Hello,

I have been a member for sometime now but never posted yet so here it goes!
I have my project finally started, 69 camaro with the following goodies (see below) in the near future! The car is going to be the orginal Fathom Green with a combo of orginal dark green interior with some black and carbon fiber splashed in it also.

This project started back in 2004 on christmas eve when my wonderful wife have the car dropped off for my christmas present, it started as a plain restore with a big block. But now as all projects seem to do, the end target changed. I had most the body work all done and car painted but after getting ready to assemble it found I paid good money for a great hack job ( my bad!!) So then I meet a cool guy from my area on here and he hooked me up with a bunch of good info and a GREAT shop. So the project is back on track with some back tracking but will be right this time!

I need to figure out how to post some pics and the best way to do it, cuz from what I have seen everyone here loves pics (me included) and I get some great info and ideas from them. So everyone please feel free to give me your thoughts and anything else!! My other passion is airplanes I have one right now I am restoring, 1946 Ercoupe. I work for UPS as a aircraft mechanic so I know my way around aircraft, just slow and stupid when it comes to this pro touring car stuff but learning as I go!!!!!!! :woot:

Welcome Chris!

Sounds like a nice project!

There is a thread about how to post pics.... and the easiest way is to get yourself a Photobucket account.... then you upload your pics to there and then copy the URL (I think that's what I do)... then you drop that in the post... and the pics show up.

Find that thread - it's easy and you'll get the hang of it!

And just for fun.....now that you've opened yourself up!

Ok here we go, these are some pics of when I got the car and where it is now before the back tracking on it starts! Like I said the car looked good from 20 ft away but ugly when you got close and crawling around it.

I got a couple great guys helping/guiding me with it now, they are members on here also 1st is "72novadriver" he built a awesome nova. I know he is going to do wonders on mine and the best part is he is going to let me do as much as I can while keeping me on the right track. The 2nd guy is on here using the member name "Reckley" who is doing a sweet 67 camaro! Just wanted to throw out a quick thanks to these guys!

Here is a link for the pics

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to post some pics and give a quick little update on my project. Update is that it is going SLOW!!! LOL But I know it will be right this time! After we got the car all stripped and parts rolling in it should start picking up some speed. I figured out I can't take pics in the hi setting on the camera and get them to upload here, so I will put the rest in a link. I have been on information overload reading about about everyones great projects and getting some cool ideas! I am also getting Great info on what works and what might not work. And last but not least I am going to need to knock off a few banks to get this project done the way I want  :willy:

And just a FYI and this might be old info but the spray on bedliner stufff (SEM I think) that was on my car does not come off with most blast media very well! I spent 2.5 days scrapping by hand with a propane torch, then made a 2nd trip to media blaster to clean it up nice.

Thanks more to come later!

Chris,

Welcome to LG. Nice to see another car getting the treatment it deserves. Nice to see the pictures and progress. Yeah it sucks to go slow, but it sounds like you're getting some great advice and on track for an awesome build. Keep at it and throw up pictures whenever you can. I'd love to see a few of that 1946 Ercoupe you're restoring...if you get the chance.

See you around the pattern.

Welcome aboard, Chris. What kind of equipment do you support as an aircraft mechanic?

Curtis,
I would love to send you some pics of the coupe ! Send me a PM with a email so I dont clog up space here. I noticed from some of your post it sounded like you maybe a airline pilot?? If so with who?

Scott,
I work for UPS in Louisville I work on every thing we have in our fleet 757, 767, A300, MD11, and 747's. Right now I work in the structures shop doing sheetmetal and composite work. I use to work at a outer gateway and took complete care of 3 jets at any one time mostly 757, 727, DC8, and A300's

I wanted to ask is there a way to transfer this thread to the project updates or better to just start a new one??

Thanks!

John,

My wife found the car back in 2004 and bought it for me for Christmas! I sent her to get the exhaust fixed on our blazer and she secretly bought me the car, the title says it came from PA.

The car was/is in amazing shape to start a project. I just wish I had found Billy on my first go around then I would not be doing double the work but hey I guess it's only money and you can't take it with you!!

I am getting some albums around on a photo bucket account of all my pics from the first go around :wow: and another for the right one!:woot:

Thanks

Hey thanks for the kind words, I looked at your project and read your details. Yes your right looks we are going to have pretty close to the same basics, I did go with a t56 magnuam for the trans which with DSE half high body mounts made it so we had to raise the tunnel. I knew going into it that the tunnel would have to be raised due to reading different peoples threads on here and the very talented person at the shop I am using (Billy Utley at B & B Classics) he really knows his stuff! I try to do as much as possiable but with my crazy work schedule it makes it impossiable to complete and I am learning alot as we go!

Thanks for the thoughts on that trans cross member it is really turned out nice! But I can't take the credit for it, wish I could though:willy: The guy at the shop I use is a great fabricator. I don't have time or tools to do all the fab work between this project and my new one which I will do all the work on!!

Mike, Cool to hear you had a ercoupe, mine is a 415-C model. I am heading over right now to start getting it all unpacked from trip home and get all the boxes of parts sorted. I have a split elevator from a "E" model to put on it which I have found from my research is a pretty desirable mod!.

As for the Camaro project it is comming along nicely I have got a great small shop doing all my fab and paint work. I don't have the time or tools to do everything on the car with my crazy work schedule. I do go over and help with what ever I can right now and plan to be doing more when it come to putting the thing together. Fabrication requires welding which I don't do well, if you need a hole burned through some metal I am your guy!
I work on airplanes for a living and if I need welding done it gets contracted out to a certified aircraft welder!

I was lucky to get hooked up with a member on here that has a small shop, Billy Utley (B&B Claasics) now I know the car is going to be SICK!!!

It's been awhile since I had anything to really report on on here. It seems like thats changing now, my car is getting some good progress now and is "the hot project on the list" in the shop now so here are some pics of the progress from the other day.

I also put a order in for wheels (Forgeline GA3's) and a new GM ls376/480hp crate motor! Hoping to keep my updates comming more often now.

Hello, I just went over to check in on my project this week before I head down to a long couple weeks at work (UPS little busy this time of year)!!

So they are working on the engine down bars, getting the drivers side qtr off and ready to replace. Also got my new engine in and bolted up! New wheels should be here in about 3 weeks. I have been researching wiring harness and today spent alot of time looking into the New MSD Atomic EFI LS system, I am thinking thats the way I am headed now!

Well here are some new pics.

Hello, Just wanted to post a couple pics that were emailed to me of a little progress this week on my project. I guess the started the process for the mini-tubs as far cutting the frame rails and welding in the close out plates, welded in some tie-down/tow hooks to the front of the sub frame, got the engine down bars mostly finished up and just need final welding. then the big deal of the week is the new Forgeline GA3's with polished outers and Satin Gunmetal centers/inners showed up!!! Figured about 4 weeks for the wheels from order to delivery and it was only about 2 weeks, damn they were fast!:wow: :woot:

Well here is wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year also may everyone be safe!

Hey Everyone!
Just went and peeked in on my project and got a few pics so thought I would throw them up for you to check out if your interested. According to Billy he plans to have all the Quadra Link all complety installed my Tuesday next week and mout the rear-end so he can check the tire fit in the wheel wells befor he starts final install of the quater panels.

So first thing Monday morning I am going to order a thrid member for the rear-end, planning on going with alum center section, tru trac and 3.89 gears. I have been do some research and believe I am going to use Drive Train Specialists they seem to be be pretty fairly priced and a local group to me which I like dealing with so if I should need anything in the future. So please anyone with any info that might help, hit me with please

So I guess thats it for about now, next post will be a couple of pics of the New wheels mounted on the new rubber. Maybe next week some pics with the wheels mounted up to car :unibrow:

Hey guys!
It's been awhile since I have had time to update with progress on my car but here it goes! Last time the cage was being built, well that is now complete along with the cross bar.

The rocker repair is now complete and the car weighs 30 lbs lighter after getting all the dirt etc out of rockers LOL. There are a few pics of the final welding of the tubs and the Q link install.

Then it was time for expoxy prime and lizard skin on the internal structure. Billy then fixed the L/H lower fender and the side mounting flanges on the lower valance. Final few pics are of the final stages of the down bars and cross braces, Qtr panel install, and then assembly to start fitting everything!

Billy is burning the midnight oil and hitting it hard to have it ready to go to to Joe & Paul VanNus at Dutchboys Hot Rod to get it all ready for paint and then make it colorful again! Well that is about it for now so here are the pics..

Just went thru the whole thread....

Very nice!!

You know, as its raining here today and i spent the day reading car mags and Lat-G project updates (back hurts and i def needed a chillin day anyway so...). It got me thinking, the more i look at the cars beeing built here on Lat-G, the more i realize this site is REALLY helping the car community.

I mean, we see the names of some shops become more and more recognized for their work and it turn it makes it easier for some more enthusiasts to not get burned when giving contracts on their projects by beeing able to identify these shops as ones that deliver and not only that, but that they share the passion on the same level as the customer!! We all know how fast our "toys" can become EXPENSIVE and getting burned by some, how should i say, less professionnal than most(?) shops is not something we would wish to anyone, no? Been there done that too, so i can relate.

Its nice to see the hobby grow and good people get together to make things move in the same direction.

You can see in those last pics the same passion in all the guy's eyes about just picking the car up !! Another beast is being born!!

Love the way your project is going!

Well here is a quick update on my project, this thing needs a name but I am having a hard time with that.

Well anyway, Paul started get everything around and fitting all the front end on the car. He called me and gave me good news and some so so bad news. The Rh door fit great with just a little work needed on the gaps, the Lh door sucks along with header panel and hood. Classic GM orginal parts vs re-pop parts. Paul and Joe had a GM hood and bolted it up and it fit great. So Paul has tracked me down a orginal cowl hood and header panel. I was given a list of other parts to track down that they need to keep progress moving such as weather strip, grill, etc.. so everything can be fit before hand. Got every thing around and headed to drop it off Tuesday. They got the decklid fitted and the gaps pretty well figured out with a little work.

I am getting ready to order headers tomorrow so we can get the exhaust built also. I am getting to the stage where I can see the money pit opening fast with all the stuff needed you don't really think about, it's easy to plan for the big ticket things because the stare you in the face. It's the little things, all the hadware, hose/fittings, seals, rollers to rebuild the window assemblies, etc... that I have never really thought about, well tried but never had a good list.:bang: :confused18: Oh well it's just :G-Dub:

Ok here are some pics hope everyone likes them and as always let me know what you think, well the pics are to large to attach and I do not know how to resize them manually right this second. :warning: So here is a link to the photo bucket account with them the should be on last 2 pages. this link hass all the pics so far.

Hey Chris your build looks great. I haven't had any work done by Dutchboys myself but I'm a big fan of theirs.

Based on their track record you've made an obvious and excellent choice.

I think the whole Father - Son aspect of their business is way cool too.

When spending this kind of money on a project I'm sure it's a lot easier to sleep at night knowing talented people like them are doing the work.

I'll be following this thread closely!!!

A few updates on Chris' car, We have been super busy at the shop lately and have made some great progress on the car. The car is finally ready for the bodywork stage. We have been fine tuning gaps all around the car. Getting the front sheet metal fitting perfectly. Which took a bit of work. Along with re-leading the roof/qtr seems, also doing some smoothing and tucking on the bumpers and any other Misc fab work that needed to be done. Time to make is pretty now!:gitrdun:

Here is a link to some photos ive been taking along the way. Look for some of the bodywork stage coming up soon.

It's been a long time for a update and sometimes I am not very good at keeping up. Joe and Paul have been working there Dutchboy magic on the Camaro project. I have a ton of pics to post so will require a few post I think.

And the color is not seen as much as other classic colors on the Camaro.

Thanks I am glad I did this color because its not all that common, I am trying now to figure out interior color. I am not Hugh fan of black, but not sure I want it all green either. Maybe do some slightly more supportive seats with houndstooth inserts?

Any updates Chris?

Hey everyone,
No new pics right this second. I have busy with work and trying to get rid of a house and get plans drawn up for a new one. I am heading down to start bolting on some parts next week as I have 11 days off work. The guys at Dutchboys have been hitting it hard last few days getting the shell all wet sanded, polished, and buffed so that it ready to start having parts put back on!!

I ordered a new tilt column from Jim at GMtilt.com, a new momo steering wheel and a few other parts. Also the whole brake kit from Tobin at Kore3 came in and what a great couple of guys to deal with. Got a small moutian of other parts as well fat mat, radio system, Highway 22 kit. I ended up going with the GM C6 Z06 brake kit with sliver calipers. Tobin had such a good deal on them and for what I will use the car for and my driving skills right now I figure they will be more than enough for me. I wanted baer brakes but trying to keep cost in check so I can keep this project moving. I have seen many guys run these brakes with great success also.

I spent today getting all the glass, window tracks, regulators, etc... all cleaned up and ready to go in.

So for now that is my current update and I will get a bunch of pics next week and share them with you all. Everyone keep WARM with this crazy cold weather!

Nothing fancy in the trunk just a small chunk of carpet cut and trimmed to fit the bottom portion. Overall trying to keep the car pretty stock looking with small modern touches. That is one reason I kept with the green interior, it was original. Now just trying to sort out interior to keep with original and modern mix and keep it green.

Thanks for the comments and glad you like it!!

Thanks Ron!! I never really thought the car would turn out this nice! It has taken along time and some bumps along the way but all working out. I have got a lot of good ideas, advice, and motivation on here from all the great builds and members.

My goal is to have it all assembled and driving by mid may so I can let my daughter drive me to her graduation in it! Then enjoy it all summer long. That might be lofty goals but it only takes time and :G-Dub: :G-Dub:

The roll bar and all the interior is the same green as the exterior but flat cleared. As for the engine compartment I don't know the name of the color right now but will find out for you or you can send a message/call Paul at dutchboys. I can tell you my goal with it was to not have an all black engine bay. I decided on a color to match the wheel centers pretty close but flat clear again. Then black accents as far as bolt on items. The sub frame is black though.

I really like how it has turned out so far. Thanks and glad you like it!

Frank,
The car sort of went into a holding pattern for a little bit of time during our move and getting a new house and shop built.
I did pick up a new Vapor word tank with a ZL-1 pump and have a pile of cash to order a bunch of other parts nseed to finish it off. So hopefully will have some updates soon.
I have a date in my head that the car has to be done by so gonna have to get going!!

Thanks! Your right on the time these take for the average guy! Trying to get rest of of the car finished up now.

I went with the GM crate motor LS3 480hp for now. After car is running, sorted out some and I have time behind the wheel learning how to drive it I will either swap for something else or build it up.

Thanks for the info on the engine. I have been considering that engine when I start my project. I think that it's a good baseline to learn the car with and still be able to later modify/update if the need for more power is there. I'm trying to take a page from Mark's build about weight though without the carbon fiber. It's nice but a little above my pay grade.

I like the color choice given how well the car turned out. I don't think Fathom Green ever looked that good back in the day. I hope to meet you at the Lat-G get together to get some ideas from you.

Look forward to meeting you and spending some time talking at the get together. Glad you like the paint. I am loving it this time, the first time it was painted by the rip off hack shack the paint looked OK from 15ft but I was not sure about the green. But now it's amazing, even my wife told me she can't believe how much better it looks. We went and stopped over to Dutchboys the other day and she remarked the car looks "bad ass" in her terms from the back!

Rod...if you run the same engine setup, please do me a favor. USE BETTER VALVE COVERS!! :lmao: Come on Chris, at least take the cheap route and paint those suckers like I did.

:action-smiley-027:

lol

I have been bugging him about those as well...They have to go!

Here are a few new pictures I have taken the last few weeks. We are getting back on it after a short break on the car. Starting with some wiring and plumbing. Looking forward to seeing Chris use his car next summer.

The paint on the car turned out great, I never would have thought fathom green would look that good!

We like to go the extra mile in some areas on the cars we do that some people over look. You will usually find the paint on the bottom of the rockers and quarter panels just as nice as the top of the car.

I love Fathom green, but just could not bring myself to paint my 69 vert I had that color even though it was the original color. I was afraid it would hurt resale value so I painted it black. I like that you went for it and looks great.

Chris that thing looks awsome , it takes a brave man to go with a different color and man did you pull it off. Hope your new home has a nice garage to match it.
Funny my front passenger brake SS line is almost indentical.

I got to see this car in person a few weeks ago when I visited Dutchboys. It looks amazing. I think a lot of us might have forgotten how beautiful that color is when all fresh and new. I know I did. Of course, back in the day we NEVER saw the color on such smooth and laser straight surfaces either. The car is overflowing with attention to detail and craftsmanship. It absolutely pops in the sun too.

OK smart ass! I just can't figure out which valve covers to go with, I know the ones I want but as we talked about yesterday can't quite pull that trigger yet.:bang:
But I did spend some of the day looking and found out any good valve covers are not cheap, but what is!!

So next week Curtis you can help me find some "BETTER VALVE COVERS" :warning: :lmao:
And the first beer is on me!

Call Billet Specialties --- and order almost ANYTHING that will look better than the ones you've got!! LOL

Hey everyone!

Thanks for all the compliments on the car! I want to throw out some big kudos to everyone at Dutchboys for everything they have done especially the amazing paint job! Also need to throw out credit to Billy Utley at B&B Classics for all the great fab work he did.
I wanted to be more involved with the build work wise but my job and work schedule did not allow it. So if this car was ever getting done it was by these great guys and me working overtime to fund the project, as I was not taking money from my family and our normal budget, and no loans or credit cards.
The car has exceeded what I envisioned, it's taking longer than planned due to having to keep the car fund stocked but there is light at the end of this tunnel! And it is going to amazing when done!

Next up is figuring out how to drive the car and maybe be competitive which I know will take a while. I see some driving schools in the future and lots of driving events. Power tour for sure and would love to get lucky and have the car go to SEMA somewhere.

And thanks to Paul for the updated pics, I tried to post a bunch last night but it keeps telling me pics are to big so need to figure that one out. Look forward to meeting all you at the Lat G party next week!!

Yes, the covers can be dressed up. But after looking at the pictures of the car I hardly noticed the covers. The engine bay looks really great in contrast to the exterior. Happy for you that the worst is over and you are on the home stretch. Curtis may have better valve covers but until he finalizes his exterior on his car you are out in front.

see you Wednesday.

Happy New Year to everyone!
I wanted to give a update on the progress of my car. It's been awhile since I had time to post anything. So here we go! I bought a Drive Junky front drive system, what a super nice piece! We got a ton of other little things for the car, all the material for exhust, plumbing materials, and wiring. Paul and his crew got the brake lines all wrapped up. Jason Mitchell (JMitch19) has started wiring the car and is doing a great job. Paul also has his guys wrapping up a ton of other things! Well getting late and eyes are killing me staring at this computer after my eye surgey! So here are a bunch of pics. Hope everyone likes the work.

I agree 1000%. Especially on the cheaper paint jobs because the painter doesn't wanna bend over that low to do whatever it takes to get it done on the lower 1/3 of the car. Same goes with cutting and buffing. Said painter doesn't want to bend over that long to do it right. Usually, on many cars, you'll notice that lower 1/3 of the car is a tad lighter in color due to the lack of attention.

That fathom green right?

Man i love that color..... Even more now that it looks soooo good and slick on your car!!! Seriously, WOW!!!

The rest just matches, up to snuff.

Are those straps the way the shock reservoirs are held or if your missing the billet "caps" on the motor side? Never seen em with straps and a little unsure of the straps.... I like em, just not used to them i guess (?). Oh well... :-)

Hey, about that front drive kit. It looks on driver side it would clar an "up and forward Stainless Works turbo header? I have a hard time getting good perspective for the pass side and i see that upright standing canister (?) behind the a/c compressor that migh be in the way of the header if one was to mount it with that system? If you could grab a pic of that space and clearance or just tell me what you think of the space around to clear a set of something similar to feed a turbo ('s).

Thanks!!! ...and VERY nice and clean set up.

Any "road worthy" date set?

Lead.
