Always lots of good stuff on Lateral-G! Thanks to everyone for posting your projects.

I'll call the project "On Target". Attempting to stay on target with level of build, ability, time in the shop, with family, and $ input. It can be a challenge to balance what we want and not getting out of control in other areas. All of us have a different mix and level in all these areas. That is what makes everyones car unique.

Started with a 49,000 mile '62 Chevy II. Have been modifying something for the last 15 years and keeping driveable most summers. Kind of a test mule. Changing is part of the process and interest. Swapped in an LT1 - 4L60E back in 2001. Went with automatic to make it easier for our boys to make a few drag strip passes. Has run a 12.88 e.t. in 1/4 mile. Mini tubbed a few years later, A/C another year, etc, etc.. The last year and a half have totally stripped it apart and refreshing everything along with some modifications.

Will post a few early pics and current status. Later will start listing some steps getting here and current updates.

Have wanted to post it on here for a long time, but was out in the shop trying to keep the project moving forward or watching other super projects on Lateral-G. Better get in on here before the car is done.

Thanks again for putting your neat stuff on here. Jim

Here's after original engine swap, mini tub and before blowing apart for redo.

In primer at the Hot Rod Super Nationals in Lincoln Nebraska 2010 at Hot Rods by Todd booth. Todd's spraying the paint and giving body prep assistance. Plus tons of advice in how to do it right in body and paint prep, techniques, materials etc, etc, etc. In addition Todd has instilled motivation to step it up to a higher level of finish than originally planned with just fresh paint and a color change. Thanks Todd!! Check him out at Hot Rods by Todd on the hubgarage.com.

This body style always has a spot in my heart... back in high school my buddy (now my brother in law) had one... 283 4 speed car... used a copper toilet bowl float for a shift handle. He had a job - I had a drivers license... and that was about it... he'd work - I'd borrow the Nova and bring it back with the tank bone dry - we'd fill 'er up and spend the rest of the summer night cruising. Good times in that car... lots of good memories.

Your car looks GREAT! Keep posting the progress!

Greg, your right on "lots of good memories" All of us have memories of cars we or someone else had and all we did with them. A lot of us either have or want some of those "memory" cars. That's why we ended up with this Chevy II.
Here's a pic of another Chevy II had back in the mid 70's.

You've got a sweet ride there. Thats a great idea on the inside of the door. What size is your garage? I'm thinking of putting a beam in for a trolley like you have, what did you do to support it?
The paint looks great.

Garage is 24' x 32', never big enough. Did did use storage trusses. That's getting full of junk (good stuff) up there, and keeps stuff out of the work space.
Trolley is supported above with a long pipe running crosswise to the trusses.
Thanks, Jim

The LT1 had the internals all freshened and a ZZ4 cam installed when the motor was originally swapped in 2001. This time is an external freshening up and mounting A/C compressor and alternator.

Do I wish it was a LS motor - OH YEAH! But for this car staying with the LT1 was part of the staying "On Target" and not letting my wants override where I should be.

Besides this thing has run quicker at the track than some LS powered cars. Plus a couple of Foose built Riddler cars used a LT1/LT4 - the Grand Master and Stallion. (Just trying to talk myself into being content. Do I still want a LS set up, yep.)

Anyway, staying On Target for your build may be a LS7, DSE/Roadster Shop chassis etc. Whatever it is, don't settle for less. Just keep us posted on Lateral-G !

500 hp and 500 tq is just that regardless of what made it.... I seem to have to explain that over and over to people that don't get it. Especially on the oft asked question - "Why didn't you put a Ford in your Ford?". LS motors are the latest greatest darling... and they're super nice motors... and they're LIGHTER than the same HP/TQ SBC... so they have some pluses.

I spend a LOT of time at my buddies dyno. Funny what you hear about motors and stuff hanging around like that. One of the things Rick and I always shake our heads about - and people don't ever discuss etc -- is the RATE at which a motor increases in RPMs per second. A motor that is really wingin' it has an amazing rate of increase... We've laughed at other motors where the combo just isn't on the money... and while they "made the number" the owner is looking for... they'll get their asses handed to them racing. It's why my 406 old skool motor was built using the Honda rod journal size crank. Yeah it's 406 ci - but the snap this motor has compared to a 406 with more rotational mass will just blow you away. Everyone always just wants to talk heads and cam. It's more than that...:D

Just sayin' - nothing wrong with the LT motor... built right.

Taking it to the Hot Rod Super Nats this Fri-Sat-Sun in Lincoln, NE. Was in a shell with primer last year at Hot Rods by Todd's booth. This year will have fresh paint and a big chunk of assembly done to show progress for the booth this year.

1st time out of the garage today. Actually drove a few test miles. Boy was that a blast after being apart for a couple years. Although there's still lots of finish/assembly to go. Still planning to post some process pics prior to getting to this stage.

Pushed it out of the garage about midnight tonight getting ready to load for Lincoln. Actually drove it out with open headers. Bet the neighbors liked that :unibrow:

A little more on backing the car out at midnight and getting some pics.

All day had been getting the car able to move under its own power. Test drive went super. Although, apparently the alternator pulley was never tightened and the nut had backed partly off throwing the serpentine belt. Nothing damaged though. To the parts store and picked up a fresh belt. A little loctite and tighten the pulley nut this time. That's why they call it a test drive.

The stance can be critical and the new front coil springs were in need of trimming to obtain it. Over years of changes the springs have been in & out, cut more times than I can remember. So I'm an expert in how much to cut off. Springs were cut and back in by 10pm that night. As soon as the jack is let down I'm saying "oh no" or something like that. Didn't want to trim a little, remove, trim a little more. So run it out the door to settle the suspension and take a look. Like how the fender tucks over the tire. But below the car will have some clearance issues. Won't need much higher but still will need a little. Well better get another set of front coils coming. Need a new set of super drop coils?

The rear should come down just a bit after the trunk is loaded down with coolers, lawn chairs and everything else. Still should end up with a nice rake from front to rear when done. Thanks for liking the stance so far! This is just a little of what we all go through to get things just right.

I'm confused....

I was pretty sure you just painted this car red and had it on the ground and running... So is this just a "catch up" group of photos for the motor install??

Thanks Greg, I can see how it would be confusing with bouncing around with these photos. The latest engine install group of pics are a "catch up" group.
I didn't start posting this project until the car was quite a ways along. Just didn't take crunch time to figure the posting pictures and stuff till later.

Here's a general time line on the car:
Final primer on body then final color in engine compartment sprayed last fall.
Engine was installed earlier this year.
Sprayed the exterior red on body just mid April.
Sanded the clear coat mid May. Most of buffing done up to May 25.
Car is running and just able to drive on May 26.

Here's generally what needs done:
Front fenders are still off the car. Fenders on in pics were just hanging on.
All the weather stripping needs installed (other than front & rear glass - Steele Rubber used has had a super fit so far.)
All the side glass/mechanisms are still out.
All the Aluminum trim -grill, rear, side, front needs to be refinished.
Need to install sound control material to interior.
Interior other than dash, all needs done. Still debating/needing direction there. And need to fab a console yet.
Got some different front springs! So need to get those in and install shocks.
Plus more little stuff that ends up taking a lot of time.

Still have a little past stuff to post but will comment on time line.

Here's a pic of how the car was sitting at the Hot Rod Nats in Lincoln, Nebraska just this last Memorial Day weekend. If you are ever close to Lincoln Nebraska, take the opportunity to visit the Speedway Motors museum. It's huge and has tons of stuff and 1st class plus always changing displays with something new.

That was too much typing/reading. Lets get back to some pics.
Thanks again guys,
Jim

Last couple weeks have been catching up on broken/neglected stuff around the house. That was needed and feels good to have out of the way. :P

Here's some wiring done earlier this winter.
Started with original wiring harness stripped out unused circuits and rerouted. Had lots of hours in it though. That took a the mystery out of the fuel injection/computer wiring. Factory manuals were the way to go to trace out.

http://i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z331/jzwhite/Car%20Stuff/IMG_1159.jpg

Wire sleeving manufactured by www.techflex.com. They have a sizable catalog with lots! of wire covering applications. Believe it is the same as "Keep it Clean Wiring", "Painless Wiring" and others use. I got mine through www.mcmaster.com. The split wrap stays on very well.

Under dash harness built with enough connectors so the whole harness can be unplugged and dropped out from under dash including fuse box with minimal effort.

Don't need to store gloves in the glove box, so the fuse box is in there to eliminate standing on my head to get access.

A couple simple things.
4th gen wiper motor. Early wiper switch can be used. Add in proper sized resistors to the wires to give just a speed choice or two.

Brake line flare nuts were bead blasted then used Gun Bluing to finish. Gun bluing works great to blacken various parts plus freshen up factory black oxide coated nuts/bolts. Brake lines are powder coated.

Black anodized washer with stainless flat head screws. Washers available from hillcofasteners.com. Made for button head bolts, I countersunk these.

Camaro cruise control unit. Remote mount and cable in. Interesting the wiring circuit does NOT go through the computer. Speed pickup off trans needs to be the electrical pulse type though.

In previous pic, the battery cover is simply velcro'd on.

Covered the floor with Be-Quiet Ultimate sound deadener. www.b-quiet.com/ultimate.html

Installed some of the sound deadner on the firewall back when it was 60° in the garage. Finished the floor last week when it was 95°, boy was that pliable and stick down easy in the heat! And to everything else if you weren't careful.

Then a wide strip of 1/8"aluminum faced bubble wrap type heat sheild. Bubble wrap heat shield also glued to the roof.
http://i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z331/jzwhite/Car%20Stuff/IMG_7000.jpg

On top of that installed:
5692T61 Acoustical Polyurethane Foam Absorber, Adhesive Back, Skinned, 1/2" Thick, 54"w from McMaster Carr.
This will absorb sound waves bouncing around and insulate for heat.
Installed between truck and back seat also.
Have not driven the car with all this installed. Will give an update after I do.

Check out this site to help understand sound deadening.
http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/

Seams like I'm going a bit overboard on insulating but I want the A/C to to be nice and cool.
Several years ago I installed a small A/C unit reccomended for "coupes and small sedans". Did not keep up at all. Heat was coming in faster than the A/C could take it out. So installed a Vintage Air Gen II 4 vent evaporator. That helped out a lot but lack of insulation still left cooling less than desired. The foor only had the original rubber mat. Insulation and sealing of the car is AS IMPORTANT or more than the A/C unit. Plus install the largest unit that is feasible.

ChevyII MD: Good to hear from you. Will have to check out the progress on your Chevy II.

deuce1963: I take it that's your ChevyII in the profile pic. Sits down nice! Takes a lot of cutting to get these cars that low.

Here's the paint codes if anyone is interested:

Body is BMW Imola Red II, code 405. Used Glasurit
The red shows different in every picture, but basically a deep blood red.

Engine compartment and interior: Dark Argent Metallic is 1997-2011 GM code WA8945. covered with Ultra Flat Clear - BASF DC5775.

Need a picture of something. Here's a couple non-related to this. We stopped at the "American Pickers" place earlier this year in LeClaire, IA on the Mississippi river. Have family near there. Just a small place, don't go too far out of your way to see. Other than a different camera angle that's all there is.

Refinishing all the original anodized aluminum trim.
http://i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z331/jzwhite/IMG_6830.jpg

Stripping with Eastwood's anodize remover. Basically just sodium hydroxide.
Used a piece of scotchbrite pad to spread on like a brush. Didn't need to scub, just keep it wet. Only took 5 to 10 minutes to disolve the anodizing.
Have all the side and rear trim done and used less than 1/4 of a quart. Benefit to wiping on is the backside of trim does not get stripped and leaves original anodizing for protection. Just keep it wet until all the anodize is gone.

http://i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z331/jzwhite/IMG_6837.jpg

Anodized stripped. Then will remove dents, sand and polish.
http://i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z331/jzwhite/IMG_6832.jpg

Straightened/polished and installed on side of car. Recessed area starting 1/2 way back on door trim was bead blasted.

For aluminum, I'm not sure, I never keep a car long enough to find out, .

I've never tried zoopsseal or anything like that, so I can't comment on that. I would just run a little mothers on it now and then.

I think it'll keep it's shine for awhile. Just don't drive through and snow/salt, ;) .

Original door panels are in great shape. Used dye to match the graphite leather seats.

Dying the door/kick/rear panels and arm rests may have been the quickest project on the whole car. Clean the panel with lacquer thinner and spray the pre-mixed dye on. Install the next day. Used less than a quart.

Actually it was easier than pie. A couple years ago I was making a pie crust to cover with cinnamon and sugar. After shaking on the cinnamon, I commented to my wife this "off brand" cinnamon was sure a different color. She said it was cyan pepper. Well, trashed that. I better stay in the shop.

They have several products and people were very good to work with. Here's the link:
http://www.parasolinc.com/Products.asp?ProductID=VARIKOTE

Can match color from a sample or color chip + adjust sheen.

http://i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z331/jzwhite/IMG_7035.jpg

Another comment, used Steele rubber seals for door, trunk, vent windows, windshield, rear window, etc.
EVERYTHING fit great! Easier than pie again.

You'll find that once the aluminum trim has been polished... for maintenance it's really not that much trouble. The more you polish it, the less it needs polished..... that's just the nature of the aluminum grains and the way it comes up to gloss... it builds a bit if a "skin" so to speak. The car looks awesome.... very nice work, and I love the basic aproach to the interior. Not every car needs a full on custom leather wrap job.

Very nice work all the way around!

Very, very nice. Love that interior.
What seats are those?

Front and back seats are leather 02 Pontiac Grand Prix. Rear seat was the right width and height for rear shelf.

Foam needed trimmed to fit around mini-tubs on seat back and seat bottom. Stock tubs would have needed trimming also. A metal ledge was installed under forward edge of seat bottom for support. Die grinder with 1/16" thick metal cutting blade scooped out the foam like carving a watermelon.

Guages are from 94 Camaro. See posts #24 to #27 on dash fab.

Have put a few miles on the car. Happy with insulation results. A/C does not have to run on high all the time. Sound level is way improved from before. Still have a nice comfortable level of exhaust sound, wouldn't want that all eliminated! To reduce low req. sound waves further would need some very dense material.

Since we are talking exhaust, here's a pic of the exhaust.

Previously a finned radiator style transmission cooler was installed in front of the radiator and A/C condensor.
Utilizing these finned coolers and mounting away from the radiator dropped 20° off the engine temp.

Here's a couple pics of the bench the bumper is on. Two 2x4's are attached to lengths of conduit that slide under the top.

Pulling out allows you to put a 4x8 sheet of plywood or whatever on the bench. The overlapping pull out supports act like saw horses to support the sheet you are cutting through. Attach casters to the legs so you can roll outside or wherever.

Don't set the saw too deep though. 1st time I used it I nic'd the conduit with the blade

Front: 16x7 wheels with 205-50-16's
Classic Performance 2" drop spindles and tubular A-arms. Stock steering. Front springs are stock length 6 cyl springs.

Rear: 17x9.5 wheels with 275-50-17's

Met the goal in making it to Kansas City Good Guys over Labor Day weekend.
:goodguys:
Finished at 11pm Thursday night and left Friday morning.

Pretty much stayed "On Target" towards original intent of balancing "level of build, ability, time in the shop, with family, and $ input"

Level of build: did add some extra there in level of finish work.
Ability: Gained a lot of understanding/respect in what it takes to get the body fairly straight.
Time in the shop: Over ran budget on that one.
$ input: Resisted several temptations to buy and upgrade more. Instead stayed on target by working with what I had and being content there.
With family: Well, did make it to most of the family activities. If I think I did well here, it was because of my wife's patience during the project.

Then to top it all off at the end finishing up - I FORGOT MY WIFE'S BIRTHDAY on Labor Day. Enough said. LOVE YOU HONEY! Let's go out for a ride in "our" Chevy II.

amazing attention to detail.

How did the AC and insulation work? I might have to go back and add the foam you have on top to mine.

Drove the car 225 miles to KC Good Guys in about 95° heat.
AC worked great. Able to set the AC thermostat about 2/3, so the AC clutch would cycle off quite a bit of the time. Cycling the AC off also kept heat off the radiator. Insulate everything you can and seal all the gaps. It's too hard to bail out a leaking boat. There are other good material options to use also. Happy with the combination used on this build.

Also pleased with noise level. Not bad at all but still get a comfortable level of exhaust music.

Looking up info on "Hot Rod Drag Week" - saw a video with one of the cars going down the road and holding a pizza box out the window to deflect some air inside :D . After they stopped, it showed them with an infra red thermometer showing over 180° off the floor. Better insulate well.
