What’s the best way to adjust valves in a SBC with hydraulic flat tappet cam? The lifters are pumped up and I started adjusting with a .02 clearance but I’m not sure I’m doing this right. Any help would be great.

I always adjust my mechanical cam by setting the exhaust valve when the intake valve is just starting to close and set the intake valve when the exhaust valve is just opening. I normally go by the firing order and bump the starter. As far as adjusting a hydraulic cam, it's not exact science. Once you achieve no lash(You could use a .001-.002 feeler gauge until you feel the right drag) then another 1/4, 1/2 etc... I'd go by your cam manufacturer or engine builder.

A sure fire way I have used over the years is to...
Set one valve intake or exhaust and peak lift and adjust the other valve on the same cylinder, which will now be at it lowest point on the cam, too zero lash. Then preload it too 1/4 or 1/2 turn past zero. I prefer 1/4 turn but have had some ticking on some setups. If a 1/4 turn works use it. :) Do the same thing for the opposite valve and go one cylinder at a time. Works every time.

Adj intake when exhaust starts to open and adj exhaust when intake starts to close
