I'm getting ready to make new power steering lines for my DSE rack.....with my old set up I used the Aeroquip high pressure power steering hose but have always hated the fact that its blue.... the rest of my lines are black, so it sticks out like sore thumb...

Does anyone know of a good "cut to fit and add non-crimp ends" PS hose that comes in black?

All I can find is the silver braided stainless stuff....which once again wont match ANY of my other lines in the car....

I looked when I made mine and couldn't find any. I finally decided that it wasn't that big a deal to have steel. Taping off the ends and giving it the krylon touch really wouldn't be a bad option either.

we put heat shrink tube over braided Teflon on a lot of power steering and fuel line applications and seems to work well.

Since its a cloth like material on the outside, I though about getting some black carpet dye spray cans.....

With that hose you still use the re-useable type fittings.... just like the Aeroquip. If you go to their tech section, it shows them installing the ends on that type of hose.b Thats the hose they used on Offroad 4x4...

No one seems to make a black hose with a braided outer sleeve.....its all smooth..... but at least with these you dont have to have crimp on fittings. All the other high pressure black hose I've found only use crimp on

I'm not sure what kinds of operating pressure you are working with. But Russell has the ProClassic black braided hose. Its rated to 350psi, -30 to+300 deg. F. and is available in various sizes up to -12AN (about 11/16") And uses AN fittings made for that specific hose. (they are also black anodized)

I found it in the Summit catalog.

For the pressure side you'll want at LEAST 1500psi. My pump drives 1450psi. On another note, I could tell you some stories about Russell and power steering fittings..... Suffice it to say there are no more Russell fittings anywhere on my car. Just removed the last one on Friday.

XRP has a blue and a black power steering hose that use steel reusable ends.

Ned on the high pressure side, as already mentioned you would want 1400-1500 PSI minimum

You can get lines made to length at any hydraulic service shop and they will also have 90 or 45 degree fittings, etc to make an assembly that fits exactly how you want it.

It's not as expensive and troublesome as it sounds....Hydraulic lines get munched on a daily basis in the construction/agriculture biz and these guys know how to make up hoses.

Thats good to know.

I had no idea the PS system ran that kind of pressures. I guess I never really thought about it.

You should tell us. i have all Russell fittings and hose on my car.
i user tthe proflex black on all the return sides and their braided powersteering hose on the one pressure hose, i have had no issues other than one fitting that seems to weap ever so slightly. we have used Russell in the shop for 10 years and never had a problem???

Oh except that the proflex black hoes when used in a fuel system "SEEMS" to let the fuel smell through the hose ?? you only notice it when you park the car in a small garage

I was going to send you to Woodward, but when I went to their website their "new" racks come with blue 2000 psi hoses -- my Woodward rack came with all black lines. The link below takes you to their site and the extract below is a discussion of why they changed hoses. Hope this helps.

Extract from link above:

High Pressure Hose PTFE core, stainless braid, soft cover Woodward Power Racks are now equipped with a new -6 hose rated for 2000 PSI working pressure. This hose replaces our former cloth-covered 1500 PSI hydraulic hose and its reusable type ends (shown at right for comparison).
IMPORTANT: There are many different brands of hose and reusable hose ends now in circulation, most of which are mutually incompatible. Because it can be difficult to tell them apart, racers in a hurry have been known to create mismatched hose assemblies from spare components. These may appear correct but can come apart under pressure. To prevent accidental mismatched field assemblies, WE USE ONLY PERMANENT CRIMP-TYPE ENDS ON OUR HPB6 PRESSURE HOSE. Although this hose conforms to the nominal standard dimensions of -6 stainless-braid PTFE hose, it also has an
abrasion-reducing fabric cover. The cover precludes the use of screw-on ends (the kind with a brass “olive”) which are intended only for uncovered stainless braid. Permanent ends are the ONLY type approved for use with this hose. Crimp tooling data will be made available to qualified hose shops on request.
