Well figured its about time to start a thread on our 69 Camaro with AME Max g chassis weve been commisioned to build. Some of you who have been to the shop have heard the story about it and seen the car, for those who have not, it started when we got a call about a Camaro that was started at another "shop". It had been there for 5 years and progress was not happening fast enough. I was told it had an Art morrison Max G chassis an all aluminum 632 w/electronic fuel injection, 4L80E trans and needed to be finished. I had them come down with it on a trailer to check out and to figure out what was left to do. Well none of us were prepared for the mess that this "shop" had assembled. The extremely poor workmanship was evident everywhere, from the crooked misaligned quarterpanels with the flux cored mig welds to the 1/2 " gaps in rollcage fitment (the list goes on and on) Then the biggest surprise was when looking at the engine, it was wrapped in layers of plastic sitting in the car with a motorplate we first noticed the old hilborn mechanical injection manifold under the plastic and knew something wasn't right. We cut the wrapping away and found that it was a plastic mock up engine painted and disguised to look like the real thing! right down to the taped up exhaust ports to "keep the dirt out".I had to inform them that their $17,000 engine was a hunk of plastic and the trans was a gutted case as well. They had seen this engine and trans wrapped in plastic for three years and assumed it was what they paid for. I could go on forever about all the extremely poor workmanship and other useless parts such as bent coilovers and completely wrong size wheels and tires but at this point you get the idea.

notice the "all aluminum 632" and "custom firewall"

before we replaced side and upper cowls (they were completely hacked up with blowtorch)
http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/ab208/2468ebmc/1969%20Camaro%20Pro%20Touring/015.jpg

Let the rebirth begin! A ton of work is needed just to bring it back to an acceptable foundation to start upon.

These pics were taken about 6 months ago and currently were full steam ahead on this project and it will feature extensive body mods such as 3"extended rockers, flush glass, shaved drip rails custom rear spoiler, ect. (alot has already been done) but still keeping the 69 theme, a Mast black label 416 LS3 with sheetmetal intake, T56 Magnum 6 spd, Winters quick change rear, 20 x12 and 19x10 Forgelines and a ton of one offs to name a few.

I have a few more pics on my other computer showing the original "handiwork" that I'll post Monday.

Woah - I hope there suing the old shop for that motor! Good Lord... :willy:

How does that saying go? Cant squeeze blood from a turnip (or something like that!) Although I believe there are some criminal charges their working on.
The guy was basically a crook. I think he was full aware he couldn't do a job like this and saw it as an oppurtunity to make some money with no intention of actually finishing anything. Its what gives this great hobby a bad name sometimes, (although this is to the extreme!)
The owner of the car encouraged me to tell this story to remind people to do their homework and check references!

This is permanent there will be no traditional rad support as the engine compartment is getting full custom formed sheetmetal covering suspension and radiator support area. These fender attachment points will be hidden under that, they will also be mounts for the HID ballasts.

Damn nice build!

I was planning on extending the rockers on my 69 to get a lower look, too. I am running the exact same rear tire. It's great to get to see some pictures of how good it looks.

Why did you/the customer decide against going ahead with the Aluminum 632 with stack fuel injection? I am currently trying to decide between Whipple SCed LS3 or Aluminum 598ci BBC with Holley Dominator self-tuning EFI with coil per 2 cylinders. Every "pro-touring/resto-mod" build is using LS, and no-one seems to be trying new technology on the old BBC platform. I am just curious why the LS3 was chosen over the 632?

Amazing work though...

40 years of technology advancements are designed into LS engines over big blocks, although I love the 632 in our old school drag car, were going for a "European super car" type theme in this car and an LS was the logical choice.

Well have some more pictures later this week.

We ran out of time to fab our airbox before paint, so it is being carefully done now. It will come in from the bottom spoilerand into 4" tubes, merging into the throttlebody.

Thanks Ron, The packaging of the M/C reservoirs, pedal assemblies, 8" engine setback and providing a very good ergonomic seating position for the 6'3 owner of the car was very challenging!
Earlier in the thread there was a side shot, but that was before the door extensions and front spoiler extensions but it does show ride height.

We powered up the electrical system yesterday and performed initial check on everything. Our big hurdle is getting the interior done in time for Columbus, but were making progress.

Any chance you still have the quarters you replaced? I just need the area where the artificial vents are right in front of the rear wheels. I am grafting it into my quarters. If you do have them, how much for the left and right side sections. No need to ship the entire quarters if you don't mind cutting the sections out.
Thanks!!

We just scaled the car... Exactly 50/50 weight distribution at 3358 lbs. We still have some interior to go in (100-150 lbs?), but shouldnt change the distribution much. The car is running, hydraulics bled and besides windows and door poppers, the electrical finished. We will be posting some pics in the next couple of days.

One goal from the begining was to not lose the iconic 69 look but modernize it, and although there are a ton of body mods I think we achieved that goal and most importantly the customer does as well!

thats the worst...oh wait no. Staring out of a window with a view that looked same for the last 300 miles while sitting still sucks pretty bad too.

Good luck out there.

Steve,

Glad to hear you are OK. So I have Insomnia thinking, "What am I going to do for more horsepower", and "How am I going to pay for it ?"

Things for you and I to discuss when you get back..:lateral:

Not many people can say they stood on the starting line at Bonneville AND the bricks at Indy in the span of 3 days! That was pretty cool. Overall the trip out wasn't too bad.

Congrats on the final 5. I thought the car was as nice and clean looking as any 69 that I've seen. It was definitely the best 69 At the show imho
