I have an LS-1 in a 72 Camaro and when it sits for a couple weeks and you start it up the lifters are noisy for a few seconds. Is it normal for the LS motor lifters to drain down and make some noise when started after sitting for a few weeks?

Very normal. GM has had several service bulletins for noisey lifters. Still wouldn't hurt to check the preload and mechanically check the oil pressure because the pump bypass has a tendency to stick also.

needle bearing failures are not rare on those motors. Seen them in an oil pan before

I would wonder if my daily driver Suburban was running if the lifters wern't pounding away when the rig is cold. Very normal.

how are you certain it's the lifters? Easy to take off valve covers and look at things. Does it go away completely after warmed up?

From how you describe it, it sounds like piston slap. These are common on these engines, they make noise when it is cold and when it warms up, it goes away.

I had it happen on a 03 Silverado and GM ended up changing the pistons out for it to go away. But, that was only after taking them to arbitration.
