I'm sure this has been covered on here before but what Game system would be a good overall choice for a 11 yr old boy, He has been playing his PS2 for a long time and I'm going to get a new one for him at Christmas. He likes racing, shooting, and Star Wars type of games. Any suggestions would help.

In our household, we have both a PS3 and a Wii.
The Wii is used mostly for family oriented gaming as it's really fun, but I don't like playing the other genre's on it such as driving, shooter, etc. My 6yr old also picked it up quickly so that was a driver also.
The PS3 is a much better overall device for gaming as the games are higher quality in both graphics and substance. It also has the benefit of a blu-ray drive for now or later.
I've never had much interest in an Xbox as it seemed like a PS3 without blu-ray, but a similar price.
Good Luck regardless. There're all fun!!

The Xbox will be more widely used by his friends, atleast its always seemed that way with me, but to play online, you do have to pay for xbox, its like 60 bucks a year for online, the PS3 is free online, but less people use it, and I've heard its not as good for some reason.. The PS3 also has Blu-ray, but how many people really watch Blue-ray enough to make it useful. In addition, the PS3 costs around 100 dollars more... Games are about the same cost, in case you couldn't tell, I just made this decision and i went with the Xbox, I love it, and I used to be a play station guy. Oh, both systems will need an HDMI cable for best clarity if you have an HD TV..

You really can't go wrong with either PS3 or XBox. I have a PS3 and really enjoy it.

The number one factor would be if he wants to play online with his friends and which system most of his friends have? All the platforms share most of the same game titles. They each have "signature" games that they claim as their own. You have dedicated fans of each console and they swear there are major differences. I think it's a Ford/Chevy thing.
As long as you are involved with him, there is no wrong decision.

PS3 one of the original 80 gig and still playing strong! But We are looking into the x box for the holidays because of the Kinect feature. It looks like an upgraded Wii device without the controllers. I am told most of his friends have xbox he is 7.

My Son is also 11. He lives on the XBox. All of his friends have XBox, they sorta dislike the PS3 online play. I also enjoy playing the XBox myself, you might get addicted too if you aren't careful. haha

Im a PS3 guy and I would suggest getting him one because the controller is what he is used to, but if 99% of his friends have X-box 360 which is probably the case I'd get him the Xbox 360 so he can share games, play online etc. or else you may find the system sitting as he goes ahead and plays xbox at his friends house.

Thanks guys, Good answers thats why we post here, What about game selection/cost.
Game cost will be about the same.
Go with the PS3. The PS3 allows you free online play, where the X-Box will charge you to play. Plus, X-Box is also known for the red ring of death. Personally, I spent way too much time playing GT5 and MW3 on PS3.
