There are several OE Ford rears available at my local wrecking yard. All under $100.00
Some in trucks, some in cars (including a 63 galaxy 4 dr.)

Can anyone tell me which one of the factory 9" assemblies would be best to start with?
Or what key things I should look for in choosing one?
Thanks for any info!

The fact that they are $100 ea. and one is in a Galaxy 4dr makes me think they are 8" housings NOT 9". They look VERY similar.

They might be? I am a total rookie when it comes to those.
There are several mid to late 60s trucks with what look like 9" housings.
Is there a quick way to tell them apart without opening them up?

The pricing is just how that yard works. Flat prices on everything (short blocks...$85.00, long blocks....$100.00 , trannys 80.00, rear diffs $90.00)
All engines are the same. I was behind a guy who paid $234.00 for a complete 5.4L Ford Expedition motor, efi system, all accy's and drive system, flexplate, and wiring harness with ecm. His buddy got the tranny and transfer case for another $170.00.
Its a "pull it yourself" yard. I keep waiting for a LS motor to show up. Lol!

Also when looking for a rear end some of the housings have tapered tubes. Thats what you want.

They also come like this. Tubes usually aren't as thick and not as strong as above.

So what flange to flange measurement is needed to tuck 315s with a mini tub?

There has been a ton of discussion on this subject. Use the search bar above and start reading. You should be able to find your answer pretty easy. If I knew I would tell you. I do know it will depend on your wheels and the offset in them.
If you can't find the answer through a search, or need to order wheels then determine overall width, call Jon or Justin at Driverzinc. They can set you up with everything you need to fit correctly. Good luck.

Sean, as others mentioned, there are many, many things to consider when deciding on axle width and the first should be can you and should you minitub? It sounds like you are new to this hobby? Do you know what all has to happen to do a mini-tub?

Let's say you do, you need to be sure that the 315's will fit and not rub when going through a hard corner. How much clearance do you need? That depends on suspension - springs, sway bars, bushings, panhard bar... and how hard it will be cornered.

So once you get past the suspension, brakes come into play. Drums and discs will require different clearances at the frame rail.

Next, what are you willing to pay for wheels? If you stay with what is off the shelf, then you will need to design the axle width around the offsets that come with the wheel. If you are going to custom order your wheels, you have a little more option here.

The other important thing about the wheels is the width. The same tire may fit on a 8 1/2 wheel and a 9 inch but the side wall of the tire will get wider or narrower which again will affect clearance.

One of the easiest ways to approach this would be to copy someone elses set up. No two cars will be the same. Doing your homework here is important.

Feel free to PM me as I just got through all of this on my Skylark
