I have been getting a lot of questions about this car when it was seen in the background of a few other pics that I posted. I was going to wait until we were further along with the build to post, but here are some early stages of a 2nd gen that we are building for a new customer from CA. The car features one of our new Fast Track chassis and will be powered by a twin turbo LS shortly. It should be a pretty unique car.

Ride Height mock ups - The goal was to get this car sitting low with larger tires than most are runing on their 2nd gens. We really like the way a 20" x12" wheel with a 28" tire looks under the back of these cars. Front will be either an 18" or 19" x 10" with a 295 tire. We were able to get a ride height of 3.75" at the front of the rocker and 4.5" at the rear of the rocker. This thing just looks bad a$$ sitting there!

(The car had already been primed and the fenders painted when we received it. All of this will eventually be re-done.)

Here are a few shots of the completed chassis. This is part of our new Fast Track chassis line up. We are building vehicle specific chassis for 1st and 2nd gen Camaro's, 62-67 Novas, 64-71 Mustangs, challenger/'cuda, Chevelle/GTO/A Body and a few others.

SWEET!!! Thanks a lot for starting this thread. Subscribed!

What is involved in getting that chassis under the car? Does the entire floor have to come out and be rebuilt differently?

Because of the shape of the floor on the 2nd gens, this chassis does require fabricating a new main floor section in the car. The rear rails will follow the stock trunk floor so that can be used from the package tray area back, along with a stock gas tank. We are going to go with a different route for the tank so we fabbed a new center section of the trunk floor in this car.

The crossmember is designed so you can fab a dropped floor in the car which will keep the driver seat low like the original floor and give you plenty of head room.

Wheel tubs were fabbed to clear the 345 rear tire. We also fabbed complete outer wheel houses to get the tires out closer to the edge of the 1/4...more on that in a minute.

We widened the top section of the quarters to again get the wheel/tire out closer to the lip of the quarter. When we sat the car this low with such a tall tire, it ended up hitting the body unless we moved the tire inboard 2-3 inches. That made it look like a bad pro-street job, so we started to work.

This is probably one of those things that most people will never notice when it is done... but everyone would have noticed if it wasn't done.

In the end it is hard to tell that the quarters were altered at all. Here are some "down the side" shots of the car once the work was completed.

The mustang chassis is currently available. Our web site is being reworked this weekend and should show more info on that today or tomorrow. You can also check out RPM's or Goolsby's web site. Both are building mustangs with that chassis under them.

The base price on either camaro chassis, nova, Chevelle, challenger or the mustang is $15,495. That will be basically as the chassis appears in the first few posts. Brakes and 9" center section are optional. Several coil over upgrades, brake line packages, and rear suspension upgrades are available. We do a 4-bar, triangulated 4-bar, or 3-link for the rear. A HD 9" with 31 spline axles is standard, but we also offer a few options there including a full floater.

Shoot me a pm or email if you have any other questions.

It has been a while since I posted anything on this build, but we have been back on it making some progress and thought it was time to share some updates. There are more pictures on our web site if interested.

The 430 cu/in SBC showed up from Nelson Racing Engines earlier this fall and made quite a splash in the shop. It is a pretty insane piece of machinery and should look just right under the hood of this 2nd Gen.

Once we had the motor and were able to determine where it needed to go in the chassis to have room for the turbos and everything to clear, we were able to continue on the floors, firewall, etc...

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/2nd%20Gen%20Camaro/Picture220192.jpg

The fire wall is relatively simple in this car as we felt the motor should do most of the talking.

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/2nd%20Gen%20Camaro/Picture220345.jpg

Fabbed up a transmount with integrated exhaust ports. The plan is to run the exhaust directly under the driveshaft to minimaze the space it will take up in the car, and not have anything hanging below the car at the same time.

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/2nd%20Gen%20Camaro/Picture219595.jpg

We made the exhaust ports split apart to eliminate an extra set of exhaust flanges and make the exhaust easier to drop out of the car if needed.

Thanks. Knowing us, there will be an equal amount of time that goes into laying out the Dynamat so all labels are positioned properly and seams are all alligned! Then we can cover both with carpet! That is the great part about this site. We can showcase some of the things that generally wouldn't be seen when the car is completed.

So how do you guys plan to finish the interior with the cage so close to the body? Are you going to be able to use a typical panel or come up with something else? I've always wondered how to balance having a cage out of the way but still have room to get panels and roof in place.

A cage like this will not work with any factory interior panels. On a build like this we will have the upholstery shop make all of the interior panels and fit them around the cage. It is tricky to do and not the most fun, but it makes a big difference in the final product when the cage is tucked tighter to the body and not as visible.

Again, this is difficult to do. It just takes a lot of prep time and a lot of attention to how you are spraying to make sure that everything is getting covered and there are not any dry spots.

Phil, why not build a cage tight up against the body and have upholstery shop make trim panels that cover the cage completely? That ways it's out of sight.

Phil -- To weld on that did you have to remove the top or open up a porthole?

Super nice work - as usual! There is nothing but the finest coming out of your shop! :hail:

Thanks Greg. No holes cut in this one, just a really good TIG welder with a ton of experience building cages

Phil, why not build a cage tight up against the body and have upholstery shop make trim panels that cover the cage completely? That ways it's out of sight.

We have been planning that on another project that has been underway for some time already. It will give it more of a street car look, but still have the function of a full cage.

The Mustang in the background is actually a 65. We purchased the car to design our new Fast Track Mustang suspension components around. Now that all of the suspension work is completed, there aren't further plans for the car at this point.

The roll cage is just about wrapped up on the car. A few areas need final welding and it should be completed. A few people asked how we weld the bars when they are that tight to the body, so I shot a few pics as Dave was working on it today. He has become a bit of a contortionist.

Thanks everyone. The stance on this car is just pure bad ass. It is basically the same ride height as the Innovator and the C1RS, sitting right about 4" at the front of the rocker. With the low roof line this car looks much lower though.

The stance is spot on!!.But the frt. tire's need to be wider.
It has a 275 on a 10" rim now for mock up (Our standard mock up rims laying around the shop). The back spacing on the fronts is way off and they need to come out quite a bit. The rears can come out slightly. We are looking at a 305 or 315 for the front. This is the first time the car has been at ride height with wheels on it so we still have to measure out what will fit and work the best.

Sorry for the teaser shot, I really didn't notice it in the picture until it was just brought up. I've had to edit a lot of pictures because it was in the background, but missed this one apparently. That car can't be "seen" until it is completed this summer. All I can say is that it is a complete 1-off carbon fiber body and definitely not a Factory Five GTM.

Oooops sorry to bring notice to it. I thought it was a McLearen F1 at first. By all means, take the pic down and edit it so as to not get in trouble with the customer.

I'm glad you guys think you can still get a wider tire up front. That's the only "bad" thing about a second gen. The bodies are so sloped out to the edge that it's difficult to go very low and have a tire close to the outside edge. Too many times it looks like the body is hanging over the edge. Like the thing has muffin top or something.

I agree Scott, these cars need wide tires. That's why I'll be going with your front subframe whenever I get around to build a 2nd gen. A 315 front just screams mean.

I'm staying clear of the 1st Gen vs. 2nd Gen fight! Aim all slingshots, guns, knives, etc... at Greg Weld.

Thanks Gonzo, The chassis was designed so that everything would be tucked up inside of it. The frame rails and front crossmember will be the lowest point. That gives the ability to have a low ride height with out any clearance issues of things hitting under the car.

Thanks for the support from everyone else!

A little more progress on this build. unfortunately it isn't the cool, exciting stuff. This was supposed to be a solid, original car that was just primed before the owner purchased it. Well, it was solid if you consider gallons of bondo and fiberglass "solid". So, the last week has been spent on fixing poorly repaired rust.

While finishing the cage, we noticed some fiberglass in the bottom of the windshield area. That was ground out to find this.
http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/2nd%20Gen%20Camaro/Picture220388.jpg

The entire top of the cowl and dash was removed and has since been blasted.
http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/2nd%20Gen%20Camaro/Picture220414.jpg

There were a few areas in the bottom of the cowl sides that needed more attention as well.
http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/2nd%20Gen%20Camaro/Picture220428.jpg

When we started lining up the doors, we found that the driver door was packed with mud.
http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/2nd%20Gen%20Camaro/Picture220453.jpg

That door wasn't salvageable so we re-skinned it. the passenger door wasn't as bad and we were able to metal finish it out.
http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/RS-Perf/2nd%20Gen%20Camaro/Picture220549.jpg

There were a few other small spots around the car that needed attention. We would normally blast the car down to bare metal before beginning any work, but were told that the car was in perfect condition, and just primed to prevent rust. We took the guys word and never really looked into anything too closely to inspect it until now, and found a few surprises.

We were waiting for a few more sheet metal pieces to come back from the media blaster and acid dipper. Now that the fenders and hood are back, we were able to final assemble the front end.

With the low ride height the tires ended up coming really close to the hood hinges and inside portion of the fender. So, that area was removed and the hood hinges were moved back to gain the necessary room. The Ring Brothers were nice enough to send down a set of hinges for us to mock up the hood with to make sure that everything still functioned properly when relocated.

Vince is correct on the tape. It is less sticky and leaves less residue when removed after time. It is also quite a bit cheaper. No difference on thickness or durability though.

The cross member is 4.5" off the ground. The car is slammed, but has plenty of ground clearance. The front cross member is the lowest point on the car.

Well, we have this land yacht of a car in the shop called a Torino, you may have heard of it. Anyways, this barge takes up too much room in the shop and we had to push some of the smaller, more common cars outside.

On a more serios note, the car was put on hold for a while some things got sorted out. We should be back on it soon.

Great job on the fab work. Looking at the fastening of the inner fenders raises the question of ' Are they easily removable to access hidden components?' Seen many builds with fancy sheet metal inner fenders that cover up lots of mechanicals. How does this allow one to fix those parts if needed?

Not picking on this build , but the inners are fastened in a wedge form with flanges holding them and and the turbo piping locking them in on the front side. At least that how it appears. Would it be better for the inners to bolt to the flanges vs the flanges bolting to them?

Yes, factory inner fenders rarely need to be removed, but they dont cover or hide much except for the blower motor on 2nd gens.:censored:

Again, not an attack but merely a curiosity I have.

Nice observation.

But factory wells do more than hide the blower motor. They provide a secondary support for the fender and a third support for the hood when shut, not to mention keeping road grime, rocks from hitting the underside of the fender and engine.

My 2 cents, may not reflect RS...but
Most builders and designers like to convey a consistency starting with the body and in this case the 275 Ferrari inspired round feel of the body. This consistency will flow everywhere, interior, trunk and under hood.

Addressing the removable panels. When you have custom paint going on a vehicle the last this you want are panels that have to be pryed, squeezed or forced on. The easier a panel is to remove finish and install the more efficient the build will be. It also provides more hiding places for brake and other components like electronic. Not to mention it just looks cool.

Keeping a car build unique is close to impposible these days. It only takes 2 design pieces to make or break a build. Incredible as always.

I've always been extremely careful spec'ing out internal fuel tank hose, using only the hose specifically SAE rated for fuel immersion, and was under the impression that none of the retail style aeroquip/earl's etc. braided or otherwise hose was appropriate. That just looks like standard push on hose like you can buy at Summit or wherever. Can you tell us what brand/spec blue hose that is ?

Nice job laying out the fuel sump and pickups and stuff, but of course I assume RS would be top notch.

Pic time!

Fabbing the dual fuel tanks and install:
(35.5 Gal total - 24.4 Pump gas and 11.1 for the good stuff)

Staged injection? Looks very nice!

Thanks.

It is Aeroquip hose, rated for immersion. Same stuff Fuel Safe uses.

When you start lowering your consulting fees maybe we will start using you!:G-Dub:

Either way it is a few bolts and the fan comes right out.

We will throw a few more pics up tomorrow. Been doing a lot of the little detail work in the engine compartment, fabbing the exhaust, and finishing up all of the loose ends before going to body work.

Work continues on the motor plumbing, intake etc. Mock up of the revised intake for the Nelson plenum: The intake will span from ahead of the radiator core, rearward to the regular intake opening. The roughed out profile pieces you see will be machined from aluminum with a rubber bellow connection the same profile as the ends you see here.

I have a kinda dumb question but I gotta ask, what do you use when cutting cutouts like next to the headlights on the body? A air powered reciprocating saw? Cutoff wheel? You just have such clean edges and nice cuts I'm curious your method.

I know you asked RS === but I thought I might help you thinking thru a "cut out" like this.....

I'd make a template (paper) of what I thought I wanted...

I'd tape it on the area and stand back and live with it for awhile....

If I decided it's what I wanted -- and AFTER I'd thought thru all the things it would entail - such as "what's behind" -- "whats going to interfere" -- "what needs to be moved/relocated" etc....Then I'd proceed in taping securely after squaring up and making sure they were spot on for location - and being plumb etc on both sides...

Then I'd mark where I needed to use my Haugen Roto Broach - and what size I needed to make the 4 "corner radiuses"....

I would then proceed to tape a straight line to connect each of the 4 (now 4 round holes).... corners and use a cut off wheel to make that cut -- or perhaps a body saw... or maybe even make a larger "rough cut out" in the piece and then trim with a hand tin sip if I could get to the work (might need to use -- left - right - and straight snips).

Then I might clean up the edges with a good old fashioned hand file -- or a 3M disc on a couple different air tools....

In other words ----- to do work like this takes lots of planning ---- skills ---- and tools.... and there may be no two guys that would do it exactly the same way.

Looks great - how do you get inside those boxes to smooth down the louver welds ? Is the main weld done underneath so you can't see it (if so then why tack them on the top visible side ?)

Always eager to understand how the pros do it.
