I bought a car in IL from an auction in Elgin. The car came with a Salvage Certificate. I'm now finding how strict IL is about registering the car - only a certified rebuilder can. Also, it needs to be inspected by SOS Police, which I can't get it inspected because I'm not a rebuilder! Have not idea what to do. Deeply appreciate for any advice.

All I can think is to locate a registered rebuilder and find out how much it would be for them to check over the car (to make sure you won't have any problems) and get them to register it for you.

I'm having a hard time finding a rebuilder. I've called over 15 auto body shops. Anyone have any referrals or ideas where to call in the NW Subs of IL? Thanks.

I hate to say this but you are probably screwed in Illinois. I however have heard of people registering them in Indiana and then transferring them to Illinois. I heard it was sort of a loophole in the law.

Good luck, I had that happen to me with a motorcycle and I wound up parting it out, it just wasn't worth my time and was way too much of a headache.

I live in the same area. I would call the IL Dept of Transportation. IDOT

The title has to be changed to say "Rebuilt" by a certified rebuilder from "Salvage"
So I'd contact some body shops and ask them what they do to get that done.

Kinda sucks that these pricks can even legally sell you a "Salvage" titled vehicle without
some kind of notification as to what's necessary to legally use the car afterwards.
It's very deceptive and happens all over the state. Body shops are always selling
salvage titled vehicles too.
