I put 5" Autometer speed and tach in my 68 dash pod this past weekend. It is pretty simple, but I am not sure I am satisfied with it. The inside of the dash piece is tapered and gets gradually tighter but never comes in direct contact with anything. It is tough to get them lined up straight and I am thinking they may vibrate loose.
Any thoughts from others that have done it? I see it done a lot on here.

How about pictures of the mounting brackets from the back side?

Sorry don't have pics to share but can tell you how I did it.
I took a piece (approx. 3") of rainwater pipe with the appropriate ID and attached that to the rear of the original gauge retainer. I then put the 5" gauge in from the rear and used 4 short pointy screws 90 deg. from each other to hold the tach/speedo in place. Loosening the screws lets you line them up straight.
Good luck!

There is a picture that might help you here: http://www.scaldinghot.com/gaugepage.htm If you are using the 5 inch ones, they should fit snugly in the factory bezel (I used to have the same setup in my car). They used to come with a U shaped piece of metal that you could shorten and hold it into the bezel. I had to get a replacement gauge and they sent a round mounting bracket that would not work. You could get some 1/2 inch metal bracket and bend it and modify it to secure it in place. Send me your email and I will try to send you some better pictures (they are on my home computer).
I have seen others that mount the gauges from behind the bezel. You have to slightly modify (so that the new guage bezels will fit inside the factory figure 8 piece and then that mounts to the back side of the factory bezel) the figure 8 shaped bracket that was origianlly used.

Thanks guys, those are both helpful to think about. I have the old style Autometer with bent aluminum bracket that I cut shorter. Gauge is installed from the front and they do fit reasonably well. I did not think of using the original bezel and will see if that helps with alignment and installing from the rear.
I also like your turn signal indicators. I was thinking along the same lines, but did not think about that location.

We are cutting some mounting brackets for our 5" 3-1 gauges. Should have them next week some time, will post pics when we have them ready. Should work for the Autometers as well.
