Here is a 69 Camaro that we started a few months back for a local customer. He brought in a driver quality car and wanted to really take it to the next level. Unhappy with the ride, the power, the interior, or exterior, the plan was for a complete overhaul to bring the car up to today's standards. Not a full blown track car, but something that he could drive across country comfortably and still be in contention at local auto-X events.

Still in the planning phase on a lot of things, but here are the basics to get started.

Would this be the same camaro I saw in the background of recently posted picture of another build? You know, the one with the Nelson Twin turbo sitting in it.:D Either way, I'm sure it will be another award winner.

The body ended up in worse condition than we had originally thought. It was not horrible, but not great. Some one had patched the floors and did a custom quarter panel installation on both sides. The doors and fenders had some previous work as well. The car now needed floors, quarters, door skins, and lower fenders.

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/Bruce%201969%20Camaro/Picture18691.jpg

The body was then squared and fixtured and the panel repair began.

Floor and firewall were cut out to begin repairs.

New center crossmember design that will be used on all production chassis.

This is the same car that you saw with the Nelson motor in it. But, the motor is not actually going in this car. We are building another 69 Camaro with that 572 twin turbo Nelson motor in it. We are just starting the chassis and wanted to fit the motor in this Camaro to see if any changes would need to be made to the chassis or cross members for the motor and turbos to clear.

We also have a 1,300 + HP Nelson twin turbo small block in the show room that is going in a 2nd gen shortly.

Awesome. I enjoy the posts and looking around the shop.

One question off topic, can you tell me about the photo of the rear of the cobra that is on the wall in one of the views of the camaro?

Thanks,

Darren

We use a place in Janesville, WI for blasting. Can't think of the name right now. The body bushings are Energy Suspension.

We have made some great progress in the past week on the car. Passenger side quarter has been installed and modified to fit. We widened the mini-tubs and finished the install. Started on to the driver side quarter and fitment. Also fit the front end and completed the driver side inner fender.

We started by fitting the passenger side quarter and noticed that we could drive a truck between it and the door.

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/Bruce%201969%20Camaro/Picture20631.jpg

The latch pillar portion was cut off the main quarter and the quarter was then fit where it needed to go. A filler strip added to bridge the needed space.

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/Bruce%201969%20Camaro/Picture20651.jpg

Tacked in place. The door still needs some attention to finish getting the gap 100% correct.

A taller tire and lower ride height in the rear didn't give enough clearance with the standard deep tubs. The tubs were split and widened to allow for the 335 20" PS2's in the back.

We have made some serious progress in the past week while I was on the road at Good Guys Pleasanton and the Super Chevy Suspension Shoot Out. It is always good to come back from a week on the road and see a lot of progress.

Both quarters have been completely installed and both inner fenders have been completed. All of the metal work to get the car back to a solid starting point has been wrapped up, so we can now move on to the custom fabrication.

We fabbed up the louvers for the stock hood to give it a little better look.

A few shots of the new gills/ fins that will go into the quarter opening.

Started with rough cut aluminum

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/Bruce%201969%20Camaro/Picture21368.jpg

Then began cleaning up and radiusing the edges

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/Bruce%201969%20Camaro/Picture21370.jpg

Once the shape was finalized, we went back and subtly curved the pieces to match the curve of the body.

Nice to see the effort to do an old school bolt-on look. So much of the current style is to mold and smooth and blend (which is great, but this is even cooler).

We agree- we ruled out smoothing the spoiler into the body almost straight away. While it has its place, it's just not for the look of this car.

Did you build the spoiler for looks, or are you trying to achieve a more aerodynamic rear for this car?

A little more progress on the Camaro. Just finished up the fabricating the exhaust tips. Stripped and metal finished the rear bumper and finished a few loose ends on the lower valance.

Thanks for the comments! -

The header has a step on that side for manufacturing purposes. The passenger side has less back to back bends than the drivers side (which has to clear steering etc.) so is easier to do in one piece.

Chris -
I found a pic that should give you an idea: the old firewall is braced then cut, leaving a lip from the previous area which is then integrated with the overlaying new piece.
Hope that helps.

Don't worry - we will run the stock blue ones until we are done with the suspension tuning and dialing in the car, then we will replace them with red springs so we can adjust the spring rate for the best ride and handling without having to paint multiple sets of springs.

Thanks Doug. We thought about pulling molds and then offering them in glass or carbon, but time ran short and we did not have the time to send the parts off to have molds made with the completion date that we are shooting for with the car.

Time for some complete pics of this car! We debuted it at Columbus to a great reception. We were also fortunate enough to be picked for the winners circle and received a Goodguys Innovation award!

The interior we designed was completed by Steve Holcomb and turned out great. (More pics will follow) Here is the initial concept:

As promised, some interior pics!
The goal with the interior was to achieve a rally/race vibe but without the 'bare bones' feel of a full-on race car. We ran a custom dash pad with a carbon gauge cluster and dash side trim. The tach, speedo and small gauges located in the console are by Stack. Console is an OEM piece with a couple of tweaks like the hand made gauge area, carbon trim and Cobb delrin shift knob, also serves as the location for the stereo remote.

To enhance the rally/race vibe we added some touches like the dual flip switches for ignition and start and some F1 inspired rotary switches to control lights, wipers, etc. The seats are Recaro Sportsters with custom made rears to match and red Sparco harnesses to tie in nicely with the door and glovebox pulls in the same belt material. The rear package tray was also custom made to compliment the seats in the Recaro style. Door panels, rear quarter panels and headliner are all by Marquez Design and trimmed in suede and leather.

Are the valve covers custom on the car ? I couldn't tell if it was a custom milled cover or if your folks added the details to an existing cover then body worked and painted.

I found out when the plastic handle broke off and I had to go to the BMW dealer to get another one. Apparently that is a common occurence because they always keep a few in stock. I think the one I got was for an E30 something 3 series. I'm starting to think they're all the same.

Mine lasted a year or so, and I'm guessing yours didn't fair so well either.

Thanks. We wanted to give the car a race inspired interior with out it looking too "race car-ish" (if that makes any sense). i think that the few touches like the door pulls, knobs, seat belts, etc... gave it that feel without taking away from the finished street car look.

Thin coat of Paint almost likely.

Powder coat would be too thick and would effect performance of the rad.

If its an ally rad, then black anodised would best bet

Thin coat of Paint almost likely.

Powder coat would be too thick and would effect performance of the rad.

If its an ally rad, then black anodised would best bet

It is not annodized. annodized aluminum that has been welded changes it moleculary and will not annodize consistently around the welds. Paint works best and does not affect radiator performance.

Thanks guys, I kinda thought powder would be too thick.

Vince, I assure no dollar stores were visited in the building of this car.:D

Not really an update on the car, just some cool pictures...thought I would share.

We've been having some pretty 'mixed' weather over the last couple of days here in Illinois. The upside, however, is that it makes for some great photoshoot weather and evening skies - enjoy
