I just don't have it in me to come up with anything more clever today. Some of you may know of my car and others may not. I have not posted anything about my car in a long time, so I guess it is about time to let the cat of of the bag. (OK that was a little clever)
I have owned the car for 18 years and it the second restoration has been complete for about 3 years. It is the normal pro-touring affair with leafs and a slight tub running C6 rim and tire package. I have been wanting to upgrade to a different rear suspension and tire package for a couple of years. I have actually had the rims for a year and a half sitting in my attic. I finally started the transformation after Run Through The Hills last year. The car went to Holohan's Hot Rod Shop (www.holohanshotrods.com )on Jan 1st of this year. The good news is I am about 4 weeks away to having the car back together and driving which means I have been saving pics for months and you will not have to follow this thread long to see the build.
Here is what I am starting with

So, as you can tell by the title I am going to be installing Jake's Torque Arm rear suspension. I will be running a watts link and also changing the rear end to a Moser full floater. The rims are HRE C21's that I purchased off of the Corvette Forum in C6ZO6 sizes. 19x12.5 in the rear with a 335/30/19 and the fronts are 18x9.5 with 275/35/18 Nitto NTO5's.
My computer is acting up and freezing so I will post more pictures tomorrow.
Thanks for the kind words above. Y'all are replying before I can get my post completed. LOL

I am ready to try this again. I think I am going to write text and then post pictures as when I tried to do both yesterday it was freezing up.
For those of you that do not know who Dan Holohan is, he use to work for Troy at Rad Rides and then went to DSE for 3 years. Opened up his own shop a year ago and it filled up quickly. He just took over the space next door. For a brief moment I thought about doing the re-tub and torque arm install myself, but with limited space, skills and 2 boys 11 and 8, it was too much for this old dude. Dan's work is some of the best I have ever seen and has proved it on my car. Look him up at www.holohanshotrods.com Not sure if he has them up or not but he has maybe 500 pictures of this build. I have 260 and will try to post plenty but not so much that it is boring.
First up is the mini-tub. When the car was originally built I only tubbed it over about 1.5 inches to clear the 285's I was running. Big mistake, now I have to take a completed car and cut it up to make room for the 335's. I hate when tires rub, so Dan actually widened the DSE tubs. Now for the pics

Payton,
You'll enjoy this. When my JRS setup arrived, the box that my axle housing was in had your name on it. I called Jake all worried that he had somehow swapped our housings, but he assured me it was just an issue of picking a random box to rehouse it after the brackets were attached. :)
Wish I was as far along as you, but I can't wait to get this JRS stuff under a car and on the road!

What's the reason for widening the DSE tubs? And did you have to modeify the frame rails any differently than the way DSE does for the standard mini-tubs?

That looks killer Payton.. you're making a great car even better!
Leaving the underside yellow?
Payton King
06-27-2011, 11:57 AM
I am leaving the bottom yellow. I like the contrast with the black suspension and polished look of the exhaust. Going to do the gas tank black but leave the stainless straps.
I wanted plenty of room in the wheel well is why we widened them. Running a 12.5 rim and the 335's is close to 14 inches from tire bulge. I think I have 15.5 inches now at the closest point. We did get into the frame deeper, Dan plated it up so we would no loose any strength.
It took me years to decide on the color of yellow that I wanted. It is Dodge Viper Racing Yellow sprayed on a white sealer/base.

So I will try and speed it up.
Everybody knows about the pad knockback problems when you really start leaning on a 9 inch with fixed calipers and sealed bearings. Since I was upgrading the rear suspension and was going to need to shorten my present 9 inch, I opted to kill 2 birds with one stone and sprang for a full floater from Moser. I got the DB floater (dual bolt pattern 5x4.75 and 4.5) The center register on that rear is the standard Ford 3.06. I had Moser turn it down to 2.78 (standard Chey) so my wheels would fit.
My next challenge was that I wanted to keep an emergency brake. Jake and I discussed it and came up with the idea to use my existing intergrated emergency brake used with my Wilwoods and make a mount to bolt the assembly on the housing. Jake then machined my existing hats to mount to the floater hub. Very easy retro-fit, but it will not work with a high negative offset wheel. It worked on mine because my rim has around 8 inches of backspacing. Plenty of room for the brakes and not get into trailing arm brackets or shocks.
Another way to solve the e-brake issue is to have a custom rotor adaptor made if you are running a 13 inch or larger rotor, and use a seperate caliper.

I am about to go on vacation. I cannot remember if I have ever taken a full week off since I have gotten out of college and into the real world. I am going to try and get a bunch of pics posted.
Here is a lesson I have learned more than a few times over the course of owning this car for 18 years...nothing ever goes on the way it is supposed to fit. Jake's Torque Arm is designed to fit under a stock trunk pan and be a very easy and non-invasive install, one of the many reasons I went with his system. Not on my car, running a drop version of the 21st Century subfame and half height DSE bushings, my car is lower than most. When we positioned the rear end housing where it needed to be located in the car at ride height and using the ride height length of the shocks...we were in the trunk a couple of inches with the watts/shock mount. Great, break out the cutting wheel.

It's why they call it hot rodding.... I have to "hot rod" almost every part I ever touch. No two parts (other than OEM) seem to ever go together without a touch or two.

Sounds like you're sinking the set up pretty deep in the car. I'd look for tunnel/pinion clearance issues with your pinion angle set and at fulll bump.

I had the leafs on before with lowering blocks, my rear axle tubes hit the rear frame rails at the same time my drive shaft hit the tunnel. My front trans angle was set at zero. We (Dan) remade my trans cross member and dropped it about an inch to give us a little more room. The suspension will bottom before the axle tubes hit the frame rails now. Should not have a problem with the drive shaft hitting the tunnel.
From the pictures it appears I am deeper into the trunk than I actually am, maybe an inch or so. At ride height we have 3 inches of compression and 2 inches of rebound...5 inch stoke shock. Axle tube is 3.5 to frame rail.
Greg, the time does fly. I look in the mirror sometimes and think, how did that happen. I always said I would never get married or have kids and now it has been 18 years and I have 2 boys 11 and 9.

Nice looking setup
What about the pinion support/adj bars. They look like they might hit the rear seat tubs if you get much lower. Mine did. I had to cut reliefs in the floor to make room... which sucked since the primary reason for getting the torque arm was to keep from having to cut into the floor. Its prob not a prob for you though seeing that it was made for a Camaro. Mine was made for a Mustang (TCI kit) and was being installed in a Maverick.

factory C6Z06 back spacing so it would be easy to order wheels or pick up a set used off of corvette forum...ie another set of track wheels

Time to fab up the exhaust. With the new torque arm, we had to re-make everything from the mufflers back and did some tweaking up front. As you will see from the following pics, there was no room for the tail pipes. Dan went up and over the watts and further into the trunk.

The watts only went into the trunk a couple of inches and then we had to route the exhaust through there. So, the center part is up about 2 inches and the part over the exhaust is about 6 inches.
Oh, I am a big ol' bear. Did not plan on getting this deep, but who ever does? Trunk pics will be up today.

Hey Guys,
Glad you guys like the work. Doing that kind of work is definately a challenge but having a good project owner like Payton makes a guy want to do his best.
Probably the most challenging thing working on a project like this is that's it's a painted, running car, a very nice painted running car! So being careful is half the battle and the other half was trying to figure out how to get my old, half blind butt in and out of that trunk. Had it pretty much down to a science before it was done, but did almost get stuck once.
Legs hanging out the trunk, pedal bewteen my knees and my head stuck with my helmet on, under the package tray, but did mange to get out after a lot of grunting and talking to myself......
Again, glad you like the work and thanks for the kind words......

Yup....
W/silicon (note, there's no "e") bronze rod, It is not unlike gas brazing. You are simply using a different method of providing the heat.

I decided I did not want to use the poly bushings and I was not hip to the heim joints, so I took JP;s advice and used the sphoon ends. Very nice piece but they are large, which made us modify the bracket on the housing and do a little work in the pocket. Turned out nice

the width is extremely close to a stock 69. 59 inches and I am running small spacers on each side to dial in the exact spacing (1/4 to 1/2). I can get the the measurement of my spacers this week for a total width. Rims are 19x12.5 with a +53 mm offset.

Had one in there before and with the trunk change, the old box will not fit. I still keep telling myself this is a pro-touring car and not a race car. I debated long and hard whether to put one back in the car. About 60 lbs of box, sub and amp. Then I figured that an extra 60 lbs is not going to make or break any time I lay down at any track.
You are right, the car is so loud I did not have enough power or the right gear to really hear it when I was cruising. I have 800w going to a new 10 inch sub now...should be able to hear it (for short periods)
There is a 90% chance that I will make the box/sub and amp removable as a unit for when I am feeling really racy. More to come on that later

Here are few updates. Recessed the fuel regulator in the tank and had it coated black. Rest of the stuff is in the car and waiting on some fittings for the calipers to clear the shocks.

I am so close. Really looking forward to getting it out and see how it drives. I thought my car before was sprung too light, so I have this one set on kill. I know the spring rates will work great on the big track, but it may be too much for the street. 700 lbs in front and 550 lbs in rear. May need to drop the rear to 500 lbs.

Not sure why I spend so much time making the bottom of my car so nice when it sits so low, the only time you see it when it is up in the air. With everything painted and coated, it does make it easy when I get around to wiping it down.

Damn! One of the best looking yellow cars. Those rims really set the car off.

Was not really thinking I was going to have to do as much work as it took. I am really ready to drive. Taking Thursday and Friday off to get this thing on the road. The problem I have is I just can't seem to put it back the way it was...always reworking or upgrading.
I will report back on the driving impressions. It has been since mid-October since I have driven the car, so this should be a real treat with the new rubber, rear suspension and new shocks on all 4 corners.

It was a thrash getting the car back on the road for RTTH 7. Seems like there is always something. When I took it out for its maiden voyage, I knew right away that something was not right. The shocks were not where close in controlling the springs...I was running 700 lbs front and 550 lbs rear. Good thing about living in Charlotte is there are a lot of race stuff around. Bilstein is here, so I pulled them off and ran them up to have them checked. One was completely out of gas, valving was too light for spring rates. They gave me a pair of safety glasses and I proceeded to get an education on shock design. Mike revalved all 4 shocks on the spot and ran them on the shock dyno, it was quite an afternoon.
Got them back on the car and went down on spring rate to 550 front and 325 rear. It was a night and day difference in the car. I am running them in the middle setting and my 69 rides better than my wife's M3. What a difference the correct shock makes.
I did make RTTH but had only put 5 miles on the car before it hit the parking lot for the autocross school that I had signed up for at the event. I was getting use to the car and was getting faster every run I made. It was a little tight and I had a small mechanical issue the first day. I had Danny Pop make a 2 laps for his feedback. 2nd lap in my car that he has never driven knocked 2 seconds off of my best run. The car is capable, the driver is not.
Fixed the small problem, raised the watts one hole to free the car up and aired the tires down to 28 psi hot for the next day. Again every run I got faster and ended up running 12th out of 86 cars and missed the top 10 by .4x. A little more time getting use to the car and would have like to try some shock settings, I think I could have gotten there.
All in all a completely different car with the torque arm, shocks and new/better tires. My hat is off to Dan and his wonderful fab work and a well thought out rear suspension design from Jake.

That thing looks so good with those new wheels. Night and day. People always say wheels make or break the car, but sometimes you just have to see it to believe it. Well done.
And did I read you originally had 550 lb rear springs? Wow that is insanely high is it not?
And you're absolutely right .... 98% of the cars on this site need tons more work on the driver, not the car!

When Jake was racing his 69 he tried a number of different springs at the track. He likes the way 700 lbs front and 500 rear felt the best. Vinnie bought Jake's old car and he is going to Optima runnng 700/500 combo. That set up is really for the big track more than autocross, but it still works well at either. That yellow corvette going to Optima was running a 1200 front 900 rear at VIR this summer. 2 schools of thought, heavy springs lighter bar or vice versa. Ron, with the blue mustang, just got either a 650 or 900 lbs spring for the front of his. Can't remember the exact rate. You will still needs shocks that can contol that high of a rate.
When I go back to a road course, I will run the 700 up front and 450's in the rear because that is what I happen to have sitting in my garage and tune from there. The ride is actually not bad at all with the higher rates, I think you would be suprised of how it rides and the feedback you get.
The only problem I see with the higher rates is I am losing a little bit of rebound travel at ride height. I have heard that most run a short light spring (150lbs) in conjunction with the heavy spring to get ride height correct.

Is that 350 per side in the front and 225 per side in the rear?

When I write about rates, that is per coil over/wheel.

Payton, just found this thread--can't believe I haven't seen it until now. Man, you went all out----congrads on the success thus far! Car is beautiful and I love those mods. That was quite a commitment to tear into it with such a nice paint job on it---props to you for that. Sounds like you are really happy with it and that is great to hear. I bet it feels great to have it running again and knowing that you've made the mods you wanted to make. New wheels look great on the car to bro. Amazing attention to detail on it in all respects. Hope to make one of the RTTH events out your way sometime to meet you and see the car in person.

I actually drove it to work yesterday. Spent 20 minutes talking to people about it when I drove it to lunch.
Really did not plan to go as deep as I did, but once you start down that road it is a slipery slope. Goodguys is here this weekend, along with an open house at Dan's shop and one at DSE. Should have plenty of things to keep me busy.
Funny that you would say that you would like to come out to RTTH. I was thinking I would like to go to RTTC. Not sure if my body could take 3 days of driving in a 69 and I would need to wear ear plugs.

They have not called so I am going to guess nothing serious. It have been there for a month with 2 more to go on my agreement. Not sure if I will extend if after 90 days it is not sold. I am having withdrawls not driving. If it sells there will be a new track car in my future. If is does not, the stereo is coming out along with the front and rear seats...think track car with a painted undercariage. LOL
Still waiting on your re-birth as well

Payton,
Do you mind me asking where you have the car? I'm assuming from your comments that it's at a consignment shop, and I'm also assuming it's close to Charlotte? We are still trying to decide what to do with the 57 Chevrolet, and I have spoke to one of the places around Charlotte (AutoBarn I think it was). I don't recall them having a 90-day requirement though...
Thanx!

RK Motors of Charlotte.
If it does not sell on this go around, it will not go back up on the blocks. May even make the trip out for RTTC next year and make Ron bring his mustang as well.
