Back from media blasting... or what was left of it anyways! The lack of solid metal left on the car eventually gave way to letting the ideas flow on what would eventually be done to the body. Since almost everything had to be re-made, we might as well add our own style to it. More on that to come:unibrow:

We set out to build a car that would perform as good as it looks, and look as good as it performs. The foundation for the car is one of our Fast Track chassis systems. Here are a few pics of the chassis on a frame table for the build to begin

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/Innovator/9.jpg

We built a custom 3-Link on this car and made custom main rails that allowed for a side exhaust.

Nice & tight packaging of the Watts linkage setup. How how much bell crank travel / lateral housing movement is designed in?

Great looking project.

I know there has been lots of discussion on chassis vs axle mounted watts bellcrank, but why did you decide to do it that way?

In a perfect world I feel a chassis mounted bell crank would be the ideal setup, mounting the bell crank in a fixed position to the chassis would allow the rear roll center to move up and down as the suspension goes through its travel. With the bell crank fixed to the rear end housing you do not get the same roll center movement, yet I still feel there are performance improvements over a conventional panhard bar. We offer them in both configurations but due to packaging issues we built this particular car with the pivot fixed to the rear end housing.

In order to get the look and stance that we were after, we altered the wheel base and moved the rear wheels back 1.5". (This was done from the start in the chassis design.) Here are the wheel houses fabbed to clear the 20x12's the Innovator will be running out back.

On to the body of the car. One of the things that we didn't like about the Nova body style was the main body line running through the center of the car. So, we eliminated it and decided on something that we felt fit the theme of the car better. The new look would have a sharp body line trailing off of each wheel opening. It was not an easy undertaking, but made a huge difference in the end. In order to create the new body lines we cut the lower 2/3rds of the fender, door, and quarter panel off and scratch built new sections.

The original section of the door skin next to the new version

The quarters were next. We first installed a new quarter panel ince the original was long gone. Then we laid out the new body line, wheel opening, and re-shaped the lower section of the quarter behind the wheel.

Another item on the cut list was the roof line of the car. Stock 66/67 Nova's tend to look like the roof is running uphill from back to front. A subtle 3/4" chop in the front along with leaning the A pillars, and pie cutting the sail panels took care of that and gave it a subtle change.

Sitting next to a stock Nova you can make out the difference in the roof line. I have better pictures some where that I will dig up showing this better.
http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/Innovator/Chop6.jpg

The drip rails were also eliminated and added in a body line in their place so it wasn't a totally smoothed look.

Fab work on the hood:

We really liked the way the flat hood looks on these cars and wanted to keep that feel, but add some detail to it.

We again removed the body line from the center of the hood to give it a cleaner look than stock. We fabbed 2 air boxes that fit in the corner of the hood and remain flat when the hood is opened.

There is actually a lot of room there. The bottoms of the inner fenders are not attached to anything in these pics and are way closer to the motor than they will be when completed.

We leave all cars in bare metal through out the build process. While under construction we generally use just a scuff pad to keep the metal clean. When the car is ready for body work we spend a lot of time metal prepping the entire care to make sure that all rust and traces of it are gone.

It is way too early for that! There is going to be a pretty serious showing of cars this year from what I have heard. We'll be happy to make it in the top 5.

We really try to build each car better than the previous one. You learn a lot on each build that can be applied to the next one. We have a very motivated/competitive crew of guys that always tries to one up themselves and build something better than they just did.

I'd like to clarify something. I apologize for calling the RS shop "Roger." I guess I confused the two with Ironworks. Phil, your work is top-notch and superb. Didn't mean to call you by the wrong name. Maybe I got that name from Ironworks or maybe not, shoood...I don't know. Not to discredit Ironworks in any way. I just read so many threads on here and confused the names, not the shops. Both shops are grand shops and are excellent builders in my book and would love to meet each of you some day. RS, again I apologize. Good luck on the Nova at Columbus. I know it will the cat's meow.

I think RS wanted the first showing of the completed car to be at GG Columbus. The pics of the build process may have been just for us and our pleasure as Lateral-g members. Most builds of the status are kept under wraps until it debuts. Just think...if a car is going to compete for SMOTY and other various, top honor awards and you let too much of your build get out, then the competiton knows exactly what to do to have a leg up on you and beat you. Just my opinion though.

Thanks again to everyone for all of your support and great comments on the build! It has been great reading all of the posts that you have made in response to our work. As I said in another post, this year was an extremely top notch field of cars. Winning the SMOTY Award among such a high level of competition is an incredible honor! The rest of the top 5 cars were some of the finest pro-touring cars ever built, and there were probably another 5 cars that were worthy of top 5 recognition.

Looking back, the 15+ hour days and the obstacles that we had to overcome were definitely worth it. We couldn't be happier with the way the car turned out, and the reception that it has received. A huge thanks goes out to all of my guys in the shop for doing what needed to be done to complete a car to this level in a short 13-14 month time frame.

Thanks again,
Phil

FANTASTIC car build!

If Steve's Auto Restorations would have built my car so it ran and drove fine without all the headaches.... I'd have been happy to allow them a couple of typos on a label that can be changed in a nanosecond.

Yeah.... about that.... Our graphic designer is from Scotland, so that might have something to do with the spelling error. That and the fact that they were done at 3:00 AM at the end of a 15-hour day. But hey, we are hot rod builders not grammar experts. It is not the first spelling mistake ever made and I'm sure that it won't be the last. Thanks for pointing that out though; we will have a new set on the car tomorrow.
