We've been really moving on this 64 Chevelle to get it in and back out on the road for the first nice day of spring. A local customer had this 64 as a summer daily driver, but ended up getting a little carried away with the build. (if anyone can believe that! :_paranoid ) Another shop in our area built him a nice twin turbo LS motor, exhaust, disc brake, and suspension upgrade. Well, after making 600 + HP at the wheels, the little 235 rear tires had met their match. Ron brought the car in to us initially talking about mini-tubbing the body and narrowing the chassis. After some discussions, we decided going with a full chassis would be the way to go. We are using several of the original parts like his rear end and brakes that are basically brand new.
The plans for the rest of the car are pretty simple. The exterior, engine, wiring, and interior are pretty much staying as is. We are putting a chassis under the car, doing the exhaust, a narrowed stainless tank, fuel lines, and mini-tubbing the body to get a 335/30R20 under the back.
In addition to the tire size in the rear, Ron also really wanted to lower the car and get rid of that oh so familiar late 70's muscle car stance with the rear of the car way up in the air.
Here is the car as it arrived

The first thing I thought of was your old car.
Any chance you know what/who manifolds the previous shop used on the turbo build? Also, can we get some pics of the manifolds?

I second that on the exhaust manifolds. Would like to know what brand.

The motor, turbo's, exhaust/manifolds, etc... were done by Speed Inc. I believe they are stock F-body manifolds flipped upside down and welded. I can get some pics for you guys tomorrow.
The lifts are by Rotary Lift. We wanted a clean look in the final assembly room since it can be seen from the show room, so we went with the in ground style lift instead of the traditional post style lift. Plus the foot print is much smaller and easier to work around since the only 2 posts are under the lift.

Wheel house tacked back in. A little extra work was required on this one because there was a "Custom" repair panel pop riveted to the back of both wheel houses to cover rust holes. Had to re-make the rear body mount as well because of rust.

Looks awesome and slammed:thumbsup:
You can really tell by the rear whee/tire tucked up in there.
Is the frame hanging down lower from the body?
If so, is it because the new frame is vertically thicker than stock?

Thanks guys. The car looks pretty sick at ride height. We never took any before and after measurements on the ride height, but going from the pictures of the wheel in relation to the quarter panel, the rear looks like it came down about 6".
The frame does hang down slightly more than stock. It is less than 1/2" more than the stock frame hangs down. This is because of the frame rail design and clearance to the body. All aftermarket chassis currently available do hang down below the body the same if not more. Being bare steel also draws more attention to the frame than if it were painted matte black like a factory frame.
We are currently in the final stages of a complete re-design on our Chevelle chassis that will actually be tighter to the body than a stock frame! I will have a few projects going together on that platform in the next few weeks.

Looks awesome!
Do you have to narrow the rearend or can you just take up all that new found space with new rims with different backspacing?
Roadster Shop
03-23-2011, 09:07 AM
We could use the rear end as is, but we would end up with about an 8" - 9" back spacing on a 12" wheel. The customer wants the deep lip look, so we will be narrowing the rear end accordingly.

It has been a while since I last updated this build. we are now in the assembly stages looking to have it back on the road shortly.
Parts after paint. We went with a dark charcoal on the suspension components to give some contrast from the black frame.

Here are a few of the car going together. We are trying to get this one quickly wrapped up in time for the Power Tour. We are putting the stock interior back in for the tour, but will be back under the knife shortly.
We stole the Kinesis wheels off of Chris's 66 for mock up. The customer decided on a set of Forgeline DE3P's that should be here in a week or so.
