I'm not sure if WOW covers it but man that thing is cool. Are the front fenders carbon fiber or just painted like it? If so, are the entire front fenders carbon fiber or just part?

the whole front clip is carbon fiber..there is carbon inlayed in the tops of the doors, quarters, and roll cage!

roger there is a huge thread on pt.com about the cuda...bob johnson(owner) and alan Johnson(builder)-not related have been on there talking about the car

Pics do this car no justice. IMO - It is hands down the baddest thing out there! It's going to be a long time until we something that will compare equally to this Cuda. Once again...My opinion!!

Thanks for putting togteher pics of this Marty!

That is one sweet ride !! Looks like the craftmanship is top notch.I had a chance to buy a 70 cuda last summer from a new neighbor that had just moved in and he said he did not have the time or money to restore the car.
It was kind of rough, originally a 383 car it had a 440 in it. Jim wanted $6000 for the car, i ended up buying a Vennom Nova, he ended up selling it to a guy in Conn. for $14000. After seeing these photos , makes me wish i had bought the car!! Thanks for sharing the pics.

I currently have her convinced that we are poor and she will have to drive whatever we can slide under her butt for free. I do know that I will have to pony up some thing. I think I will give her the only Ford in the family, The wife's Eddie Bauer Expedition. THEN, I can get the wife something really cool to drive(If you know what I mean). :D

Ummgawa

Yes, very secure private dorms. I really like it. It has a multitude of campus and gainesville city police. It is a private womens college and its a very good thing shes gettin' a full ride. I'd rather she was driving a tank than some ricer car or equivalent.Oh and she drives the tires off of her Jeep. Shes a terrific sitter(if yours are that young) if you and the wife ever need one. She is majoring in early childhood development and wishes to teach and coach Volleyball. Strait A student, super athelete, focused and driven. There may be a chance we are not related! I have become a lazy bastard lately when it comes to my cars lately and she puts me to shame.

that's not Alan posting the pictures. He never has time to get bored. He's under the gun constantly trying to get a project finished. He works 80 or so hours per week. What the picture shows is him milling the aluminum plate that is going to be the firewall. He also milled aluminum plate for the front and rear engine mounts. The acessories all mount to the front engine plate ie power steering, alternator, airconditioning compressor.. they all had similar designs on them...the rear motor plate flushed up to the bottom of the firewall so it looks like one piece. Alan is hotrodbuilder

I'll try to get Alan over here and follow this thread. He's got tons of pictures..We want the April issue of PHR to get out before we post much. They have about 16 pages of info on the Cuda in April's issue..it should be out in about 2 weeks. We just got in the new Centerforce dual disc clutch with an Aluminum Flywheel and pressure plate..Supertrick..we were going to run a single disc 11 inch clutch but the starter ring on the flywheel wouldn't clear the inside of the rear drive dragster can we are using..10.5' single wouldn't hold the power..We also got in the Rockland gear prepared T56 6 speed trans and the Transaxle rear that they prepared. Should hold over 1,000 h.p. Going to be interesting to see how much power and torque the motor makes with fuel injection vs what it made with the demon carb and Indy Cylinder intake. We are going to put a 3 or 4 stage nitrous set up on it too..We're getting it set up for Maxton on April 1..I think Troy and Poteet are going to have their Cuda up there too..1200+H.P. 4 cylinder turbo charged Hemi..very trick

You can't see all the equipment Alan has in his shop..he's got a ton of metal shaping equipment..ie english wheels, planishing hammers, big Yoder Hammer etc. He does everything that needs to be done to a hot rod. He doesn't like to sub anything out except the interiors to Paul Atkins who is just down the road... we really appreciate your compliments.

you ought to put the word out on this site about Maxton. Hot Rod Magazine is going to be over there to cover it. They came over last year and I took my Rambler Wagon up there. They won't let you run but 135 without a cage. They were a little surprised when the Rambler busted 135 before I reached 1/2 track..I had to pedal it the rest of the way. Ran 140 the second pass and they got a little ill..One guy in a C5 vette ran 185 on a 150 limit..They immediately escorted him out of there..It's a good time..a Firebird also ran in the mid 180's. Takes a lot of safety stuff to be OK'd to run that fast. Speeds run there also count as qualifying at Bonneville and the dry lakes..It'd be nice to see the event grow..

Hey Bob -
I'm very interested to see how your transmission holds up under that kind of torque and Nitrous hit. Manual transmissions are awesome, but have been kind of marginal in many high horsepower/traction applications. I looked into Rockland for the T56 and decided to try a TKO600 built by Promotion Performance. I hope to see these gearboxes hold up. Please keep me posted. Also, sounds like you will have a ball at Maxton.

bob johnson

don't plan to use the nitrous until 6th gear.. maybe 5th..it's staged, so not hitting it all at once..100hp per stage probably..

We're using a LM series Center Force set up..Aluminum Flywheel..Aluminum pressure plate..dual disc clutch..not a lot of rotating mass..we're not going to be putting real sticky tires on it either..hopefully it will not break anything..I was more concerned with the clutch until we went dual disc..seems like these cars are bad to tear out clutches..

rocketman
01-31-2006, 06:05 PM
i didnt know centerforce did any daul disc stuff,i had a street twin dual disc from mcleod,it was nothing but a problem and trying to talk to any there was impossible,so went with a spec.good luck.bob do own alan johnson old 32 coupe with the sb2 head motor.

bob johnson
01-31-2006, 07:00 PM
Spec is in Alabama and a good friend of ours works there. We were going to run their stuff but they don't make a flywheel. We decided on Centerforce because they were so energetic and enthusiastic about what we were doing. They haven't done any dual disc clutches for quite a while. Our direct drive dragster can scattershield was supposedly good for an eleven inch clutch and flywheel..it did, but not with a starter ring..we used this set up because we could run a driveshaft instead of a torque tube..We had to go down to 10.5" which everyone felt wasn't big enough to hold the power with a single disc..So Centerforce made the dual disc set-up for us. Did you try to get on the techline with Mcleod and talk to Red Farmer the owner? He is always very responsive to problems and available 2 times for a few hours each time daily. What problems did you have with the dual disc set-up. I would have preferred to have used the 11" set up with a single disc but it wouldn't fit. Simpler is better in most cases. We are going to put a picture of the new clutch on here. Doug Cooper from Long Island bought Alan's 32 at Barrett Jackson a few years ago. Since then he also bought my Battle Axe 69 Camaro, and the 33 blue Roadster Alan built that was hot rod of the year in 98 or so. Alan is also building him a 32 B400 sedan convt. He is also contemplating building a 69 Camaro the quality of my Cuda. Doug post on Pro-Touring under Coopercarz.

alans 32 was the coolest 32 i ever seen.

I agree on his 32..I also like the 5 window all steel 32 he built for a customer..it looked just like his car but it was a 5 window and had a big block. He's building the same guy a 32 Vicky with a 514 Ford. Bill owned both cars for years..The vicky is going to be extremely bad as*

direct port..it's plumbed under the intake..Hogan welded in the bungs when he built the intake..the regular injector nozzles are under there too..out of site where they don't distract from the look,,we've got to have that clean uncluttered look

Did you ever find out if you can use the Nitrous at the 0-200-0 event?

I thought I read that they didn't allow nitrous. But I'm not sure why. Is it a safety issue?

I'm not sure they're even going to have it this year..They didn't allow it last year..at that altitude it's absolutely not fair to run a normally aspirated car against turbos and blowers unless the normally aspirated motor can use nitrous..I'd like to find a place over here where we could run..There is an entrance road to Talledega that's several miles long and several lanes wide..not used except some people that live in condos etc at track..Maxton is a little rough to try it. I haven't seen anything about this years event..no one made 200 mph last year..185 or so was the fastest in a viper..Big Red was at a disadvantage..I don't know why they didn't allow nitrous..couldn't be safety

Got the Cuda running today at about 4PM..Alan and crew had worked until 2AM last night..and from 8 to 4PM today before the FAST engineers figured out we had been given the wrong software. Once we got the correct software it fired right off. Sounded real good..very crisp..then murphy paid us a visit..a coil took a dump..the crank and cam sensors started acting up. Got 2 of each ordered just in case. Had scheduled the dyno pull Friday at Young's Performance in Decatur, Ala., but we need to get 300 miles or so on the trans and rear before we put it thru the gruelling dyno test. Don't think we'll make it until Monday or so.

Got a call from Silver State Classic today. I had called to voice my opinion about normally aspirated cars being at a distinct disadvantage against the turbo and blower cars at the altitude they run the Big Red Challenge. My point was the blower and turbo cars could just jack their boost up and recover much of the performance they lost by being at high altitude. You would have to build a whole new motor to make the normally aspirated car get some of the power back..like a 15 or 16 to 1 motor. They discussed it with Baer and came back with a decision to let the unlimited class run nitrous. This is good news for guys like me with a marginally low compression ratio that allows us to run on pump gas. They will not run the 0-200-0 in May..They will run 0-100-0 though. They will also run a 1 mile acceleration run..no braking..run as fast as you can for 1 mile. The 0-200-0 will run in Sept.

0-100-0 does not interest me..this would be good for an 1/8 mile drag race guy except for the braking..the other May event is just a 1 mile acceleration test, no braking..I'm not particularly excited about either of these..Sept event will have the 0-200-0 Big Red Challenge..this is what we were interested in. cool guy that built some kind of butt ugly cars..a few like the Hirohota Merc were pretty, but most of that stuff was horribly ugly. He and Roth both did some hideous stuff. Hot Rodding has raised the bar a mile since that day. Their cars were not only ugly, but the quality of the work back then was terrible. Thanks a lot.. I sent you an email. Are you going to be shooting in the May and Sept events? I was disappointed that they are not going to be running the Z2Z in May. Z-100-Z is not that interesting to us.. the 1 mile acceleration test at over 7,000 ft. is not that exciting without braking involved. You do have to run like 135....then you can run 150...then you can run 175.. then you can haul as*. You have to qualify at lower speeds before you can go faster..As I understand it, you could theoretically do it all in one day..in fact in 4 passes..I ran 140 (5 miles past the legal speed limit w/o a roll bar) in my Rambler Wagon. I hit the 140 about 1/2 track and pedaled it to the eyes.. they weren't too happy with me for going over..Little AMC Motored Wagon would do 150 with ease..it'd snap your neck at 135 when you hit it. I was told I had to run 150...then 175..then try to run 200 plus if I could on April 1 with the Cuda...

Thursday..Youngs Performance..to get the Chassis Dyno to set up the Edis distributorless FAST Computer..They worked on it and found out we had one or more coils we had hid near the computer were making the computer get false readings. sure would be a lot easier to put the coil paks on the valvecover right over the corresponding cylinder..but it sure is ugly.. The timing was jumping all around..We took it back to Alan's shop and found the offending coil. Going to go back first of next week to finish the set-up. It is running much better..needs fine tuning..sounds fabulous..smooth as silk..
