheels of yours will look awesome on Doom... But I get it, that's the problem with buying wheels before the car is done. I bought mine with polished hoops and brushed centers and now look at them, brushed hoops and black centers.
The next set will be centerlocks... Which is after the tranny upgrade and Stack Injection :unibrow:

Yeah, pretty flippin excited about the shoot. We had a great time yesterday and Mike, Thad and Zack are really cool guys. The "testing" was out east of St. Helena by Lake Hennessy and in Pope Valley. It was a beautiful day.
We started the day off filling up both cars and 2 one gal. cans just in case since the area was about 18 miles away. We ended up burning through 23 gallons of gas in my car.
They had to make a run mid day in the Battle Wagon back down to Napa trying to buy two 5 gallon cans to fill up. They only found one 5 gal and a 2 gal can. Mike is a "Spirited" driver. :D
They had to make a 2nd run about 7:15 to get more because Chris ran out of gas in the roadster.

Here are a few more of the cars. Chris from WCAC brought the Steampunk roadster along to put some tuning miles on it so the EFI could get more learning time.
We couldn't have asked for a more perfect day. March in Ca. :relax:
Again, a big thanks to Mike, Zack and Thad. What a great experience. Cant wait to see what they come up with as the final product. It should be out in a couple weeks.

They shot the PCH C10 truck two weeks ago which should be out this week. I saw a quick preview on Facebook today.

Yes it was up by Hennessy and back in Chiles Valley. There's a pretty twisty section that Mike made several trips through.
Can't wait to see the drone shots. We were watching the footage on Zacks iPhone as Mike was cruising through the canyon. Looked so cool so I hope some of it makes it through the edits.
I gotta get one of those.

They refer to the Caprice as the Battle Wagon but I like your thinking Greg. That's a hell of an idea because it pretty much is while on their on the road. It's perfect for filming because the pop up rear seat opens facing to the rear so Thad sits there to film when they are the lead car.
Last season a car they were shooting died so they did an episode on the BW out at Sears Point. Pretty funny stuff
During my shoot there was some talk and a deal was made to enhance and perk up the ol' girl. Future episode on that likely.
May also be seeing more of the roadster too.

Teaser preview of the PCH C10R they shot 2 weeks ago. The episode should be out later this week.
Look for the truck as it will get pushed down the page as they post more videos.
