View Full Version : bore gauges
I started looking for bore indicator gauge for general mechanic use, ring sizing, bearing matching etc...the typical engine dimensions. I took a look on ebay and the price range is anywhere from $30 to $700 for a typical set. What is a good reliable brand to purchase? Seems the typical set will do 2"-6". I'd prefer an electric display, unless they are less reliable. What do you guys use?

I have been using a Mitutoy Series 511 for a number of years, most on small block chevy rebuilds and some early 50's six bangers. It has the 2923-10 dial indicating head. I use meters alot in my job and prefer analog dial meters in some cases, esp. bore gauges. This way I can swing the meter side to side to see I am holding it at a tilt. The dial swings each way and I can tell when I have it perfectly straight.

I agree with Jon, Mitutoyo makes a great tool and I also like the dial type for the same reason. I've also seen some in the tool catalogs that have a longer reach that would be handy for getting into things like center mains, cam journals, etc.
Thanks for the advise guys, really do appreciate it. Now to find a reputable seller
