Marty- I have no 2nd gens going on in metal work right now.. but If you take a pic of the firewall & sketch your layout of what you are thinking.. I will see what I can do to squeeze it into our schedule.. When you lay it out with pencil.. scan it & e-mail it.. I just re-did my firewall plate with a different design & will have a mounting location for my Y fuel block..

Chris,

You and I are no longer Friends. I am going to De-Freind you from Facebook (that is if I can figure out how). It's not fair, You are building my dream car and even in the freaking colors I want it to be. That's just not right.

Please Post a link on this thread so I can watch this build and cry myself to sleep everynight due to Car Envy.

and yes I now have a new desktop background

The image that I have attached should be a constant reminder of the car you should be building now not when you are 70 yrs old.. It will also add more tears to your eyes every night..

Here is your new desk top back ground!

This Saturday I held a Labor Day weekend Auto-X.. I had not other car to drive but this little Mustang... Matt A is right ! Always have a Mustang on stand-by when your Camaro is down.. I had a blast with this car.. The new motor puts out plenty of power & the new suspension parts are working.. The only thing that was holding us back was tires... This week we will get new tires on the car & head out to the So-Cal Challenge... Lately we have been playing around with late model Camaros & Mustangs.. Must say that we are having fun with those cars...

How will you attach the metal to the bumper cover?

Yeah, what he asked !

Also, did you simply extend the existing flare or did you butt weld a new flare assembly in there ? I don't see where any paint was sanded off to attach the flare using a rolled edge as is often done. If so, good job getting in there and grinding down the weld bead on the inside corner.

Cris@JCG

Their is a metal to plastic adhesive what will be using.. then fiberglass it.. If that does not work bubble gum!

We built a flare from scatch, cut out the factory opening, & welded the new pcs... Has been great welding on new factory sheetmetal.. Like paper! :D

I still can't fathom how you integrated those steel spats into the urethane bumper cover and got it to look so seamless. I mean that's not a close up high fidelity picture but I can't tell there was any work there at all.
If you glued them on how did you cover the ridge of the metal piece ? Surely bondo doesn't work on the bumper cover, what did you use ?. Did you sink them into the bumper cover and then epoxy and cover them ?

I'm not trying to do anything like this, I'm just curious how that was done.

I was looking for pics for this process but forgot to take some... We used 3M panel adhesive & pop rivits to hold both pcs together.. Sanded the both pcs together to blend them & finish it off with body filler... I was lucky that my body man had done this in the past with other cars..

It has been crazy here @ the shop trying to get the Mustang ready for Optima... We hurt the engine @ RTTC.. SO plan B was put into effect.. The new engine is making 605 hp with 540 tq @ the crank naturally aspirated.. also upgraded from a five speed to a 6 speed.. Plus alot more.. But the icing on the cake is the car on it's new Forgelines!

Got to tune the car, Put back on the PJ decals.. & hope we are ready!

Ok.. I can only keep this under wraps for so long... but I might as well let the cat out of the bag... Mast Motorsport 416 LS3 with a RPM Transmission Stage 5 Road race T56... Tonight we put in the 4.10 gears!

We did this LS conversion in 2 weeks... My crew was busting ass to get it done! We just felt that we would not have gotten the Ford motor rebuilt in time..

Here are some pics of the set up stage... It is a good thing I have set up motors with T56 transmissions...

Special thanks to Chris Durate @ Mast Motorsports for getting me a engine & Jeremy @ RPM Transmission for getting key parts out ASAP..

Carl @ Vaporworks was a key player to the conversion.. He got the Ford fuel system to work for us! & Ken Whitney my wiring guy!

Thanks for the props guys! It was a pretty simple swap for us.. Fabricate engine & trans mounts... The union of the clutch master cylinder & power steering was easy.. We have plenty of custom fitting to make unions..

The shifter was a challenge & so was running lines to my oil cooler.. but we only designed & machined one piece... Mast makes a great oil pan... I have about three in stock... but they did not give enough room for fittings to headers.. When you work with -10 or -12 fittings .. you run out of room... So we designed this remote oil filter adapter.. It takes it to a Earl's remote oil filter adapter with thermostat.. then to the cooler.. & then returns oil back to the engine..

Just out of curiosity (and I know this is way off topic but bare with me), how much bondo do you usually end up using when you smooth a firewall? How thick of a pass of bondo is acceptable for something like that? I lined mine all up and spent A LOT of time making sure it was straight and I have made sure to tack around the edges rather slowly to avoid warpage. Well, it warped, I don't know how I ended up doing that. :willy:

How do you avoid warping such a large flat area?

Here is another 68 Camaro we are working on here at the shop.. It has been a drag car all its life & now are working on putting back on the street.. When the car was stripped down to bare metal we found that it had lots of rust covered with bondo & card board was used as a backing to hold it in place.. Point of no return.. Owner said fix it & while you are @ it give it some custom touches.. Replacement floors were required with trunk & firewall..
Upgrade list: Scott Mock Sub-frame with C6 suspension, Rear suspension ??, LS2 with T56, Z06 Corvette wheels, & a few JCG custom pcs...

That is one I don't see the need for. I was impressed with the first Hemi conversion I did back in 05, 5.7 truck motor went 12.4@113 with just a cam and a set of headers. I'm right in the middle of a Gen.3 Hemi conversion in an old truck, its an easy conversion, and I really beleive there is as much if not more potential for big power in these motors, as in the LS stuff. Hell the new 6.4's are 525 HP and you can pick them up new for $6900.

I am so over all the crying over the wrong engine in the wrong car.

Sort of with Ron on the Challenger and even though I'm a Mopar guy I'm not a purist by any means...horsepower is horsepower. The new Hemi's do make some serious power, have cross bolted mains, etc. PHR Mag just had their engine shoot out and a 417 CI 3G Hemi won the street division with 675 HP and 604 TQ on 10.5 CR. Not too bad! Not saying an LS isn't a cheaper, easier engine to build but I'm not sure if I see the point either. Plus on the Mopar side the value of that car just sank no matter if the LS is a better fit or not. If a race car yep---street car nope.

But that said, very interested in the project as I'm building a Challenger. Can you let me in on what you have planned for the front suspension?

Thanks-Wes

I'm with you guys on this too. I'm going to enjoy watching this build come about regardless of what engine is in the car. However, for whatever reason, my initial response was "I certainly wouldn't do it that way". The weird thing is that I don't have that response at all with a Ford, ever. No idea why as there are some killer Ford builds going around that I like seeing as well. Maybe it's the fact that Mopars just aren't that prevalent in the PT world. I dunno. This car's going to be badass no matter what. That I am certain of. Good luck Cris:thumbsup:

I forgot you were a Mopar guy! I always wanted to do a Hemi Conversion but in this Challenger we will be doing what owner wants Pro-Tour Trans Am theme TA.. He just happens to like LS engines.. & has one that has the perfect HP & TQ for the events we attend thru out the year.. Looking forward to doing the vintage flares..

But if ever wanted to go Mopar power that would be an easy conversion.. When we are doing the build.. I will make sure that I leave that option open..

This is our theme..

Cris,
Can you do us Mopar guys a big favor and build your front clip specifically for the Challenger so we have a great set up for our builds and not just modify a Camaro/GM clip to fit? It seems that would be a win win in my opinion. You'd have a product to sell to us PT non purist Mopar guys! I saw what DSE Is doing on their Charger build but they sort of went the short route since originally they were going to use their universal X595 crossmember but instead used a GM front.

I will let you know if I move forward..

BTW- the Charger will get a Gen 3 426 Hemi.. :D

Been watching you work and have to say that it has been top notch.

If and when you get to build that Mopar upgrade suspension, please stay away from GM based parts. Use Viper arms or make your own, but please dont mix "C-category". I'm sure you will come up something mind blowing...

The Challenger with LS, there is nightmare for me.. I know: what customer wants...

Cris, is this engine shipping yet? I've been tempted to pull the trigger on one myself, but wasn't sure they were available yet. Also, is that thing going to fit under the hood of the Cobra, or are you guys going to have to get, "creative?"

We got a Cobra coming next week... Pulling out the SOHC with Hilborn injection... Doing a conversion!! :D :D

Is this one of a pair of specially built Cobras that were featured in Hot Rod or some other big magazine about a year ago? They were custom ordered, and the other one was bronze or some other such material?

The other one has a copper body.. Both are prettymuch 100% one-off CNC aluminum bits underneath.. can't even imagine how much they would've cost to commission...

Not a total waste Blake.. The owner has 2 other Kirkham Cobras.. He just wants one with a modern Coyote in it.. We were close to putting a LS3 in it but Roush got us a engine...

Man why do that? That SOHC is my all time favorite powerplant. It doesn't sound like he lacks funding so why not just build another car? It wouldn't be much more work. You could hang 10 turbos on that coyote, but itll never equal the legend. It's a flop top too!

For the most part, I agree, the cammer is flat bitchin in that car. But if this guy has two more Kirkham cars and he wants to go beat on this one, I don't blame him for swapping in the coyote.

I'll likely never find out, but I bet that blowing up a 50 thousand dollar bullet would suck......take out coyotes are $4,500.

SO the last two weeks before the Laguna Seca event a descision was made to convert Jake's 69 to an LS engine.. A LS7 conversion! We slammed this conversion in 2 weeks! and made the event.. We got another C5 Z06 Corvette in the stable! We will be moving here in the near future setting up Corvettes for race duties with Danny Popp.. This one has left the shop & currently in OH with Danny getting the last details of it dialed in.. Danny ran a 1.15 @ Putman Park this past weekend @ a 10/10th event.. So we have finally given Jake/Roy Rozelle 69 Camaro a nickname! "SCRAPPY" Yesterday we went to an event that Speed Ventures was having @ California Speedway on the Roval.. We were getting some practice & dialing in the car before the USCA event that will be held in June @ Fontana.. We found some simple setting that help us go from Auto-x to road coarse.. Jake is one hell of a driver & with time he will only get better.. He was fearless on the Roval.. We hit 151 mph! but had an incident with some oil leak that caused us to get the car off the track ASAP & put out the FIRE! This to date has been the most intense test session we have had..

The cam info. is something that I do not share.. It is the same cam I use on Blu Balz.. I know that sum will think what is the big secret but it cost us some R&D to find the right combo that works for us in the LS7 for what we are doing.. The motor is just a basic LS7 crate motor with cam & works great.. But the motor will come out to change out to ARP fasteners, diamond hone, change pistons, & most important valves.. Stock LS7's are known for dropping valves..

Can you share more info og the cam? Was there anything else than just a cam?

Roger that. How about selling same cam?

I have same setup in my car and would be intrested of just cam and tune. Many cams ( like torquer ) require head work what i dont plan to do in near future.

As for dropping valves.. Is that really a risk? If so i really believe GM would done something to fix it.

Cris@JCG
05-06-2014, 08:06 AM
PM me & will discuss the cam details..

Our cam is a torquer speced cam & we stick with stock heads.. Their is alot of opinions on engine/cam combos work the best.. We have found that 600 hp is where we like to be for our cars & it does not take much to get their..

let me clarify the GM dropping valves.. We ring our motors pretty steady to 7000 rpm.. & when you are racing the LS7 it is better to upgrade the exhaust valves on a side of procaution plus the tune will be key when you are running them hard.. I have two core LS7 that I have bought from GM pull outs with a cracked cylinder & broken piston.. Motors leaned out somewhere.. The third one was with upgraded valves & broke a valve on the exhaust..

The LS7 motor is my favorite of them all but expensive.. It is hard to buy one from GM & then throw more $$$ @ it so that you can prolong the life of it on the track.. Currently we looking @ different method of how we will get our LS7 track motors built..

I have customer that has requested something different from us.. A chrome moly Camaro sub-frame.. The goal is weight reduction which we have accomplished not only by using the thinner lighter material but by optimizing the design with less components.. This chassis has the same suspension geometry as the Challenger which we have proofed the prototype with many road course & Auto-x events.. Plus the Challenger has over 3000 street miles on it.. The install will happen soon & will share it then..
