View Full Version : Fender clearance problems

I have airride on my 68 camaro but I only have a couple of millimeters clearance to the edge of my fender. I already cut the edge of the fender and took a piece out of the inner fender(see pictures).

I am afraid that, if my wheels are not in the straigt line position, the fenders will bent when I put the airride in the "low" position.

I know that wheels with a larger back spacing(mine are Intro's RAM 5 with 4.5") will solve a lot but there is no shop over here(The Netherlands) who can do that.

Any other suggestions?

I saw this at Airride's Velocity:

Please help.

What size tire are you running?

4.5" backspacing is the biggest part of your problem. You might be able to bandaid it by running a 225 or 215 if you are running the more typical 245 tire. Though if you are running a 245 tire chances are you have an 8" wheel...

The other thing you can try is increasing your negative camber but if you run the car low enough even that wont help.

I am running 235/40/18's on an 8 inch wheel.

I think I am going to try the Airride's Velocity solution......That gives me more negative camber right?

The velocity pic you posted just shows the alignment. Rather than a shimpack they used those custom spacers for a cleaner finish.

Yes you add more negative camber by adding shims to the upper control arm which effectively moves the arm towards the center of the car. Lots of negative camber will wear out your tires proportionatley faster if you only drive on the street.

EDIT: Have you done anything to modify the suspension geometry? Such as the G-mod? If not then you car will add postive camber as you lower it or the suspensino compresses (pushing the top of the tire outwards). Fixing that and adding 1* negative static camber may fix your clearence issue with the outer fender.

I did not do te Gulstrand mod. I have a set of other 18 x 8 inch wheels(Boze Speedster) with 5 inch back spacing. This will help but just a little bit.

I think I will do 1 inch of negative camber just like the Airride Velocity.
