View Full Version : 1970 Formula project "Cochise"

Just wanted to share a little project I've been working on in conjunction with Brian Finch & Scott Mock with the board.... The car represents my first plunge into the LS powered world, showcase my 18" Carbon Fiber 3pcs wheels and will showcase Carbon Fiber product offerings from both Carbon Kustoms and Anvil Auto in what I believe to be a subtle yet striking fashion...
Ben Hermance was kind enough to render my interpretation of the replacement to my earlier Green 70 Formula (Keylime twist project) and I'm very excited to release the results in the below rendering..
I (as well as Scott Mock) will be updating the thread with build info over the coming weeks and will be pushing for the build to be completed in time for the planned SEMA cross country tour this November...

Scott has been thrashing on the car for months and he will post some shots soon as his craftsmanship is awesome as always...
The car will sit on a full "Scott Mock" sub-frame and 4 link rear end with a 6 speed magnum transmission... The engine choice is currently in the air with a certain really well know engine that is currently being refreshed being strongly considered,,, and or there could just be a Lingenfelter power plant in the cars future.. A full Carbon front clip will be utilized and possible Carbon doors are being considered as well...
The objective will be to create a light weight "extremely user friendly street/show" car that has the nuts to run with the top of the pack on the road course....
Oh and not to worry,,,, I still have my old school Poncho power plants in quite a few of my builds,,, just trying something new too...

Ric, Ron, Sadly the only pic I have of the car is this one prior to Scott going to town.... What I can say is that Scott tells me it's darn near rust free as a shell (I'm sure he'll share some pic's real soon)...
http://i997.photobucket.com/albums/af93/projectwarpath/1970%20Blue%20Formula/70whiteFormula.jpg
The car was from Texas prior to me importing it to Canada and when I looked it over it seemed to be a "real nice" car so I wasn't to surprised when Scott confirmed his findings with me....

I will have some real good photo's this coming week of the sub frame,Rear suspension,Will be stepping up the work on the body this week also. Will be installing DSE mini tub'sSmoothing the firewall, and fixing some real small rust bubble's.Will also be rising the trans tunnel to fit the T56 trans.Albert want's the car to set super low but still be a Top Notch performer. We are going to tuck the 3"Exhaust up in the floor so the sub frame will be the lowest part on the under side.Let me say this Albert has been a real Peach to Work with.I am really hoping Albert enjoy's the car as much as I have enjoyed working on it and with Albert.Thank's Bud.

We will have the car at SEMA....Scott is a very talented dude that knows his time schedules very well on F-body builds.... Organization and parts are the keys here.... The parts are arriving daily and we all know Scott has the rest covered off based on his build experiences to date.....
It should be noted that there is a team approach here and the interior is almost ready to ship from Toronto,,, and the drive line should ship over the next few days.... Paint will be handled by Brian and he has committed to a 4 week turn around given how clean the the shell is and and how strait the Carbon parts he is working with are.... This is a major thrash,,, but we'll do it...

As Scott stated we'll have some picture updates here soon, however I thought it would be nice to share some general news with the board also......
Today I made a deal with Frank from Prodigy Customs to purchase a brand new 418 super charged stroker LS3 to give "Project Cochise" a healthy set of lungs.... I spoke with many people with this being my first LS project and Frank had the magic bullet as you say both in price point and a quality deliverable,,,,, to the others I spoke with,,, thank very much for all the time you spent with me it is greatly appreciated....
Shafi,,,, Keisler stepped up with a great solution as always thank you for all your ongoing patience pal ;-) cause you know this one is going to be beaten on relentlessly my friend....
I also had a long chat with my good pal Mike Manning from "American Auto Wire" and wanted to thank you guys for pushing the order through and supporting Scott's thrash on what is proving to be a very cool little build if I do say so myself... I'm getting Dam excited cause this little Bird should really fly before it's all said and done....
There are more people to thank for their efforts to see quality parts reach Scott on time so that this build can be a reality,,,, and we will be publicly thanking them from time to time on this thread......
And The Thrash Goes On!!!
Thank You All !!!!

As Scott has indicated the progress is coming along great!!! (big thanks/shout out to Scott and all the people making this coome together.....)
Thought I'd share a little eye Candy as well,,,, we made some subtle changes to take care of mechanical monitoring needs and in the process created a custom look......
The guages are a custom set of Auto Meter internals, however they look stock for the most part... The oil temp, fuel pressure, and Tach are all Auto Meter pieces fit into the stock housings with the faces re-printed....

24hrs of hauling and I'll be there to see it ...... Scott and the gang have been thrashing and now the ultimate challenge faces him LOL,,, me with a wrench in my hands LOL. I've been like a Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,,,, my wife finally told me to get the Hell out of here and go see the car already,,,, LOL so I'm Kansas bound ...
I wanted to pause and thank a few people as this has been an insane thrash... Firstly Scott and his family and friends that have been unbelievable.... Also the gang over at Ride Tech, Forgeline, Baer, American Auto wire, Vintage Air, Optima Batteries, BFG, Heather and Pete from F-body warehouse, Prodigy customs and lastly but not the least of which to mention Brian Finch who as always has my back and has been quietly working in the background assisting Scott where ever possible. We have been bless to have a team of great people pull together on this thrash and I wanted to personally and publicly thank them all very much....
And now my latest favorite photo LOL.

Well. The car is up an running,Driving. This morning car would not start.Lucky we had Mike Norris here.He quickly found the problem,Wrong Cam Gear.I called a good Friend Dave Hosley from Superior Chevy in K.C.He opened up for us today and got us the right cam gear. While I drove to K.C. and Back Mike and Kevin got the motor all tore down and had the motor up and running with in a few hour's of our return W/the correct cam gear.

Project update.Well Albert is all loaded up a headed to vegas. We were able to finish everything but the headliner.Could not find anyone local that could work with our time line so I guess we will look into that after SEMA.Albert & Kevin took the car out for about a 20 minute shake down.Everything worked will well.I hope the set up I put into the car will be close enough to work well at OPTIMA.Not bad for a 6 week total build.9weeks if you include the paint and body work.Albert was great to work with & super easy to please. We might have been able to finish sooner if the motor would have showed up all togather instead of in pieces and some those missing. But now I am a Blower Expert.:lol:Photo's to follow soon.

Guys sorry for the delay. I'm having trouble with getting on lateral from the widow spot I usually post from. I have the pics of it on pro-touring Facebook and hubgarage.I have no idea why I'm having this issue for two days. Sorry
the car looks Awesome. Scott's hub garage page is vintage racing and performance. If you car to look.
Hope to get them posted here soon.

Thank's Guy's.Now I need to try and get my shop cleaned up.Thank's Albert. The best time I ever had working a car.:thumbsup:The best thing about optima was Kevin litterly beat the crap out of the car and it didn't break. In the big sweeper corner he said he was drifting the thing about 90mph.The motor makes so much power Kevin said it wants start spining tires around 3500rpm.As we stood on the over pass at puhrump you could hear the tires spining all the way down the front straight. The car needs a higher rear gear.Have fun Albert, but be safe w/it.

I am real pleased how well everything went at SEMA & Optima. If we could have a few days to work on a better suspension set up.I think Kevin could have done better than 8th. on the road course, and 16th.on the autox. But 7th. for style and design was cool.Maybe the next car I can get get Albert to give me 1 more week to try and make the car look better.

One more week huh? Lol! That car looks perfect Scott.Eric,The car is real nice, but I really needed some more time so little things like small brackets could have been made nicer.I wish we could have time to drive the car more than 2 miles before it left for Vegas.Had it not been pouring rain and also freezing on the way to puhrump fri. night we could have ajusted the shocks and brake bias. The thing drove well on the trip but trying to tell where tire brake bias needed to be would have tough in those weather conditions. It is what is was,so I will just say Thank's to everyone who helped out during the build,Brian Kellison really was 1 that helped so much.Spent full days helping get the fender's,hood, nose all fit up on the car.Saved us a ton of time.Ken Vervnyck stayed to help out w/the interior after he got the wiring finished.Kevin worked tons of hours, but since he got to drive the car,and then had tv's AJ snuggle up next to him after group B quick run.I think that's thanks for him.  What a great time. The joke at sema was Everyone asking me to build them a car in 6 weeks.Only 1 a year guy's.

Back from SEMA and the Optima and had a great time..... We tied in 24th place (with a three way split for 24th) at the Optima with a untested new car that ad zero sorting time and feel like we won the Holly Grail.... The cars there were incredible and the drivers were "really good" and for us to have finished the car in roughly 6 weeks and compete,,, well lest just say we were more than happy...
This car, driven by Scott's son Kevin, did what others/many said couldn't be done... It was built in six weeks, driven with no testing and placed in a more than respectable spot in the end... It stayed together untested/sorted,,, and in the morning session of group B held the group speed record on the track at one point.... Congratulations to Scott and Kevin for a job well done guys...
A quick shot at the track
