Here is a new project that we have been working on that many of you may know , or have seen it at several of the track events. After a lot of discussions over the past few years, Chris decided to bring his 66 Chevelle in for some updating. His main goals were looking for better performance as well as general ride quality and the overall stance of the car. The timing worked out perfectly as we were in the final stages of re-designing our Chevelle chassis. So after a few more discussions, we went to work.

Here is the original car.

Our original chassis was designed and built 5 years ago before we many of the capabilities that we now do. There has been a lot of conversation about frames hanging down below the rockers of a car. This was one of our main areas to address in the re-design of the chassis. The goal was to get the new frame rail to be at the same location or less than where a stock frame rail sits in relation to the rocker. We were able to accomplish this and more! Our new frame rail design sits actually 3/4" closer to the body than a stock frame making it completely disappear under the car. As Chris said, it is a shame to cover this chassis up with a body, but our goal was to make a low profile frame as well as improve upon an already proven platform.

Here are a few shots of the frame rails being mocked up under the body.
http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/Chris%2066%20Chevelle/Picture16749.jpg

Not the best view with the protective paper, but you can get the idea. Even with the car at eye level, the frame rails are not visible! There will be better pics in the next few days when the car is back on the chassis.

New center crossmember design to clear the floor, allow for 3" exhaust, and keep the frame rail the lowest point on the car.

A few shots of the chassis clamped in the jig being welded up. A lot of time went into the jigs and fixtures to make all future chassis the same as the first chassis.

Another visual re-design was on the rear section of the main frame rail in front of the rear wheel. On most chassis, the frame rail dives inward leaving a large gap. In our re-design we moved the body mount on the frame rail so we can have a continuous frame rail running down the rocker filling it out. The rear frame rail kick up is also now boxed in by the side rail and the center crossmember brace creating a rear torque box in the frame for added strength.

One question - I think I see both Wilwood brakes and a Lokar e-brake handle mounted on the tranny tunnel.

How effective is that e-brake?

Can you still use the stock front inner fender wells or do you have to massage them to make them fit? Also for the 65' frame? It could be just the pictures, but it looks like the frame comes out further forward into the wheel area?

Doesn't work that great. Chris made the decision today to eliminate the e-brake all together because of that.

You can run the stock inner fenders with little modifications. It is simply trimming the opening slightly around the control arms.

You are right about the '65 in our other post. The front of the side frame rail came forward into the front wheel opening. The new version of the chassis does a sharp 90 degree turn and ends up about 2" further back so it ends perfectly inline with the firewall and does not intrude in to the wheel opening.

Chris started out with the plan of using his floater 9” rear end from the old chassis. We were going to cut all of the brackets off and weld our 4-link brackets in place for our chassis. Well, Chris caught a glimpse of another product that we were in the final stages of developing. Like every good car project, he made a few revisions and changed directions!

Here is Chris's completed chassis and the first Roadster Shop Fully Independent Fast Track Chevelle Chassis

We want to give a big thank you to Phil, Jeremy, Neal, and the whole Roadster Shop group for doing such top notch work. We really appreciate the opportunity to have the first completed RS/IRS chassis on the street. It is very exciting for us to see the enthusiasm that the Gerbers and all of their empoyees have for this hobby. As someone stated before it is almost a shame to cover up all of this beautiful work. The detail work in bare metal is breathtaking. Should be interesting to see what it all looks like in paint in a week or so.
I can not wait to thrash this thing!!!

Chris's car has been coming together. We have the body back on the chassis with the motor and trans installed. A little bit of metal work was needed at this point. We had to cut out the trans tunnel and fab a new one since his original chassis had the trans mount 4.5" lower than our chassis.

Here is a good side profile of the car to see how much of the frame rail hangs below the rocker. (The body was still slightly sitting on the trans so the front is up about 1/4" higher than it should be)

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/Chris%2066%20Chevelle/Picture18423.jpg

Here is a shot of another 66 that we are just starting on. This is on the stock frame with original 1966 bushings. The frame rail is right at 1.75" from the bottom of the rocker pinch weld.
http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/Chris%2066%20Chevelle/Picture17794.jpg

And here is a pic of our low profile frame rail with a ruler clamped to the bottom of the frame rail. It is right at 1/2" below the rocker pinch weld! That is 3/4" higher than the stock frame rail. (stock height Energy Suspension body mounts are installed)

Watched Chris at the Motorstate Challenge autocross yesterday....car performed excellent. And that stance, its is just so right. Very nice car.

Thanks Aaron! We were very happy with the way the car performed for having about 10 miles on it before the event. We did have a track day set up earlier in the week at Black Hawk Raceway to try dial it in, but a small electrical problem and over 4 hours of severe rain did not allow us to get more than 3 laps in. We did some initial "parking lot testing" the day before in an attempt to get a decent base line. Our first session out on the track revealed that we were a little off. We were able to dial it in more and more each session and continued to better our times. I was able to put down the 2nd fastest lap in the vendor category on my last session. Chris ended up in 8th or 9th in the Competitor class. This was his first time on a road course since this event last year, and only his 4th or 5th time ever. Pretty impressive especially considering he had only driven the car for the first time in the cruise the night before!

The autocross on Sunday was also a very good test for the car. We kept making minor adjustments between runs and getting faster and faster. In the end, Chris finished 4th in the competitor class and I finished 3rd in the vendor class.

Overall we were very impressed that the car was a top competitor fresh out of the box with minimal tuning or set up. Most cars that we were running against have been out for 2 or more years and had a lot of seat time. I am really looking forward to the results that will come from more seat time and set up time as we move forward with the car! This was a brand new rear suspension that had never been tested. It had never seen the road until a week ago. We ran with some of the best in the sport and finished extremely well. I could not be happier with our results and can't wait to see what we can do at the next event!

It was great having the car back on the road again last weekend. I can't believe it had been almost nine months since I had driven the Chevelle. A huge thank you to Phil, Jeremy, and Neal Gerber and all of the employees at the Roadster Shop. The car has already exceeded all of our expectations and I know with time and tuning it's only going to get better. I could not have imagined that the Chevelle would perform so well with almost no miles on it and a completely untested suspension. It is awesome!
I also need to thank the guys from AFCO/Dynatech that helped with the new headers and shock tuning before and during the MotorState event. It was amazing what a few adjustments did to settle the car and pick up time on the track. I also need to thank Wilwood for helping us with the new Superlight brake system.
Can't wait to drive it out to the GoodGuys event in DesMoines next week and rack up some miles. Hope to see some of you there at the autocross. Please stop by and jump in if the passenger seat is open.

I do feel very lucky to have a car like this. I owe a big thanks to Randy Johnson at D & Z Customs for building the Chevelle and passing it on to us as well as the Gerbers at Roadster Shop for taking it to the next level. When we bought the car from Randy last year we thought it was the coolest '66 out there. Never thought we would be rebuilding it a year later, but what a difference. The Roadster Shop chassis has a more narrow track width from stock so my sizing may not be a very good reference for someone with a stock frame. The new Weld wheels are 18 x 9.5" in front with 6.6" bs. We had to run a small spacer as the exact sizing we needed was not available. The Kenesis wheels have 6.375" bs on the front, same size wheels. The rears are 18 x 12" with 7.6" bs.
Good luck Chevelle shopping. It would be really cool to see more of them out at the events. Helps balance out the Camaro population.

Stielow said he got to drive the Chevelle at the Heidt's track event and loved how the car handled. Really noticed how well the IRS worked going over the rumble strips in the turns...Congrats again guys.

Thanks Charley

It was really awesome having Mark drive the car for a couple of laps. I probably should have let him try to catch James after Mary gave Mark the "you're number one" sign as they passed by, but I wanted to drive one more time. I'd like to see Mark make more than a couple of laps at another event to see how quick he could make this thing go. The Chevelle had already exceeded our expectations in every way and having Mark put his stamp of approval on the end result just seals the deal.
We started with what I thought was one of the coolest Chevelles ever, built by Randy Johnson at D & Z Customs, and the incredibly talented crew at the Roadster Shop managed to make it even better.
Thanks to all.

Chris, it was nice to talk with you and Linda again at GG's and at the Crown Plaza. You have, what I think, is one of the nicest Chevelles out now, really. I don't know what it is, but it just is. Maybe the "no frills," look that Randy gave it, or maybe its the killer stance that the RS guys gave it. Maybe its both. So clean, so understated, so nice.
Hope Tony and I can hook up with you two in Chicago, on your home turf. Looking forward to showing you what we've been working on :unibrow:

Nice to get some feedback from Mark, he knows his way around cars and the tracks too.

What happened w/the 1st set of wheels that were on there?

I still have my old Kenesis wheels and will keep them around for a second set of tires. I saw these new Weld Racing wheels at the SEMA show last year and thought they were pretty cool. These are extremely light weight too. At first I thought about getting a set for some drag radials and some skinny front tires, but after the new chassis I went with a set for autocross and track events. These are 18 x 9.5 and 18 x 12.

Roadster Shop - I looked as close as I could at your IRS but couldn't tell - are there bushings in the diff mounting ? Is the pumpkin hard mounted to the chassis ? HOw is the NVH with that setup ? I assume it solves any kind of wheel hop issue.

If I keep the GTO that chassis might end up going under it.

A few updates on the Chevelle. It arrived at SEMA this morning and will be on display outside representing Weld Racing Wheels. Also just got my copy of the January 2012 issue of Chevy High Performance. The Chevelle made it on the cover, with a freind's '72 TT Malibu, and there is a 5 page feature inside.

Some updates on the Chevelle.
Made it to the SEMA show with the car with help from the Roadster Shop and Weld Racing. While there we received an invite to the Optima Ultimate Street Car event where we finished 14th overall. The car performed flawlessly and we couldn't have been more pleased.
Received our new Super Chevy today and the Chevelle is on the cover with Deanna's Camaro for the suspension issue. There is a 4 page write up inside with some great commentary from Mary Pozzi and Jim Campisano.
Also have a new video on youtube from the guys at Route 2. They shot this while we were at Goodguys in DesMoines this summer.

Thank you to everyone that has helped with the car and was a part of our week at SEMA. Not sure how we will ever top this year's events and accomplishments.

just got the magazine today. What a great car. I'd love to do one of those frames on an early Chevelle some day. I know the ride is great but I was always afraid of the power limits of an IRS. Seems like that has been solved by the Roadster Shop.

Keep your eyes on the RS web site. They are doing an IRS chassis for a '69 Camaro with a 2,000 HP twin turbo big block.

Me either Chris. I scored another car two weeks ago that I'll be using the body from. Hopefully gonna save some money on the metal work...more money for performance parts! Started a thread on TC for it.

Thanks Albert. And thanks again for the great party on Wednesday night. It was an incredibly nice gesture for you to step up and do this and allow our group a place to hang out.

Your car looked bad azz by the way. Looking forward to seeing it at some events next year. I may have to sneak a minute or two behind the wheel.
You need to drive the Chevelle once too.

The cool part was watching people walk right by it without giving it a second glance like it was some stock Chevelle with wheels-- A COOL FACTOR OF 10!!

way to go on a beautiful car that performs, my top 3 of SEMA

Thanks for the compliments on the Chevelle. Coming from you that really means something. The cars you have done are all top notch and the Camaro you had at SEMA was no different. My wife and I were both checking it out for quite some time on Wednesday. Awesome job!

Sometimes I wonder if the car is too low key as we get that walk by thing a lot. If you don't pay attention it looks like a stock SS with 18s on it. Almost everyone thinks its on bags too. People have to look and see the coil overs before they beleive me. They have a blank stare when I get in and drive away without airing it up.

It's a walk softly, and carry a big stick kind of drive! I love it!
