View Full Version : Need Help Starting a New Magazine
Track Junky

I have a lawyer on standby waiting for me to nail down a name for the publication. I would like to concentrate my efforts towards pro-touring events, track days, road racing, time trials, track car builds, etc. and will include events by local club owners such as NASA, SCCA, Speed Ventures, NCRC, Track Masters, etc.. I would like this to be a by the people for the people mag and cover members from forums such as PT, Lat-G, and corner Carvers.
The two options I have in mind so far are, "Modern Day Vintage Road Racer" and/or "Track Junky".
I am also looking for:
1) Graphic Designer
2) Web Designer
3) Freelance writers with photography skills
4) Coloumnists
I am hoping to have proofs completed by October of this year and would appreciate any input/ideas and/or interests in getting involved from you guys.
Thanks!!

It sounds like a really cool idea. Id read a magazine that focused on PT and all that goes along with it. Good luck with it!

Thanks Brian. I met with a production company this morning and they like the idea and are willing to invest in exchange for a 20% share.
The name we decided to go with is "Chicane" with a subtitle that we haven't nailed down yet.
The mag will concentrate solely on track days, and cars being built for track days which will include Road Racing, Time Trials, and Autocross.
I am currently looking for writers and photographers throughout the US to cover events in their general demographic region. Please PM me if you are interested.

Thanks for your support Dave. I'm putting alot of time and effort into this thing write now and its alot of work but I'm really enjoying the ride. Connecting with other racers that like to write and take pictures and making new connections is really cool.
Next step, waiting to view contract and proposal from production company. He says he will take it from design to print. He also says He is willing to invest in exchange for 20% of the business. This may cost me a bit more but he seems very qualified and experienced. Apparently he has a piece of "Comstock Magazine" and got them started among a few others. It seemed to me that it was his claim to fame. He was also a photographer for Formula One back in the day before they got re-orge'd which I thought was pretty cool.
Plan B.....met with another graphic artist today.....a very composed younger guy. Didn't have fireworks type of credentials but I felt like I could trust him. He also has a couple of magazines he has taken from design to print. I will be looking for his proposals in a couple of days.
In the mean time, I need to complete my mission statement, among all the other writers, photographers, and designers e-mails and nailing down who will work in what area and cover which track and which organization, blah, blah, blah,.......blah, blah, blah.
But yeah, so far so good.

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like the idea. It's definitely not going to happen overnight. If I'm lucky we may see the first issue the first of next year.
Once again, thanks.

I like the track junky name -- it covers ALL bases - vintage - and everything that is "track" related.
Just my .02 worth.
Good luck -- hope it works out for you!
