Hey guys,
I have been on here since 2006. What is a realistic price for finding a 69 Camaro that has an LS motor, auto transmission, vintage air, 4 link suspension, mini tubbed, etc.? I am guessing around $75K. I just want to have an idea on how much I should look to spend before I seriously start looking around. I am just in the planning stages of looking for one and want to do a lot more research before I start. I don't need a show car, just something that looks good and has all of the modern upgrades. Would like to race it. No autocrossing though. I know was not very specific, but generally that is what I am looking for. I don't mind doing some stuff myself, but I don't have a lot of experience with this stuff, nor does anyone in my family, Dad, brother, etc.
Thanks,
Matt

You just missed a killer deal in the FS section. Had everything you wanted but with a SBC which I think sold for around $40k. There's another in the for sale section as well. Black with red interior has everything minus the motor and trans but is setup for an LS driveline, you could buy that car and drop in an LS driveline for a decent price?

Good examples go for between 40 - 150k. I'd say if you're already in the market at 75k you have a good reference point. Depending on what you want you can move up or down from there. As Rybar mentioned, there's a lot of good deals out there right now and the market is soft. I personally would not jump into a 75k deal unless I knew exactly what I was getting (i.e. inspected or very familair w the car or builder). Good luck and post up some examples of what you're looking at!

Thanks. What is the biggest engine I could go with and still use the automatic transmission? I think the LS7 uses the 6 speed only. Just curious.

I'm sure companies like Mast Motorsports or Turn Key Engines could build you a big cube 440-460 ci LS motor mated to an Auto tranny to retrofit into a '69.
If you are thinking stock from a GM vehicle would probably be the 6.2L LS3 motor.

http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=33806 This shop did all of the metal work on my 69 SS mini tub. Roy and the rest of the crew at Camaro Concepts did an excellent job for me. :woot:

Torque ratings on various components are very misleading.... because it all "depends" --- as in --- what size tires are you running -- are they sticky 200 Treadwear or 600's....
You can't put pressure on components if the tires are not hooking up etc. Personally I like an undersized tire -- it's my "slow blow" fuse.... and keeps me
from breaking stuff... but of course that wouldn't be worth a dang on the track.
If you're talking about a road course... when you say you'd like to track the car -- I wouldn't do an automatic. They're harder to control on the down shift -- and up shift for that matter... When I hammer the MBZ it can really get some power down - but it also has a very sophisticated ECU that rev matches etc.... So if an auto is what you're into -- you might look for that LS motor / auto with factory ECU with rev matching... In order to do that the motor would have to be Drive by wire...

LS3 would work. Guess I could go with a turbo or supercharger if I want more power.
Weaver,
You can go mild or wild. What are your plans for the car? Do you want to do auto-x or open track days? Do you want a show car paint job or a job that will be okay? Is a shop going to do a majority of the work?

Not wild. Here is what I want. I want a nice suspension with modern day engine and interior and some horsepower. I won't be doing autocrossing. Mostly a street car that I can take to the drag strip and have some fun or just cruise around. I like the automatic transmissions. I don't need the best of the best, just an upgrade over the 69 model. Unless I find the color I want, at some point I will probably just have it repainted the color I want, but it doesn't have to be show paint. Was thinking a 69 Camaro with hideaway headlights, LS motor with perhaps a supercharger/turbocharger, auto transmission, mini tub running 300 series in the back, etc. I don't know a whole lot about the car, other than the engine and transmission. I am referring to the frame/subframe, suspension, etc. That is stuff I will have to research and see what would work best for me. The most horsepower I had was a 92 mustang notch with an s trim vortech blower with a stock motor. That was pushing 325. I am looking at double that. I like to go fast.

Don't pull the plug until you find exactly what you want. Then you can work on the price.
I bought my 69 firebird painted shell with a slew of extra parts in it for a heck of a deal. Had loads of DSE stuff, Vintage air, no engine and trans, paint was flawless black, mini tubbed rear end with leaves, Currie 9", lowered springs all around for $15k. The initial price was $24k on ebay. A month or two went by and several auctions later I got it for 15.
After an LS3/T56 transplant and many other upgrades (minus the 4-link, which will come later), I plan to have around $45k in it.
I know I got a steal, but IMO, some of these guys are charging way too much for shells. Keep shopping and you can find really good deals, like painted shells with most of the body work done in the $15k to $20k range.

Thanks. I need to do my research on rear ends, suspensions, frames and interiors. I would like to run an LS3 with an automatic transmission. Maybe go with a supercharger to top it off. Not sure if that would be better or a turbocharger. Never had a turbo car before, but have had a supercharger. The whine was loud. :unibrow:

I think you have a good plan with the LS3 supercharged with an auto. That will make an outstanding street with occassional drag car. Find a clean car with the right color paint and you can always swap the drivetrain, wheels and suspension. If I had to do it all over again, that's what I'd do. I don't think you need to spend 75k. I bet you can have a damn nice car for 50-60kk if you buy right.

I would either go with silver or pewter, something modern. I like the intro v rod wheels, probably 18's on the front, 20's on the rear on 335's. I like fuel injection, so that is why I thought the lsx engine would be good with the auto transmission with the overdrive. I am thinking I could get what I want for around $60k. Sure would beat my current ride.
