Technically it probably comes down to the games you're most likely to play and if playing on-line with friends is likely what are your friends using.

I have an xBox and have no complaints.

My friends in the Ducati community have xBox and we've all been playing SuperBike '10 live on Wed or Fri nights. The youngests player is 44. :D

i just bought a new game system a few months ago and went with the ps3 for 2 reasons 1. i dont like the feel or layout of the xbox controller, actually the only controllers i dont hate are the playstation, original nintendo and super nintendo... 2. i got the ps3 because its a blue ray player and had reviews for being a really good one at that.
like mention above it also depends if you plan to play with your friends on-line sisnce youll have to run what they have, as far as game most oif the top title are on both systems...

I am really upgrading for the boy. We battle it out on all the motorcycle games and my old PS2 (the original black version) is about shot.

you bring up a great point AJ. I will most certainly check out the controllers before buying. Having had the PS and the PS2 and playing them both for years, it would be aggravating to get used to a new controller. (it is trivial, I know)

No online play, He is 8, so we just battle for motocross titles and sickest tricks!

In that case PS2 makes the most sense. The learning curve for changing controller layouts would be a pain.

I voted PS3. Me and my 7 yr old like to play GT5 and other games. What I don't like is many of the games are no longer two player. They are single and you play online which it great for some but I would rather play against my son.

I have both. I play my PS3 more because my friends have them, Gran Turismo 5 is on PS3, it used to be the only one with built in wifi but now the new xbox has it, it has a blu ray player and you dont have to pay to play on the internet.

I vote PS3. I don't like the xbox controller and I really like that the PS3 is also a blu-ray player. Not having to pay for online play is nice too.

Good advice so far.
Xbox360 for me. Go with what is most common for your friends AND your son's friends. He may want to get online and game with them some. I bet PS3 online won't be free forever... once they have enough folks hooked, they'll start charging.
I don't even try getting into public games, only private matches with my buddies.

Good advice here as well. I will ask him if his buddies have either.

Go with what your friends and your kids friends have more of. Both systems have their pros and cons.

Personally I own a 360. I have played with both systems pretty regularly and in my opinion the 360 was still superior for what I wanted. Big things were:

1) I already have a blu-ray player

2) I knew more people with 360s

3) the online experience is much better on the 360. the community is larger and finding and joining games is simple.

4) Xbox Live Arcade. Some of the best games I own have come from here. Shadow Complex, Pinball FX, and Castle Crashers are #1 buys in my opinion. The selection of indie titles (small developers) is awesome too.

5) Yes you have to pay for a gold membership to play online multiplayer, and yes it retails for $50. Sure it is a extra cost that people don't usually mention. I personally have never spent more than $35 to renew my 12 month membership (amazon, and target generally have them cheaper)

Also, go online and review the games catalogs of both systems. See which one has more games that are to your liking. Do not base the purchase off of one game.

I voted ps3 because if you play online people aren't as rude and the online is free.

I vote PS3, but it really depends on what games you like. GT5 is only for the PS.

I'm gonna go ahead and vote for the PS3 for a few reasons.

Granted the xbox i had was about 2-3 years old but the issues I have with it are as follows:

1) beware of the "red ring of death" or any red light on that console for that matter. if you dont know what it is, google it and read the horror stories. I'm sure they have addressed that issue with the newer models but the customer service is where they lost me as a customer.

2). I got a red light on my xbox and an error code that would come up rendering my system useless. I called customer service and they told me there was nothing I could do unless i paid them 150 dollars for their inhouse repair being that my unit was out of warranty. I asked to speak with a supervisor to which i was denied being connected to. I then sent them an email expressing my distaste for them and what had happened, to which they replied basically sorry. if you change your mind we will gladly fix it for 150 dollars. They also completely disregarded the fact that literally 1 day prior to the "melt down" i had just spent 150 dollars on the xbox Kinect (similar to wii) plus another 150 on games for the kinect (all of which are non-returnable). Unbeknownst to me, my mom bought another xbox on ebay for 65 dollars (she wanted this because the kinect was for her) which had a different red light error code and was an older unit than mine. She called them to see about warrantying it and voila, they did. So the customer service with them is sketchy at best

3) Lastly, you have to pay 60 bucks a year to play online vs free with PS3.

Sorry for the rant but there's my .00000000002 cents as Gregweld so eloquently puts it.

Good luck and have fun!

I vote for the 360!

I'm not a huge gamer...my son is more than I.
I actually bought it because it has Windows Media Center built right in, so I can use it as a Home Theater PC Extender for my bedroom.

There was a really sweet contest that the winner would race for NISSIAN PROFESSIONALLY. http://us.gran-turismo.com/us/academy/2011/

Ps I made to round 3 (top 512 out of 50,000 people ), needed top 32 and was out side bubble fighting for hundredths....

PS3 does have GT5...but if you like customizing stuff as I do get a 360 and wait for forza 4! I have both though and PS3 I think is the better console.

I own both and have only played one game on the ps3. It's my blu-ray player, that's it. I do like it but all the games I like are either only on the 360 or on both so I just play them on my 360. I do hate how you have to install the games before you can play them on the ps3. It is slower and louder than my xbox. Demos take longer to download. The live arcade games are a cool bonus on the xbox and most have a free trial option. Movies do look a whole lot better on the ps3 though. The controller is lighter and is exactly like the ps2 controller as far as layout. But if I play my xbox and then play the ps3 I don't like how small the controller is compared to the xbox. And I would say I have average sized hands. Some of the guys I played football with hate the ps3 cause the controller is too small for them. Just something else to consider.

I'm a COD Black OP's guy and GOW player so for me I dig the 360 but I have heard good tings about the PS3 I am not into Blu-Ray so that was not appealing to me.

I have both and have had them since they released,If your a gamer go with the 360.You have to pay for xbox live but it's worth it online play is so much much better than the PS network. If you are a casual gamer and want a blu ray player go with the PS3.

i disagree. The PSN is by far superior to XBL. You dont have to pay monthly for it, unless you upgrade to a premium, which is still cheaper than XBL for a subscription. i am a dedicated gamer and the 360 is waaaay more casual than the PS3. Check out Demons Souls if you have a ps3...hardcore action/rpg right there. the blu-ray and all the awesome media features are really handy. as well as streaming netflicks is tight :D

both are good consoles...but you get more bang for your buck with the PS3

I have had several games on both consoles and my exp. I always get a bit more lag on my Ps3.I disagree with the fact that xbox is way more casual.I guess it just depends on what games u end up in.Having said that I have fun on both consoles and im currently playing KZ3 on my PS3.

yeah i see your point. there are a lot of different variables like your choice of games and such that ultimately decide which console someone would buy. KZ3 is amazing though! KZ3=Winning

Since you're buying one now, I voted for PS3. I had one of the first gen or whatever they were called and I suffered the blinking red light of death and of course Sony didn't really give a ****. That seems to be typical of most anything we buy today. We sent it to someone who could fix them, and they did, and in 3 months it was dead again. We haven't had the new one long enough for me to tell you it's better but so far so good. I know Xbox had their own version of some kind of death but just the fact that it's a microsoft product is good enough reason for me to avoid it and their monopoly.
My guess would be that you'll be happy with either one but now that games are "exclusive" it's worth looking into games coming in the near future and chances are there will be an awesome game coming out that isn't on whichever console you choose.
