I have a client who want to build and LS and 6 speed for his '69 Camaro. Here's the requirements. Make 700ish Hp and be able to drive it to work without getting beat up. I'm thinking supercharger on a LSX block configuration. What do you guys think?

Let's get specific- cam specs- Crank and rod manufacture. Displacement etc.

Short of calling Mast, what are some good ideas?

Thanks- Chris

I would not do lsx block because I have read they have various issues and require a lot of machining to use.

At 700 hp I'd debate if you need a block with provisions for 6 bolt cylinder heads. I'd say forged 402-427 short block, TFS or AFR heads, a cam spec'd out by someone who has experience (like PatG on ls1tech), and a supercharger and you're there.

You can also go bigger on displacement and cam, add fast 102 intake and probably get there NA but drivability may suffer.

Realistically you can just throw a turbo or supercharger on any ls engine, even a stock 4.8l and probably make 700hp but for reliability and drivability sake I'd probably not do that.

I'm also in agreement that a LSX block is neccessary. I have a friend who is running a 348 with 850 rwhp with a ECS supercharger setup.

I really like the new kenne bell supercharger. http://kennebell.net/KBWebsite/SC_pg/layouts/SCCAM6.2.htm

They are getting 720rwhp out of a stock motor. Put some good pistons and rods in it, you will be fine.

Cam, there are so many out there, I've got no clue which is best.

get a crate ls9. with exhaust and a tune 700 is no problem and you can drive it everyday

Have a look at Wegner Automotive, they have a few N/A LS motors on their site making those numbers -- and they are great guys and always more than happy to help.

Their youtube page....

I'd have to agree. Plus you get the benefit of GMs engineering and don't have to mix and match parts. At those power levels having everything designed as a package from a OEM goes a long way in my book. Daily driver comfort and reliability and all the kick you could ever hope to want all in one crate from GM. Expensive up front, but well worth it overall I think.

Chris,

No doubt boost will get you there, but how about a 460-500 inch N/A LS, block prepped by RHS or RED. Callies/Weisco internals, Big LS7 black label heads or WCCH. FAST intake/102mm throttlebody. Cammed approprietly should do 650 rear wheel no problem and drive nice.

Look at Rupp's build, he drives his with out issues, dont know if he ever changed his throttlebody but it should be in the 650+ range.

Ls9 or even a lsa it's 556 and w a tune and or a pulley. It would be there. To me it's a no brainer. My father in law has a ls9 in his chevyii drove it over 1000 miles on power tour. What more could u expect. And it has a warranty,

Wegners do these 700 plus HP combos all day long for street cars. Call and talk to Casey. You dont need a LSx block

^ I agree. For drivability and reliability its hard to beat a setup like that.

Does your customer want 700 to the wheels or flywheel? Is your customer accustom to high HP cars? I'm willing to bet that a LS2 or LS3 with a maggie or whipple would be more than enough for your customer.

Do you spend much time on LS1tech? If not, you should start!

You know for a 12 month warranty a GM performance LSx blocked motor is a pretty damn good deal... Have a few customers with supercharged motors like this. A 376 lsx made for boost can easily make the power you want and not brake the bank.

ls9 power, warranty, driveability, will make more of a visual statement also when you pop the hood. the only downside to a ls9 is the cost.

To the OP.....I preferred the cube route I went this direction, RHS, 460, bigger heads :unibrow: and an intake that didnt choke off all those cubes as the FAST would. Internal goodies include Lunati crank, Callies rods, JE pistons.... Cam shaft is TBD as we are still in the dyno phase and have a few to choose from. Final power numbers will be somewhere in the mid 800s and all under 7k in a M6 4th gen. (Its pretty too! ;) )

Boost is a nice option as well. Nice forged/sleeved LS2 with a TVS2300 or Kennebell power is there all day long.

Going back to N/A for a minute, my builder (Virginia Speed), recently put together a "conservative" LS2 440 that made just over 700fwhp topped with a FAST and multiple 427ci easily making 650ish without any effort. Add a Marcella on any of those combos and :hail:

Thanks everyone...when you are spending that kind of money, I want to make sure we are making a good educated choice, and that's what this community is all about.

We ended up with a Wegner Motorsports 416 with a Magnuson supercharger:unibrow: looks like 850+ HP! and lots of street manners. Carl Wegner is a great guy and knows a few things about LS engines. This is going to be a fun project.

Thanks again- Chris

Sounds like a great combo...should do a fair share of tire shredding.
