T56 install hit the floor due to a slight variation in the floor (you can see the fold in the metal). I needed to remove some of the welds and straighten out were the floor was hitting. I also gave that ear some plastic surgery.

Its been a while since i've updated this. I'm going to move the car into a new direction. Less "race" more "street". I want to use the car more with my family and the roll cage / no A/C and no rear seat don't help with that. I also need to do routine maintenance to the 409 and when adding the upgrades i wanted to do i came to the why bother scenario. SO.......Here is the plan.
SpeedTech Pro Touring subframe
SpeedTech LS Swap Components (Mounts, T56 Tunnel, Clutch, Oil Pan, Headers)
PSI Harness
Vintage Air
DSE Subframe connectors and firewall fill plate
AAW Classic Update
Griffin LS Radiator
Afco Heat Exchanger
RestoMod tank Duel Pump with corner pickups
Clean and paint misc small parts under the hood
Oh and of course LS swap.
First Purchase is in LSA

Part of the project was to create more room in the Garage. I have a fairly wide 2 car that is under the house. It is insulated and has easy access to the 200 amp panel. Some minor upgrades to the garage space are 100amp sub panel, 240v heater, and Pushing my 8' wide bench back 40". This makes the bench recessed into the basement more.

Thanks Curtis. My brother did stop over to help. I need to drop my fenders off to my friend who painted the car a few years ago.
The car has had 2 paint jobs / restorations
1995 - all parts were removed and painted by previous owner (family member and worked at a body shop) The quarters were not replaced and did start to rust through.
2008/2009 car was mini tubbed and the outer wheel house and quarters were repaired and painted the grey / gold combo it is today.
Since the front has not come apart since 1995 there is some surface rust that needs to be addressed. I have also found some spots in the wiring that was problem waiting to happen. I have been guilty of just adding on "upgrades" without paying attention to the other details.
This next push if frankly WAY over due.

Sounds like it needed to be done to insure years of problem free mile and smiles. Best you get into it now, before it gets out of control. Besides....these cars are never really done.

Love this build - it's looks great now, and it'll look even meaner once you have the rideheight and alignment dialed
What size tire are you planning on running? Sticking with those wheels?
Awesome car, man!
nicks67ca
02-03-2017, 06:05 AM
For now i'm sticking with those wheels. They are corvette 18" replica's which are pretty cheap. I need to recover some from the other major upgrades I'm doing. Eventually i'll probably move to the Forgestar wheels. I'm running a 265 front tire now. I'll probably keep the 265 size or move to the 275.

Got some stuff done.
DSE subframe connectors are in
Down bars are in. I decided to weld them in with a removable tube adapter and the plates welded to the firewall. I have some clean up to do still. Next is to finish the trans tunnel with the speedtech cover then power wash / steam the underside and get the whole thing ready for undercoating and firewall paint.

Car is looking great!
Just a heads up. If you ever plan to use Speedtech's torque arm setup you are likely going to have some interference between the DSE subframe connectors and the crossmember section that ties into the torque arm. It installs above the subframe where it bolts to the belly of the car.
You can notch their cross member and make it work, but I ordered mine powder coated and had to have it redone due to the interference. Not a huge deal either way but something to keep in mind.

Good to know thanks! I'm running right now the triangulated 4 link (early generation gbar). I think it will stay put for a while. I love the IRS that use the gen5 stuff but need to keep an eye on the $$$.

The Good
Mast Oil Pan fits nice
The engine fits
the steering rack clears the pan and rack.
The not so good:
Driver side header needs to be modified to make the steering connection. I know Speedtech makes a custom header but 1 primary tube modification and it will fit.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f9/nicks67camaro/header%20interference_zps7z58xfed.jpg (http://s44.photobucket.com/user/nicks67camaro/media/header%20interference_zps7z58xfed.jpg.html)
The crank pulley will interfere with the crossmember when i use the over drive LSA Pulley. The alternator is also very close. I will make pockets to fit these better.

Been working on the header modification.
There was no room to go above. Not excited about the overall length and additional bends but for now its fine. I need to pinch some pennies and not buying $1500 headers is a good thing. i'll have my buddy tig them up but should have around $550 in them once done.

Speedtech lists them on their site for around $1400 + shipping. i think summit has them for $1200.
They are beautiful but not in the budget right now.
I haven't mocked up the dirty dingo A/C yet. It looks like it will but will verify hopefully Friday.

Great project. Just wondering about the subframe motor supports you have with your Speedtech subframe. I will share Some issues I ecountered a few months back when I decided to change my oil pan.
Speedtech supplies two types of motor supports. For SBC, the motor supports length is the same on both passenger and driver side. However, with LS engine, the motor support on the driver side is a bit taller than the passenger side to shift the motor by 3/4 inch to the passenger side to allow proper fitment of rack and pinion.
So check your engine supports, if they are equel in length, it means you have the wrong supports for your application.
You could also contact Blake at Speedtech, he is very helpful and can assist you in sorting out such issues.
I am also interested in how the Dirty Dingo low mount AC will fit.
Good luck

Thanks! I did verify I have the right mounts. The header fitment is on me. I decided to use a "non" verified header combination with this frame. I wanted a 1 7/8" primary tube but didn't want to shell out the money for the full length ones speed tech offers. These are the hooker 2474HKR i purchased from Amazon for under $400 (I also had a $100 gift card) so i took the gamble on these. I knew the driver side was a long shot but it looks like it will work out.
I'm hoping to have the A/C verified today. I want to finish the fabrication stuff and get the floor and firewall finished.
Thanks Nick

I am doing the same swap in my 69 with the Speedtech sub. Do you have better pictures of what you did to get the Dirty Dingo Low Mount AC to fit? I have had the modified LSA FEAD on order since last Sept and I hope it won't require any clearancing on drivers side since it swaps the PS pump with the alternator location.
Thanks,

These are the best pictures of the interference I have. you can see there are 2 spots that come really close to the frame. It was so close that i could just barely slip on the belt onto the pulley. You can see the blue outline. I cut the 2 lines (one not shown in front of the pulley) going to the bottom of the frame and cut along the bottom just above the welds. I then used a hammer and punch to evenly move the metal back to make a pocket. I then welded it all up and ground everything smooth. I just looks like a soft pocket with smooth transitions. I'll take better pictures when i do the alternator side tomorrow. I think there may have been just enough room on the alternator side but since I got a good process i'll just make it to match the A/C side.

Its been a while! Nothing fun to post other than some scope creep.
I've been sanding a lot on the frame and firewall getting it ready to paint.
http://i67.tinypic.com/j66g68.jpg
Then i started to clean the rubberized gunk off the bottom with the plan to reapply a rubberized undercoating. Well after looking at Curtis and his nice raptor liner underside I took out my sand blaster and started hitting the trans tunnel when the gunk came off pretty easy it was all down hill from there.
I wrapped the whole thing
http://i65.tinypic.com/9a4l52.jpg
Then started blasting.
http://i64.tinypic.com/24q641z.jpg
I then started picking the last of the old seam sealer off the cowl/firewall area and found some stuff festering. This will be cleaned the best I can then my paint guy will take care of the rest.
http://i68.tinypic.com/2jdkvt3.jpg
I also scored a low mileage close ratio t56 Magnum!

As part of the effort to make the car more usable I wanted a rear seat that was more modern. This is a 2011 impreza cloth rear seat assembly. I was able to retain most of the mounting hardware with some modification. They also fold down. Here are a couple pics.
Upper section was by far the most time consuming. The main rod that allows the seat to fold needed to be shortened about 1.5" per side. I then drilled and pins the ends like subaru did to allow for the slotted bracket to fit.
http://i64.tinypic.com/143eqc.jpg
The lower section was easier. It was a basic wire frame with padding. After some manipulation i was able to get about where i wanted it. I still need to add a small platform and filler foam to help level it.

After spending what felt like an eternity on back sandblasting under the car the weather and my schedule were in agreement to spray the car with Raptor Liner.
I used the entire Upol line of Products:
1. 2002 Panel Wipe
2. Acid 8 Etching primer (no sanding needed)
3. Adhesion promoter (I'll use for touch up hard spots)
4. Raptor liner black
5. Adjustable gun sold separately (better than the supplied one)
6. Upol seam sealer - Probably my least favorite product used i feel like the 3m fast and firm stuff spreads better. I used it since it was all made to work together
I am really happy with it. If you want a finer texture you must buy the other gun. I am so glad I did. I have one or two spots that need a touch up but it came out better than i thought. I'm glad I took the extra time to do this.
Primer - The trans tunnel is ugly not my best work but its welded good, clean, and functional.

Well its been a while since my last update but progress is made. In the quest for power i wanted to make sure not one component was over powering another. Typical builds with LSA are big pulley and cam. While that is still the plan all that extra boost and cam won't do any good unless it get in and out head easier. So.....FED did their stage 2 cnc work with Manley stainless 2.180″/1.600″ intake and exhaust valve combination. This also includes their PAC spring kit. Cam will likely be BTR stage 3. My goal is 750-800 crank which seams pretty attainable without over boosting the crap out supercharger. The blower case and snout will be enlarged like most builds to help air flow. Car should be delivered this week to my paint guy to finish the firewall and frame.

Slow progress,
Cam Swap done, mast pan is on, ATI damper is on, supercharger case is getting ported.
Once the case is back i can put the rest of the engine together.
Clean everything. The Mast pan had remnants of the sand from casting.

Thanks! For the price and the flow its hard to beat. they have incredible customer service and a really nice product.
the goal was to over drive the lsa blower but not to the ragged edge. The head flow and cam swap will all work very well together.

Firewall came out great. That's a nice set of heads for sure. Who ported the blower for you? I have a BTR stage 3 in my LSA, the way it looks you'll be running before me. You'll need to post a video so we can hear it.

Thanks! It was a combination of me and a couple friends. We set the blower up in a mill and hogged it out then by hand blended the contours. The snout and injector bosses were all done by hand. All in all it was probably 12 hours of work and ton of cutting, but the difference is dramatic. I went with the JRE rough idle cam which has very close specs to the BTR3. The decision was purely based on JRE doing the tuning since they are local to me. If I have a it dyno tuned by Thanksgiving i'll be happy.

been moving forward....I have been wiring the car. I wanted everything loomed and clean and accessible.
Engine in.
http://i66.tinypic.com/33mob9k.jpg
I used a C&R universal radiator with oil cooler. I made my own mounting bracket and running a spal fan with DCC PWM fan control.
http://i68.tinypic.com/118g3k1.jpg
need to move around some wires but here are some of the looms everything is wrapped, taped, i used a combination of zip ties and plastic ring clamps that attached into bolt holes
http://i68.tinypic.com/6eoqkn.jpg
I have the VA condenser in. I will need to modify the hood latch and support to clear the supercharger hx. The ac dryer will need to be moved as well. I will also tape the core off and paint the sides and tab black. then lightly paint the core to help black it out.

I have questions about the dyno results. Your numbers seem low based on you changing heads, cam and a ported blower. I mean, you're putting down cam only with over driven blower numbers. With a ported blower and those heads you should be closer to or over 700.

Yes, I left some on the table. I am only running a 9.5" lower with a stock upper (23% OD) pulley. I'm also running a ported 90mm vs 102mm and i'm running a 4" intake tube not a 5". I wasn't looking for peak power I wanted a solid street car. Plus the last pull was cooled down but still warm from earlier pulls.

So I had a hiccup with a rocker arm. The tip on the intake broke. I think it was just a mfg defect. My valve springs, pushrods, and valves were all checked again and no issues. Not sure when it happened (before or after dyno) but it was long enough for a groove to wear in. I ended up upgrading to the Yella Terra rocker arms.
Broke!
