We are just getting underway on a 66 Chevelle for Mike, a new customer from the east coast. This one will be a cool blend of old and new. The plans are to retain the stock exterior look of the car, but go with the best of the everything under the car. Mike had a 66 back in high school, and wanted to re-create the car with modern performance and drive-ability. The original inline 6 that he had in high school is getting replaced with an 800 HP 572 with a T-56 behind it. The old frame will be replaced with one of our new Fast Track, Low-Profile Chevelle Chassis. The color will be the same Madeira Maroon that Mike's original car was with black interior. There are a lot of other details left to iron out and I'll keep them updated as we proceed. Here are the renderings that we have so far from Eric Brockmeyer.

The first car that Mike purchased and sent out to us was...... well, not much of a car left at all. After looking it over, it was decided that we should find a new candidate for Mike's project. This thing was to the point that there was not a salvageable panel left on it anywhere. Take a look.

The decision was made to start looking for a different car to begin the build rather than blow a huge chunk of the budget on rust repair. We found a super clean, solid car out of Texas that should put us a few months ahead. The car arrived on Wednesday and we are going to get it torn down and then out to media blasting next.

I like the first rendering a little better. Second one is nice...but common.

Ah, I'd put a set of the big billet rally's on there before the ones in the first drawing. I understand the old school look but we all know the wrong wheel will kill the finished product. You guys are experts when it comes to pulling it all together. You'll get it spot on when it finished. I'm sure of that.

Been making some more headway on the '66. The car has been disassembled and is out to be stripped.

We have been going ahead on the chassis in the mean time and have that just about wrapped up.

how much ground clearance did you gain with the new version of the inner structure vs the old round tube? does anything hang below the bottom of the frame rails?

looks really good!

Thanks, There was maybe 1/2" to 3/4" of ground clearance picked up with the new crossmember design. (not really our main goal, but we did pick up something) The frame rail is the lowest point on the car with the exception of the plate section of the crossmember, which is about 1/2" below the frame rail. The main reason for the crossmember design was to get the chassis tighter to the body and still have room for 3" exhaust to be tucked between the two.

I love 66 chevelles and I totally agree with the second rendering vote. You guys would be taking it back to the early nineties with those wheels in the first rendering. I have to agree with the rpm quote about some big rallies. That would be a better route. Its gonna be a badass chevelle not a mini truck!! Can't wait to see you guys finish this one!!

What do people use to get the uniformed smooth look when sanding to the bare metal?

What do people use to get the uniformed smooth look when sanding to the bare metal?

It takes some skill on both the welding and metal finishing side. The quick answer is that you have to be able to weld the panels with minimal warping or distortion. Then knock the welds down with a grinder with out getting into the metal around it. We then do a lot of hammer and dolly work to make sure that all surfaces are even and uniform before final grinding. We step down the grit getting finer and finer and then finish it with a DA and then a red scuff pad by hand.

The stance on this car is spot on. The 66/67's just look killer when they are sitting right. This car is 100% stock body and will retain stock trim, but the aggressive stance totally makes the car.

We are going to be fabbing headers and then exhaust in the next week and then over to the body shop side.

The fronts are too far in for this car. They could easily go out another 1.5" - 2".

If you have looked at this post you would have seen the original renderings with two different style rims. I have been talking with Boyds and have come up with a one off version of the Harm rims without the spikes. But still not sure about how the over all look of the car will be. They sent me a cad design image and I have included for you to see and a changed rendering. I have been talking to Phil from the Roadstershop and he has suggested a full rim vice a spoke one. Looked at Billet Specialties Outlaw-G and Bonneville-G. Had baby moons and beauty rings on the original one I had in Highschool and have been looking at a few of those styles too. Wondering what you guys think?

If you have looked at this post you would have seen the original renderings with two different style rims. I have been talking with Boyds and have come up with a one off version of the Harm rims without the spikes. But still not sure about how the over all look of the car will be. They sent me a cad design image and I have included for you to see and a changed rendering. I have been talking to Phil from the Roadstershop and he has suggested a full rim vice a spoke one. Looked at Billet Specialties Outlaw-G and Bonneville-G. Had baby moons and beauty rings on the original one I had in Highschool and have been looking at a few of those styles too. Wondering what you guys think?

http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/dd493/mappio/Roadster%20Shop%20Chevelle/Bonneville-G.jpg

I think the Boyd wheels give you a more street rod muscle car approach.

The forgeline give you more of a European sport car approach.

The old school look of the Billet Bonneville wheels lend themselves to more of a hotrod appeal.

It just depends on what's your preference. One thing is for sure, the car is going to be awesome with RS at the build.

You sure you can get any traction with those skinny little back tires?;)

Just kidding you there! Awesome build.

As for the wheels, I like the look the Forgeline, HRE, Rushforth....typical of what a lot of the current cars are running. Split spoke or similar. Although any of the choices you posted will look great on the car.

My plans are to do it all, I want to show it, race and drag it. Most of all I just want to drive it till the tires fall off. Can't wait to sit behind the wheel and feel the power.

They look like the flex pipes that SPD sells..... how much flex do they have vs the more "braided steel" ones?

SPD doesnt have a price on their website....

I think I may add some to mine in the same spot. Now that we have the exhaust all mocked up and not even fully welded, I need to use a little force to get the flanges at the headers to line up....

The flex couplers have the same amount of flex as the woven stainless version. On most of the woven stainless style, they still use this as an inner liner. We started using this style since they are a little cleaner looking than the woven stainless and easier to ceramic coat.

Are you shootin the car with the doors on? Just askin cause i always saw cars with the jambs done before the rest. Can you get good coverage of the hinges and that part of the jambs that way? I assume it makes for an easier remounting after and less chances of scratching.

Sorry, trying to get all tips i can in body land, new project is in and i really want to try my hand on this one.

Thanks,

Lead, the car is just getting primed here. We left the doors on for primer so we do not have to spend the time re-aligning them between body work and prep work. When the car is painted, every single piece is taken off the car and sprayed separately.

Hey Phil what what kind of black paint are you using for the frame? and what kind of paint for the components? I'm out in the shop today (came home for the weekend) and was contemplating colors for the fast track 67 Mustang Front Clip I just got from you guys...

PS - pictures don't do it justice!!!

Also, what kind of steering is that on the car? Rack and Pinion with a hydraulic assist or something?

Keep up the good work!

Tom, glad you like the front clip. The Mustang stuff has been taking off lately. Great to see more Mustangs getting the P/T treatment. The new 5.0L motor and available suspension components have really opened up the Mustang market now!

The chassis on this car (and several others) is actually powder coated in a satin black. The control arms and components are painted in a few different silvers and charcoals with matte clear. We try to do 1 or 2 colors so there is some contrast and you can make out each of the parts instead of a sea of one color where individual components tend to disappear.

The rack on this chassis is a hydraulic power assist built by Woodward.

It is a 63 Fairlane. it will be a pretty unique car. All stock trim, stock body, total grandma's car from the outside. underneath is one of our custom Fast Track chassis with our new IRS. It has a Jon Kaase Boss 9 motor with 8 stack injection and a T-56 trans. The car is due back from media blasting today and I will start a build thread shortly.

http://www.proformanceunlimited.com/specs/572_750.html

And here is the video they made for me.

Seems a lot of Fords are making their way into the shop.

Thanks everyone. The car is on the final stretch and turning out really nice! The color really pops nicely in the sun. It is hard to capture in a picture, but when the sun shines through the shop window and hits the car in areas, it really comes to life. yeah no sh!t I had to adjust the hue on my monitor before it blew up. LOL

Thanks, we use thinner on all of the hoses and clamps to get the printing off once the car is completed. The green text definitely jumps out on the clamps and is rather ugly.

The regulator is mounted on the firewall behind the passenger side head so the fuel lines visible are not running up the firewall and then draping over the motor. There is not enough room between the regulator and the back of the fuel rail to run a line direct. So, it is run to the front of the fuel rail.

We are running 18x9 and 20x12's on this car. The Blue 67 will hopefully be out this summer if we can find some free time to work on it. The car is probably about 2-3 weeks away from being ready for upholstery. It is just hard finding those 2-3 weeks.

The dash for a 66 with ac has two large vents in the middle and 2 large hole vents on corners. I didn't like the way that looked. I wanted to stay as original to the car build code as i could.

It is a Malibu V-8 manual w/o AC, Factory Color Madiera Maroon with black interior. (Only thing not per build code is I chose buckets instead of bench)

Plus I live in CT and for the 2 days it gets hot enough here to have the ac on I will just deal with it. Lol.

Plus I think with no ac it keeps the motor clean looking. No clutter!

After the guys at the Roadster shop got some drive time on the car they realized while the stock gages looked good and worked. The gage ranges would not work for the hi performance engine that is in the car. So they added some time correct after market gages to monitor the engine the correct way. Nailed it. I was worried that the gages would standout and just look out of place but as always the Roadster Shop never fails to impress.

Very nice car, and again, i love the simplicity of it over all the doodas some are trying to pull off just to be different, not that its not cool, as its what drives the hobby, but you just cant beat a '' Pumped up'' Classic in my book.

I finally got the got the car. I have been to two car show so far and won Grand Champion at local event and "Slick 60's" at the Good Guys Eastern Nationals. I took a trip with the Chevelle and put it next to my dads 66 GTO and took some pics. Notice we have the same licence plate. You judge which one is the real WIKD 66!

Well sorry I haven't posted anything on here in a while I have been pretty busy enjoying the car. I wanted to share a couple of pictures with everyone and give you some updates of what I have been doing.

First I have been showing the car all over and have gotten some good response from some very nice people. The car was photographed at the Roadster Shop during the build and was published in the August edition of Chevy High Performance. I was so stoked. I purchased a picture plaque of the article. Here is a picture of it.

Here are couple more pictures of the car. I hope you enjoy

Also I have two younger brothers that own their own videography company. They came down for a visit and took some video and had some fun making me a video of the car. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Sorry to all the Mustang drivers but there was no way in hell I was gonna let that guy get past me. The video doesn't show it very well but he tried to come zooming up and pass me. Boy did he get a surprise!

'66 Chevelle I think is my favorite year! Yours is a beautiful car. Those headers are a work of art as are the rest of the details.

My buddy in high school in the late 80's had a '66 Chevelle with a 396, ported rectangle heads, TH400 and nitrous. It looked mean as hell.. but never really was that fast as he didn't put slicks on it. :headspin:

Great looking car...wow.

The vid is well done obviously, except IMO that great motor should be the loud noise, not the music.

I'd be interested in watching it again if there is a version with the music
replaced by the motor sounds.

I was just about to make the same comment. If nothing else, the part were your car is on the dyno, turn the music down and let the WOT pull be the "music".

Your car is beautiful and very nicely put together!

I completely agree, the problem is the engine is so loud that it just saturates the microphone. My brothers just brought down their camera not the voice equipment. In the raw footage it doesn't sound very good. Best sound you can hear in the video is when the gopro is on the side of the car and I'm smoking the RX-8. Glad you like the video though!

I'm looking for some help from all you car buffs out there. I have entered into a contest at Champion Spark Plugs and I'm one of the 10 finalist. This a contest where the most votes wins. So I'm hitting all the car guys I can get my hands on. The contest starts on the 9th and goes to the 15th. You can vote once a day and the one who gets the most votes wins. Here is the address:

http://www.alwaysachampion.com/king-of-the-road/challenger/1498343

So if you could help out that would great! Thanks in advance.

Also I got published again in the online magazine ChevyHardcore. Check out the article. I love giving props to the Roadster Shop for the work they did on the car!

I have seen this amazing car in person. Living here in Ct, I sometimes run into it at shows. I took the time to really study it. The car is perfect. Almost too subtle though. Sadly I have seen people walk by it thinking it was just a "regular" Chevelle. This car is top notch, but you need to take the time to really look at it and all its refinements.

Thanks, I appreciate that. If you see the car at a show stop by and say Hi always up for meeting new people with common interests.
