It started out in 1982 at the age of fourteen I got the bug for hotrods... My father’s job required him to transfer the family to Huntington Beach California from a small town in Texas. I was fortunate enough to get a job working for a neighbor down the street doing various mechanic type jobs. It might have been a complete automatic transmission rebuild one week, the next might be an engine rebuild and the next might be a complete paint job on a car. Nevertheless, it was interesting to see a lot of different types of cars and work while working with him. I saved enough money to buy two wrecked 1969 Camaros for $500.00. I was able to coble the two together and build a sbc 350 and turbo 350 auto transmission for the car. We ended up painting it 1977 Corvette yellow. It was not quite running when we painted it but I figured it would not take too much to finish it up. Several weeks before we were due to paint it, I got the news that the family was moving back to Texas, so the rush was on to get the car painted. The moving truck literally arrived the day after we pulled the car out of the booth. We pushed it inside and it was strapped down for the ride back to Texas.
I completed the car just after getting my drivers license and drove it all thru high school. I ended up parking it a few years later after I started doing paint and body work, thinking I’d get started on a real restoration soon…
Well life happened and the next thing you know, a wife and two kids and all the rest of the stuff that happens 18 years later I got the bug to work on it. I loaded it on the trailer and brought it home from my parent’s house. That was in 2006, flash forward to the present, my son turns fourteen this year, same age as when I bought the car. Winter of 2010, we got that old engine fired up and running after 21 years. We tore the car down and realized the car was worse off than expected. We decided to go for a professional opinion on the replacement of the metal of the car, after much thought we decided to rebuild it as a pro street type car to be driven often and put thru the ringer that I could only dream of years earlier.

Cool story. Those were the days when you could buy 2 69s for 500.00. I loved the 80s for that reason. Im glad you kept your car all this time. I wish i could have done the same. Now im starting over. Keep the updates coming.

I am currently working on getting the new sheet metal lined up on the front end, hanging the fenders and and then working on the header and valance panel. I got the engine fitted up with at least 3/4" clearance around the LS1 and T-56 and the tunnel. It felt strange tuning the new metal with a large hammer and blocks and then coming back and cutting out for the shifter... As I've told many people, it's just a really big 3D jigsaw puzzle...:woot:

I just got the fenders and inner fenders together and hanging on the car, the drivers side is being a little more trouble but it's going in the right direction. I did have to do some minor trimming of the inner fender to clear the "TCI" subframe. The next few days I am planning on getting the valance and header panel in and see how things look.

I like your rear bars on your cage!!! Finally someone that has understood that you have to clear the heads of the rr passengers for them to be worth bending.... Lol!!! Seriously, i really dig em, did you do them yourself? If not, did you buy em bent that way? I always see them bent but not enough so that they really clear people or, they are installed too inside like too much in the center of the main hoop, in the center of car if you will.

Glad to see your moving ahead, nice project....and talk about a lesson in perseverance!!!!!!!

And i tough my 5 years to do mine we're long!!!! I'll stop wyning now....

Yea there are so many different things that have to be thought thru when you start taking a car to this level. We had many discussions about the cage and the actual need versus functionality. We finally settled on the final design. The bars extend all the way to the top of the rear frame rails. The cage was all custom built and bent with a hand powered bender mounted on the floor. The guys over at Camaro Concepts in Houston did the work on the cage and metal replacement.

Love the postings. I find this project to be the typical Hot Rodders story. Passion at an early age. A lot of hard work with little money. Then kids and and family enters the picture. Everything is put on hold. The car sits in a garage or at Mom and Dads. Then after the kids start to get older, the passion starts to rear it's head again and the next thing you know you are towing the car home for a total makeover. Congrats and I think builds like this are a great example of what most gear heads go through.

LOVE to see old projects get new life!! I need to train my two dogs to guard the Camaro!!

At least you kept your car when the kids came. I sold mine for the down payment on our first house. Now I have my oldest working with me on the car.

I like the roll bar and work inside to stiffen up the car. Custom bars and cages are the only way to go. Most of the kits that I've seen aren't tight, and gobble up a lot of room inside the car.

Once the suspension was picked out we picked out the wheels. I did end up with 1/2" spacers on the front. I figured that somewhere in the future I would step up to some custom made wheels, but for now I hope they will work out.

After 18 years of it being asleep we had decided to try and get the old engine running one last time. After pulling the plugs we gave a little dose of marvel mystery oil to each cylinder and let it sit overnight, I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to gently turn the motor over by hand. I then disconnected the line from the tank at the pump, primed the engine with out fuel and then ran a new line into a small fuel container, made a short jumper wire to the coil and a tool to jump across the starter solenoid. Put the plugs back in and decided to give it a try... It sounded just like I remembered... Nothing like memories coming back to life.... :D

Things have been slowly moving along. The drip rails have been a lot of fun to get just the way that I want them. After looking at a lot of cars it seems that some people spend a lot of time getting the inside of the channel looking really good and others not so much. I decided that with all of the other things that I had done that I did not want it to be noticeable that any work had been done in that area.

I ended up going with a Vintage Air Gen IV electronic control AC unit with the one piece hoses. I did not want to see any bolts thru the firewall or the hoses under the dash or see the hoses coming thru the firewall. I fabricated my own brackets for the unit that are very rigid compared to the stock brackets. I ended up drilling custom holes for the hoses and then I will place grommets in the holes. The hoses will route above the replacement kick panel and then inside of the fender.

Thanks to all for the compliments. Its amazing what passion will drive you to do.
One of the things that I have been able to figure out is that I need to be spraying the white sealer over the gray primer before spraying the velocity yellow. The yellow does not cover real well. So far being able to spray the bottom and then the firewall has sharpened up my skills, after twenty four years they have gotten a little rusty, but it's coming back.
I went ahead and cut and buffed the firewall as a good spot for the practice for the rest of the car.

Here are my latest updates. I moved back to the interior I chose to go with the LizardSkin Sound Control & LizardSkin Ceramic Insulation in the dash, firewall, floor and quarters and plan on spraying UPOL liner in the trunk.

Looks fantastic by the way! And nice prep work (taping and paper etc) too!

Thanks for noticing the effort...

The places where I am spraying the UPOL liner are the trunk floor and the rear outer tub and the front fender well areas for durability reasons.

The documentation for the Lizard skin says that it is not as durable a product as is the UPOL liner.

The rest of the areas are the two different parts of the lizardskin, first layer is the Sound control, then the Ceramic for the temp control.

By the way this is my first time using these products, so we will see.....

Thanks for the compliment. It is definitely a labor of love...

:superhack:

The two different slits in the tunnel are necessary for the ebrake handle and the back one is for the cable. I am going to be using a console and ebrake assembly from a 2002 Camaro. The front opening allows me to slide the base of the handle assembly thru with a thin spacer above it to allow the correct height for the console placement.

I do like the project and I envy you for having kept the car so many years. I still regret selling the '68 I had as a kid. Had a question about the Lizard Skin, is the grey coating the Ceramic and the black the Sound Deadener? I ask because I have the same planned for my build and wanted to know. I hope that you are saving money over the mat type deadeners.

Best wishes on a successful completion.

Easy way to remember is that it is black and white.
Black container is the sound control, the white container is the ceramic temp control.
Both products spray out about the same color. The black is sprayed first.

If possible, can you PM me the approx. cost of doing the Lizard Skin. Working on my planned build and doing a cost estimation before starting and would like to plug in numbers for doing the Lizard Skin like you did. I talked with the paint manager of the series "Wrecks to Riches" about the product and he was very enthusiastic about the product. Said that it worked better for them (and faster) than the mat deadener and he'd do it again in a minute. Just want to know a ball park number, not an exact figure. One suggestion that I was told was to also apply the ceramic to the underside of the car where the exhaust pipes were to be routed to further reduce heat transfer through the floor/trunk.

Thanks,
Rod

After much internal debate I decided to spray the jamb area's around the hinges before paint so that I would insure the best possible coverage.
I used the reduced epoxy primer (PPG DP48LF) as a sealer before the color.

It's a lot of work and probably overkill but oh well...

Wow, that's a bright yellow. Makes a statement. I have zero body skills so watching this portion intently to learn what I can. Did your door hinges need rebuilding? Curious as most of the '69's I'm looking at have really tired hinges that need rebuilding. Looks to me like you are making good steady progress. Will be tracking this as I really want to see how this all turns out in the end. I love watching builds where the person spends time on the foundation before adding the go fast or bling parts. I think the car ends up being one that's been built to last.

Just asking cuz I'm right behind you!

I was going to try the drilling before I did the paint work, but the amount of adjustment that is available on the first gens is crazy. Imagine it as working in 4D.
We ended up taking the hinges off and putting them back on a number of times and figured out that it does not take but a very small amount of movement to throw everything off. So I didn't feel like drilling a few small alignment holes was going to be very beneficial for my situation.
In the end I felt better about understanding what adjustments were necessary to move door to the right place. I found that by using a regular pencil and marking around the hinges that I could get everything in position.
This is why I chose to shoot thru out the area and then reshoot again after the doors are on, and then clear.

It's been twenty four years since I have done any paint or primer work. I left the paint and body shop business to work a career in the petrochemical industry in operations.
I still have all of my old spray guns and equipment but I ended up buying new HVLP guns.
They seem to be way more efficient with the materials.
I started out pretty rusty at the technique but it's coming back with practice.

Thanks,
I worked that decision to paint it apart over many times.
I ended up assembling the front end four times and then tearing it all back apart just to get comfortable with the effort to get it together without doing too much damage to the surfaces.
I did not have access to a booth so that helped drive that decision.

The flex hoses are first run thru stainless rubber lined hose clamps that are are secured to the rear end with a large industrial ty-wrap http://www.cabletiesunlimited.com/catalog/product/view/id/879/s/ty537mx/category/48/ that has an eye on the one end that is secured to the clamp with a stainless steel #8 screw and locknut. The flex hose terminates to the hard line thru the standoff that came with the brake hoses that were purchased thru Tobin @ KORE3. The hardlines terminate at the cross above the rear end attached to an aluminum bracket that I made. I came up with the layout and design so I'll see over time how it works....
Part of the reason for the design was that I had gotten the rear end powder coated and I had forgotten to mock up the brake lines first...

Making some progress, I got the AC all vacumed, purged and filled with freon.

I was having issues with leakes.on radiator hoses, but have now got those all corrected.
The small steam vent hose was giving me the most trouble dripping down on the other two hoses making it look like they were the problem.

I was also having an issue with my new Pro 5.0 shifter. I was barely able to get into first gear and reverse, after further looking at the shifter and some go ogling I was able to determine that the GTO T56 that I am using needed the shifter lever swapped out with shorter one from a camaro T56, oh well live and learn.

Got the grill, bumper and headlight trim installed.

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j463/sleepertime/Assembly/20160214_193137.jpg

It took some digging to figure out this little known fact that the Camaro uses the shorter shifter lever on the left.
