I'm planning on starting my console soon. I debating on whether to build it out of metal or mdf. Either way, when I'm done it I will probably wrap it in leather. How hard is it to wrap a metal one in leather. I know with mdf, it could just be stapled or glued. How would I wrap a metal one though? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Also, any thoughts on metal vs mdf would be great also. Thanks in advance.

Both will work, Just use what your more use to. If you use MDF coat it with fiberglass resin to seal it. And a good glue will stick to metal

I, personally, would build it from metal. You can use a small wood strip on the back side to secure your vinyl wrap. I am in the process of building a console as well and I'm building it from steel. I'm modeling it after the original style 67 Camaro console, but a bit more modern looking. It should turn out nice

Check out Fesler and Gearhead Garage websites. They have both done some awesome custom consoles. Feslers are metal and more expensive. Gearhead is local to me so I have seen more of their cars with thier consoles. They also have an in-house interior guy, Shawn, who would likely answer any questions you have.

Good luck and share pics!

try option 3.....

Get some modeling foam and a electric carving knife, razor blades and a DA sander.... then carve up you a mold of how you want the console to look/flow.

Then put down some matting and brush on your resin... pull out the foam mold and then build up your little console with fiberglass. It would allow you to go a bit wilder or stay mild and do it pretty quick/ez.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I think I'm going to try and make one out of metal. I thought about doing it out of fiberglass also, but some of the ideas I have will be more 'doable' using metal. I'll post some progress pics of it once I get going. I was going to buy some fabricating tools also (brake, roll, etc) but after looking at a few and the prices, I think I may take a shot at making them first.

I agree with the statement: build with what you are most comfortable with.
We build in both styles, metal and MDF/fiberglass combo. Either one will be VERY strong when built correctly and will certainly stand the test of time. Some fear that wood or metal will weather in the elements.....DUH! Both are very durable when done right, and no car should be getting wet enough inside to pose any realistic threat. The number one concern is getting a high quality finish wrap- it is imperative that you get excellent adherence of whichever material you use. Multiple pieces and pressure fit panels or bolt together pieces will allow you more of a custom tailored look.

We have many designs and models available, including Challengers/'Cudas, Camaros, Chevelles, Mustangs, etc.

Good luck to you!
